Good investment as solid AMD office workhorse: Acer TravelMate P4 TMP414-42 laptop review
Travel mate with Ryzen power.
Update | Acer is not well known for its business laptops, but why? Acer's TravelMate P4 TMP414-42 shows that Acer does know how to make good laptops for the productive use. In our review, it does good thanks to the AMD Ryzen 5 and a bright, matte screen as well as nice input devices.Benjamin Herzig 👁 (translated by Benjamin Herzig) Published 🇩🇪 🇫🇷 ...
Verdict: Good Acer laptop for an attractive price
The basics for an office and business laptop: A bright, matte screen, a comfortable keyboard and good touchpad, as well as many ports and security functions. The Acer TravelMate P4 TMP414-42 delivers on all of these points - and on some of them, it even overdelivers. The port selection is strong, with RJ45 Ethernet and a microSD slot, which is better than the competition.
We also can not complain in other manners: The AMD Ryzen 5 may not be quite the newest CPU, but the Zen4 cores are still fast enough for a good performance and efficiency. The TravelMate does not get very loud, nor does it heat up much. The battery life is usable as well. Where Acer falters: The TravelMate laptop has audible coil whine. Also, the WWAN option is missing, and the keyboard is not user-changeable.
Update, 20th May 2025: Additional battery test added.
Pros
Cons
Pricing and availability
The Acer TravelMate P4 TMP414-42 is listed on the US Acer website, but not yet available - Acer still sells the similar predecessor Acer TravelMate P4 TMP414-41, which contains the AMD Ryzen 6650U. This one starts at roughly $950.

- Possible competitors in comparison
Acer is not an unknown in the market for business laptops, but definitely not one of the big players. With its Acer TravelMate laptops, Acer is in the role of the underdog against the HP EliteBooks, Lenovo ThinkPads and Dell Pro laptops. The Acer TravelMate P4 is a model in the mid-range segment, similar to a Lenovo ThinkPad T14 or L14, Dell Pro 14 or the HP EliteBook 600.
The variant we test here of the Acer TravelMate P4 TMP414-42-TCO-R6KG contains an AMD Ryzen 5 chip of the Hawk Point generation - not AMD's newest, but still fast enough for all everyday office tasks. AMD also shares this opinion, which is why they still sell the Hawk Point chips, now under the name Ryzen 200.
Specifications: Ryzen 5 and WUXGA display
Case: Blue-grey plastic everywhere
Acer relies on a plastic chassis. The smooth plastic is a dark blue-grey and it seems robust. Overall, the design of the Acer TravelMate looks a bit outdated, especially because of the wide screen bezels. The chassis is boxy, with some strong chamfering on the bottom cover, making the Acer laptop look thinner than it truly is.
At least the base unit of the Acer TravelMate P4 is pretty robust. In the center, there is barely any flex and only under strong pressure. Sadly, the display cover is less strong: It is easy to bend the panel, with the pressure going pretty directly to the screen panel. Interesting to us is the material of the screen bezel: Acer forgoes the dedicated rubber lip, instead simply rubberizing the whole bezel.
The massive hinges of the Acer laptop do not look very elegant, but they hold the screen cover well in place. There is barely any wobble, if at all, and the maximum opening angle is 180 degrees. One-handed opening is not possible.
The Acer TravelMate P4 is bigger and thicker than most of the competition. With 1.5 kg or 3.23 lbs, it is not a featherweight.
Connectivity: Acer laptop with RJ45 Ethernet and microSD as well as USB4
We do not have any complaints about the port selection, as the Acer TravelMate P4 even sports RJ45 and a microSD card reader. A critique: One of the charging ports could have been placed on the right side, so that users can choose from which side they want to charge the laptop.
SD Card Reader
The microSD card slot of the Acer laptop TravelMate P4 is mostly there to make carrying an external card reader unnecessary - for professional use, it is much too slow, which our measurements with the AV Pro microSD 128 GB V60 reference card show. With 25 to 36 MB/s, transferring a huge amount of data would take too long.

Communication
Acer's TravelMate P4 contains a MediaTek Wi-Fi module that supports the Wi-Fi 6E standard. It achieves high transfer rates when sending data.
There is a second communication module, a Realtek Ethernet NIC, which offers Gigabit speed.
Webcam
Acer puts in a simple 1080p webcam that is good enough to create a usable picture for video calls - but not more than that. The image is rather pixelated, and the colors are not accurate.

Security
As a laptop for the business sector, the Acer TravelMate P4 has a few security functions. Among them: a Kensington lock slot, a fingerprint sensor in the power button and a TPM chip. However, an Infrared camera, nowadays standard issue with many business laptops, is missing. The same applies to the Smartcard reader.
Accessories
Apart from the 65 W charger, there are no accessories for the Acer TravelMate P4.
Maintenance
Ten Torx screws hold the bottom cover of the Acer TravelMate P4. The screws are not fixed in the chassis, so be careful not to lose them. There are also some clips that have to be opened before the bottom cover can be removed.
Once this is done, the Acer laptop offers a host of upgradability options. The RAM is socketed with two DDR5 SO-DIMM slots. SSD (M.2 2280) and Wi-Fi card (M.2 2230) are also modular. Not at all an option is WWAN, as neither antennas nor an M.2 slot or a SIM slot are there. Aside of the mentioned upgradeable components, it is also possible to maintain the cooling system and battery. Much more complicated is repairing the keyboard, which is part of the palmrest assembly - a problem with many new laptops nowadays.
Sustainability
According to Acer, the TravelMate P4 TMP414-42 uses "post consumer/recycled" materials, but how much and where is unclear. At least, Acer tells customers the CO₂ emissions that are set-free into the atmosphere when the TravelMate P4 is produced (280 kg/CO₂ equivalent).
Warranty
The Acer TravelMate P4 TMP414-42 has a 36-month warranty with pick-up service. The warranty only applies in Germany as the country of origin - outside, Acer gives the TravelMate a basic 12-month bring-in warranty. The battery only has a 12-month warranty in any case.
Input devices: Typing feel nice, layout not
Keyboard
The keyboard of the Acer TravelMate P4 convinces us, mainly with the good typing feel. The chiclet keys offer a long key travel of roughly 1.5 mm, with a well-defined key feedback. Typing longer texts on this keyboard is easy and a nice experience.
Less nice is the keyboard layout. The Acer laptop lacks dedicated navigation keys. Also, the "Acer" key, which is used to conjure the TravelMateSense app, is placed badly. Especially when using the Delete key, its position can lead to typing errors.
Touchpad
Measuring 12.6 x 7.8 cm, Acer uses a plastic touchpad in its TravelMate laptop. It is made of a smooth material that offers a good gliding ability to the fingers. Acer puts in a mechanical clickpad, which can be clicked in the lower part of the surface. The click feels nice, as it is dampened and not very loud, but still precise. The touchpad is overall a nice one, though haptic glass touchpads are overall better.
Display: Matte screen surface paired with high brightness
For customers, Acer makes it easy with the TravelMate P4 TMP414-42: There is only a single screen options. All models contain a 14-inch screen based on IPS technology with a matte screen surface. Acer says the screen brightness should reach 400 cd/m², the screen is also supposed to cover 100 percent of the sRGB color gamut.
Very nice: The screen is brighter than 400 cd/m², with an average brightness of 426 cd/m². Of the tested business laptops, the Acer TravelMate P4 does not have the highest screen brightness, but it is competitive. A disadvantage of the panel, which has been made by AUO: It is rather slow, with a refresh rate of just 60 Hz and long reaction times.

* ... smaller is better
Ex factory, the colors of the Acer TravelMate P4 TMP414-42 are set too cold, which we measured with the app Calman and the X-Rite i1Pro 3. A calibration with the X-Rite i1Profiler fixes this. The color accuracy with the profile we created, available to download for free as always in the gray box above, sits at 1.9 deltaE Colorchecker, which is an average value of all the deviations from neutral colors.
For simple photo editing, the screen is certainly usable, as the small sRGB color gamut is covered by roughly 100 percent.

Performance: Ryzen 5 with solid performance
There are three different CPU configurations of the Acer TravelMate P4 TMP414-42, with three AMD CPUs available: AMD Ryzen 3 8440U, the AMD Ryzen 5 8540U and the AMD Ryzen 7 8840U. As the GPU is always an AMD Radeon present: AMD Radeon 740M or the 780M, depending on the CPU. There are two options for the RAM as well: 16 or 32 GB DDR5-5600 memory, in two SO-DIMM sockets - allowing for a maximum of 64 GB, the Acer laptop is upgradeable. As mass storage, there is a single M.2 2280 SSD.
Testing conditions
The Acer TravelMate P4 has three different performance modes (Quiet, Normal, Performance), which can be set via the TravelMateSense app, but they do not have any impact on the performance. The only difference between them: With the modes "Normal" and "Performance", the fan ramps up faster and louder. The power limits are identical: 30 W as the maximum, with 25 W for prolonged load. For our performance benchmarks, we used the mode "Performance".
Processor
The AMD Ryzen 5 8540U is a mid-range CPU of the "Hawk Point" series by AMD. With a total of six Zen4 cores (12 threads), it is not a new chip, as it originally launched in 2023. The cores have clock rates ranging from 3.2 to 4.9 GHz, with the typical TDP of 15 W. For additional benchmark comparisons, our CPU list can be used.
This CPU is able to hold its performance stable, although not on a very high level. The multicore performance under load is roughly equivalent to a recent Intel Lunar Lake chip - good, but not great. At least the old Intel Raptor Lake variant of the Acer TravelMate can be easily beaten.
When running on battery power, the CPU is clearly throttled down. We measured a performance decrease of 26 percent. Instead of 9662 points, the Acer TravelMate P4 only achieved 7694 points in the Cinebench R23 multicore test.

Storage Devices
SSDs are rarely a problem nowadays, as even slow drives are plenty fast in everyday use. This is the case for the Acer TravelMate P4 as well: The 512 GB NVMe PCIe 4.0 SSD by SK Hynix is not the fastest in our ranking, but we do not notice this in everyday use.

Energy management: Acer achieves 10 hours of battery life with the TravelMate
Power consumption
Unfortunately, the Acer laptop is not really efficient, at least in the idle state. Under load, it is better, but that is to be expected. After all, the Acer TravelMate P4 is limited to 30 W.
For the maximum power consumption of 48 W, the 65 W charger of the Acer TravelMate P4 is almost oversized - a compact 45 W charger might be enough for most users.

Battery life
With round about ten hours of battery life in the Wi-Fi test (150 cd/m²), Acer extracts a good battery life out of the 53 Wh battery. The other business laptops are only slightly better, except for the Asus ExpertBook P5 with Intel Lunar Lake.
Update, 20th May 2025: The battery life is also good whenn the screen is set to the maximum screen brightness during the Wi-Fi test. Acer's TravelMate P4 lasted for around eight and a half hour here.

Notebookcheck Overall Rating
With the Acer TravelMate P4 TMP414-42, Acer produces a solid business laptop with nice connectivity options, input devices and a screen for an attractive price. Our biggest point of critique is the coil whine we detected.
