Second best. The P449-M-7407 is the latest 14" notebook from Acer's TravelMate series. The device is aimed at business professionals looking for a portable and affordable notebook in the highly competitive business market. While it has its shortcomings, the P449 is a well-rounded device. Can this Jack of all trades best the competition, or is it merely the court fool?

Whether Acer is going to close the gap to Lenovo and Dell in the business laptop world is yet hard to predict. However, the TravelMate P4 (TMP414-51) is a step in the right direction… kind of. Honestly, the best thing about this laptop is not about the power it provides, but the usability it offers. Having a spill-resistant keyboard that is comfortable for typing is essential in our opinion, especially when you spend most of your day with this device. After all, accidents happen.

The TravelMate P4 scores points with long battery life, relatively low emissions, and a Thunderbolt 4 port. Windows 10 Pro serves as the operating system. Another advantage: Acer offers a three-year warranty for the laptop.

The Acer Travelmate P4 is an alternative to the Travelmate P2 that we recently reviewed, but it’s even cheaper. The highlights, according to Acer, are a 14-hour battery life, an aluminium-magnesium alloy body. Using those materials in combination with a mostly plastic skin keeps the weight down, something anyone who carries their system through a working day will appreciate. What’s genuinely impressive is how fast these systems can be when compared with much more expensive ultrabook designs, as they use similar platforms and include some special features, like Thunderbolt ports. While this has a relatively easy fix, it isn’t one that the Acer support team appears able to provide. Even with this mistake, the Travelmate P4 is one of the better cheap business laptops that we have tested and easily worth the modest asking price Acer wants for it.

This is a powerful Notebook from Acer that is very fast and while not a featherweight at 1.41 kilos it is very solid so should stand the odd knock or three. It still has the ability to be used in an office environment as it has Ethernet and a full sized HDMI port. So what else does this latest offering have to temp the user to dig into their wallet.

Its murky screen would normally limit the Acer TravelMate P4 to a two- or two-and-a-half-star rating, though we decided to give it three stars for its bargain price, satisfying ports, and decent performance. Plugged into a monitor via the HDMI port or a DisplayPort adapter in a USB4 port, it's a capable desktop alternative. It's also lighter for travel than many 16-inch rivals, though a candle in a garret would be better than its screen on an airliner with only an overhead lamp for illumination. This review isn't an unequivocal thumbs-down, but to be forewarned is to be forearmed.

Inconspicuous emissions, visual understatement, quiet keys, a large ClickPad, and hardware that can be upgraded: Acer's 14-inch laptop can compete with Windows notebooks at the level of the HP ProBook, Lenovo ThinkPad, and Dell Latitude. But in contrast to those, it avoids standing out at all costs.

The Acer TravelMate P4 (TMP414-53) is a well-priced yet sturdy machine. It provides enough performance for daily or office tasks. This is due to the high clocks of the CPU. The machine that we bought is equipped with Core i5-1335U which P and E cores maintain 3.84 GHz / 2.83 GHz frequency in short loads and 2.97 GHz / 2.08 GHz in long stress like video conversion. That’s why the power is always there when you need it. The 1200p 60Hz display (NV140WUM-N41 (BOE0AE8)) isn’t high-end but it’ll do the job for normal usage since it lacks PWM and you shouldn’t experience eye strain or headaches if you take regular breaks during work. On the other hand, the maximum brightness and the color coverage are low.

A large screen makes it easier to work with extensive Excel spreadsheets and PowerPoint presentations. Multi-tasking is also easier if you can keep an eye on numerous program windows at the same time. However, the display diagonal should not be at the expense of mobility – even if you only want to take the notebook to a meeting and don’t want to use it mainly when travelling. The Acer Travelmate P4 with a 16-inch display promises to optimally combine these advantages. Its housing made of an aluminum-magnesium compound in the grey-blue color Slate Blue presents itself in the inconspicuous standard look of many mid-range business notebooks.

The Acer TravelMate P4 (TMP413-51) is a small but capable device. This is possible thanks to the cooling solution. It looks modest but it just gets the job done even in long periods of 100% CPU load. In this case, the processor can maintain 2.16 GHz for the P cores and 1.67 GHz for the E cores. This is a respectable result for a 13-incher. Also, the chip temperature is under control and the fan is almost quiet. The keyboard is comfortable for long hours of non-stop typing because it has a long key travel and clicky feedback. The optional backlight can be handy for those who prefer to work in a dimmed environment or during the nighttime. The touchpad has a smooth surface that allows precise tracking. The 16:10 IPS display (BOE NV133WUM-N44 (BOE0C28)) is good enough for home or office usage.

The Acer TravelMate Spin P4 is a decent pick for professionals and prosumers looking to buy a 14-inch Windows 2-in-1. Though not great for tablet use, it’s still an enjoyable laptop with a good keyboard, plenty of physical connectivity, a bundled active stylus, and acceptable battery life. It’s not very quick for the price and the display could be better. However, these flaws also tend to be found in price-competitive business laptops. The Spin P4 isn’t a laptop that will get anyone excited, but it gets the job done at a modest price.

Update | Acer is not well known for its business laptops, but why? Acer's TravelMate P4 TMP414-42 shows that Acer does know how to make good laptops for the productive use. In our review, it does good thanks to the AMD Ryzen 5 and a bright, matte screen as well as nice input devices.

Acer: In 1976, the company was founded in Taiwan under the name Multitech and was renamed Acer or Acer Group in 1987. The product range includes, for example, laptops, tablets, smartphones, desktops, monitors, TVs and computer peripherals. Since 2007, the group has merged with Gateway Inc. and Packard Bell, which also market their own laptop product lines.
Acer computers are designed for a variety of purposes, including ultrabooks for mobile use, gaming laptops for gamers, affordable options for everyday tasks, and 2-in-1 convertible laptops for versatility. Acer's product portfolio also includes tablets that offer portable computing and multimedia capabilities.
Modern games should be playable with these graphics cards at low settings and resolutions. Casual gamers may be happy with these cards.

Intel Core i7: The Intel Core i7 for laptops is based on the LG1156 Core i5/i7 CPU for desktops. The base clock speed of the CPUs is relatively low, but because of a huge Turbo mode, the cores can dynamically overclock to up to 3.2 GHz (920XM). Therefore, the CPU can be as fast as high clocked dual-core CPUs (using single threaded applications) but still offer the advantage of 4 cores. Because of the large TDP of 45 W / 55 W, the CPU is only intended for large laptops.

14.00:
14 inch display size represents a middle ground between the small subnotebook formats and the screens of the standard 15 inch laptops.
The reason for the popularity of mid-sized displays is that this size is reasonably easy on the eyes, provides good resolutions with usable detail sizes, yet does not consume too much power and the devices can still be reasonably compact.
In the past, 14-inch devices were very rare, but now they are the standard for laptops after the 15-inchers.
16.00:
This range for display formats was and is a rarity. It is larger than the general standard of 15 inches, but not yet in the range of large workstations. One usually has higher screen resolutions available, but portability suffers from that.
