AMD much faster than Intel: Lenovo ThinkPad T14 Gen 5 laptop review
ThinkPad Hawk.
AMD or Intel - Lenovo gives customers who buy the ThinkPad T14 Gen 5 the choice. The business laptop offers many great connectivity and security options, as well as plenty upgradeability, coupled with a good performance. This performance has a price, however.Benjamin Herzig 👁 (translated by Benjamin Herzig) Published 🇩🇪 🇸🇪 ...
Verdict: ThinkPad T14 Gen 5 AMD faster, but also hotter
As far as performance is concerned, the Lenovo ThinkPad T14 Gen 5 AMD is clearly better than the ThinkPad T14 Gen 5 Intel. The "Hawk Point" platform offers more power than Meteor Lake U in all regards. At the same time, this year's AMD model does not compromise on upgradeability, unlike the previous entries. Lenovo finally puts two SO-DIMM slots into the T14 G5 AMD, making memory completely upgradeable. Other advantages like the great input devices, LTE and the good port selection including RJ45-Ethernet are present in both variants of the ThinkPad T14 Gen 5.
Unfortunately, Lenovo somewhat overdoes it with getting the most performance out of the laptop, as the ThinkPad T14 Gen 5 AMD runs pretty hot and comparably loud under maximum load. Battery life is only average and we did detect coil whine. None of these things make the Lenovo ThinkPad T14 Gen 5 AMD a bad laptop, but they are arguments to maybe keep waiting a little longer for a ThinkPad T14 Gen 6 and Zen 5 / Strix Point.

Lenovo's ThinkPad series offers many options, including different CPUs. Apart from Intel, the laptop for the enterprise sector can also be had with AMD chips since 2017. The most important pillar of the lineup, the Lenovo ThinkPad T14 aka, the bread and butter model, is available with both flavors. This is one of the most sold models, which serves as a workhorse for many everyday tasks in the office.
In its fifth iteration, the ThinkPad T14 Gen 5 offers either Meteor Lake or AMD Ryzen 8000U. We tested the Intel model already in the fall, now the Ryzen variant follows.
Specifications: Ryzen 7 meets 32 GB RAM
Case: ThinkPad T14 Gen 5 AMD identical to the T14 Gen 5 Intel
Since ThinkPad T14 Gen 5 Intel and T14 Gen 5 AMD use the same chassis, so we will try to keep it short and sweet when it comes to describing the design and connectivity options.
The Lenovo ThinkPad T14 Gen 5 has a refreshed design in comparison with the preceding ThinkPad T14 Gen 4, with black logos and hinges as well as the characteristic webcam bump, which allows for a slightly smaller screen bezel. The black, boxy chassis keeps to the ThinkPad tradition looks wise and also in terms of the construction, which is mainly based on plastic - with an internal Magnesium frame in the base. This design helps to increase stability and durability, without increasing weight and costs too much. The haptic quality is below more expensive models like the ThinkPad T14s or X1 Carbon, but Lenovo tries to mend that with its signature rubberized-coating. However, the black paint is susceptible when it comes to dust and dirt. There is no wobbling, thanks to the drop-down hinges, which also enable an opening angle of 180 degrees.
Connectivity: ThinkPad T14 Gen 5 with RJ45-Ethernet
The port selection is identical to the ThinkPad T14 Gen 5 Intel. At this point, the AMD model even officially sports Thunderbolt 4 instead of USB4. Notable is the RJ45-Ethernet connector, a rare port these days.
Communication
Different from the Intel version, the AMD T14 does not use Intel Wi-Fi. Instead, a Qualcomm solution is present. This Wi-Fi card is slightly slower, but overall still plenty fast and dependable.
Our review device has a CAT6 4G/LTE card. There also is a physical SIM slot. Alternatively, an eSIM can be used.

Maintenance
For the first time since the Lenovo ThinkPad T14 Gen 2 AMD, the AMD version of the ThinkPad T14 has upgradeable RAM again - T14 Gen 3 and T14 Gen 4 AMD had completely soldered RAM. In contrast, the ThinkPad T14 Gen 5 AMD has two SO-DIMM slots, so the memory is completely upgradeable and repairable. The same is true for the M.2 2280 SSD, the WWAN modem is also modular. Only the Wi-Fi card is soldered. New for the T14 Gen 5 is also the user replaceable CRU battery. To get to all these components, only a few clips and seven screws have to be loosened.
One special feature of the T14 series is the user replaceable keyboard. To remove it, the two screws marked with the keyboard symbol on the bottom have to be loosened. Afterward, the keyboard can be slid back and removed.
Input devices: Lenovo ThinkPad T14 is ideal for heavy typists
As always, the input devices of the ThinkPad T14 Gen 5 are one of the areas where ThinkPads can shine. While the touchpad is made out of plastic and comparably small, it works great. With the TrackPoint, there is a great alternative input method present, which clearly beats the touchpad in drag and drop operations. The centerpiece of the ThinkPad laptop is the great keyboard with 1.5 mm. It offers a very comfortable typing feel, two stage backlight and a sensible layout. Working with the ThinkPad T14 Gen 5 AMD is a pleasure.
Display: Low power, slow screen
The following 14-inch 16:10 screens are offered by Lenovo in the ThinkPad T14 Gen 5 AMD:
- WUXGA (1,920 x 1,200), IPS, 400 cd/m², 45 % NTSC, matte
- WUXGA (1,920 x 1,200), IPS, 400 cd/m², 45 % NTSC, matte, on-Cell Touch
- WUXGA (1,920 x 1,200), IPS, 400 cd/m², 100 % sRGB, matte, Low Power
- WUXGA (1,920 x 1,200), IPS, 500 cd/m², 100 % sRGB, matte, on-Cell Touch, ePrivacy
- 2.8K (2,880 x 1,800), OLED, 400 cd/m², 100 % DCI P3, semi-matte/semi-glossy, HDR, 120 Hz
Lenovo manages to beat expectations when it comes to brightness. We measured an average brightness of 439 cd/m² for this AUO panel. In our comparison group, only the 2.5K IPS screen of the Asus ExpertBook P5 is brighter.
One weakness of this panel: it is rather slow. This is a 60 Hz panel with long response-times to boot.

Performance: Hawk Point is fast
There are only two processors on offer for this ThinkPad laptop. Buyers have the choice between the AMD Ryzen Pro 5 8540U and the AMD Ryzen Pro 7 8840U. Depending on the CPU, either the AMD Radeon 760M or 780M are included.
Unlike with previous AMD ThinkPads, the RAM is completely upgradeable. Two SO-DIMM slots enable a maximum of 64 GB DDR5-5600 according to Lenovo. As for storage, Lenovo uses a single M.2 2280 SSD for a maximum of 2 TB.
Testing conditions
The Lenovo ThinkPad T14 Gen 5 AMD has three different performance modes, which can be selected via the Windows settings. They influence the power limits, power consumption of the processor and thus its performance (PL1 = performance under sustained load, PL2 = short boost performance):
- Best battery life: PL1 12 W / PL2 12 W
- Balanced: PL1 24 W / PL2 31 W
- Best performance: PL1 28 W / PL2 51 W
Our benchmarks were performance in the profile "best performance" enabled.
Processor
The AMD Ryzen Pro 7 8840U is a mobile processor of the "Hawk Point" series by AMD, which is based on the Ryzen 7040 technology from 2023. For more comprehensive comparisons, we recommend using our CPU comparison list.
For a mobile office laptop, the Lenovo ThinkPad T14 Gen 5 AMD offers a lot of performance. In our benchmarks, the ThinkPad takes the top spot thanks to the high power limit of 51 W. Under constant load, this level of performance can not be sustained. Here, the multicore scores are on a level with the predecessor of the thinner ThinkPad T14s Gen 6 AMD with the AMD Ryzen AI 7 Pro 360. Compared with the ThinkPad T14 Gen 5 Intel, the AMD model is clearly better, even when it comes to single core performance. Things are different when the T14 G5 AMD is put up against the Lunar Lake chip of the Asus ExpertBook P5: Lunar Lake is slower for multicore load, but faster when only one core is utilized. The ThinkPad T14s Gen 6 AMD also has the upper hand when it comes to single core load.
We did not detect any performance limitation in battery mode.

GPU
The integrated GPU solution of the AMD Ryzen processor answers to the name AMD Radeon 780M. The RNDA 3 GPU is able to handily beat the Intel Graphics of the Lenovo ThinkPad T14 Gen 5 Intel, both in the synthetic tests and in gaming. The AMD model is definitely better suited for graphics intensive tasks. That is only true when compared against Intel Meteor Lake U though, as Lunar Lake's Intel ARC 140V is roughly 15 percent faster.
After work, the ThinkPad T14 Gen 5 AMD can be used to play games. For newer titles, the graphical fidelity and resolution have to be dialed down significantly, though.

System noise
In terms of system noise, the Lenovo ThinkPad T14 Gen 5 is a little two-faced. When idling, the fan stays quiet. This is the case even under moderate load (profile: Balanced). Under maximum load (profile: Best performance), the ThinkPad ramps up the fan, reaching a noise level of 47 dB(a). None of the competitors gets as loud, the ThinkPad T14 Gen 5 Intel stays quieter, too (43 dB(a)). If you want to use the ThinkPad with the fan mostly turned off, the mode "Balanced" should be used at all times.
Unfortunately, the ThinkPad T14 Gen 5 AMD did exhibit coil whine.

Temperature
To achieve the good performance, Lenovo allows for high chassis temperatures. We measured more than 60 degrees Celsius / 143 F on the bottom of the ThinkPad T14 Gen 5 AMD during the stress test - an extreme workload for sure, but the temperature is still dangerously high. At least, the palmrest stays cool, so the laptop can be used comfortable under load, if it sits on a desk and not on a lap.
During the stress test, the Lenovo laptop can cool 23 W, even after an hour under load. We did not detect any throttling.
(-) The maximum temperature on the upper side is 51 °C / 124 F, compared to the average of 34.3 °C / 94 F, ranging from 21.2 to 62.5 °C for the class Office.
(-) The bottom heats up to a maximum of 61.5 °C / 143 F, compared to the average of 36.8 °C / 98 F
(+) In idle usage, the average temperature for the upper side is 28.3 °C / 83 F, compared to the device average of 29.5 °C / 85 F.
(±) 3: The average temperature for the upper side is 32.9 °C / 91 F, compared to the average of 29.5 °C / 85 F for the class Office.
(+) The palmrests and touchpad are cooler than skin temperature with a maximum of 29.5 °C / 85.1 F and are therefore cool to the touch.
(±) The average temperature of the palmrest area of similar devices was 27.6 °C / 81.7 F (-1.9 °C / -3.4 F).

Power Consumption
The comparison with the Lenovo ThinkPad T14 Gen 5 Intel shows that Intel's Meteor Lake platform offers a low power consumption when idling. As soon as there is a little load on the system, however, the AMD model is more efficient.
At max, the Lenovo ThinkPad T14 Gen 5 AMD consumes 66.3 W. Since the power consumption quickly stabilizes at 50 W, the 65 W charger is more than enough.

Battery Life
The battery life of the Lenovo ThinkPad T14 Gen 5 AMD disappoints. The AMD ThinkPad only gets less battery life out of the internal 52.5 Wh battery than the Intel model. We measured ten hours in the Wi-Fi test (150 cd/m²), which is not bad, but also not good for a laptop with a low power screen. The Lenovo ThinkPad T14s Gen 6 AMD with its Ryzen AI CPU offers much more endurance. The same is true for the Asus ExpertBook P5 with Lunar Lake.
