If the ThinkPad brand has a heart, it is the ThinkPad T series. And at the core of that heart is the Lenovo ThinkPad T14 - the regular model of the T ThinkPads with a 14-inch screen. The ThinkPad T is around since the year 2000, the ThinkPad T14 Gen 5 is the newest edition. It is available with both an AMD Ryzen 8000 and the Intel Core Ultra Series 1, we are reviewing the Meteor Lake version. New for this year's ThinkPad T14 is a bigger focus on modularity. For this purpose, the entire design has been redone from the ground up.

Chassis: Lenovo stays true to the ThinkPad T design
Lenovo renovates the ThinkPads regularly, even if some may think that ThinkPad laptops never change. Lenovo used the design of the T490 for three years until the ThinkPad T14 Gen 2 in 2021. By comparison, the template introduced with the ThinkPad T14 Gen 3 just lasted for one additional generation.
In comparison with the preceding ThinkPad T14 Gen 4, the Lenovo ThinkPad T14 Gen 5 changes many details. Quickly apparent is the return to a pure black chassis color instead of dark gray. Lenovo goes even further here, eliminating almost all silver design elements, coloring the hinges and the ThinkPad logo black as well. The logo on the lid is still a glossy sticker, while the logo on the inside is debossed. The only remaining silver part is the Lenovo logo on the lid. New are the speaker holes to the side of the keyboard, which used to be above it. The most controversial change: The prominent camera bump on the lid. It makes opening the lid easier and allows for slightly smaller screen bezels, but it somewhat goes against the boxy design. If one likes or dislikes, this is a matter of taste.
While things on the outside change, the construction stays as it was. The ThinkPad T14 Gen 5 is made out of plastic, a glass fiber composite to be exact. In the base unit area, the plastic is reinforced with a magnesium frame, which gives the palmrest and keyboard great stability. Overall, the ThinkPad T14 is not quite as high-quality to the touch as the slightly more expensive ThinkPad T14s, which has an outer hull made out of magnesium and aluminum. The chassis is also slightly more prone to flex, but stability is still good overall. The workmanship of the laptop is flawless, and all surfaces are coated with a smooth black paint. This feels nice, but also gets dirty fast. A microfiber cloth is helpful for that.
The hinges, which are no anodized black, still enable 180 degree opening. The screen does not wiggle, and it is possible to open it with one hand.
With 1.46 kg / 3.23 lbs, the Lenovo ThinkPad T14 Gen 5 is not that heavy, but also not one of the most lightweight systems. For the everyday commute to the office and back, it is lightweight enough. The competition is pretty much as heavy, only the Dell Latitude 7440 is more lightweight. Notable is the higher thickness of the ThinkPad. Lenovo is not quite honest here with their official specifications - we measure a thickness of 21.7 mm, Lenovo states 17.7 mm.
Connectivity: ThinkPad T14 still with RJ45-Ethernet
Lenovo does not change the port selection. It is still a mix of old (2x USB A, HDMI, RJ45) and new ports (2x Thunderbolt 4). A small change happened with the RJ45-Ethernet port, a now rare sight in the laptop market. With the new ThinkPad T14 Gen 5, the RJ45 has a trap-door mechanism, as opposed to the preceding model that still had a full-sized RJ45.
Communication
Buyers of the Lenovo ThinkPad T14 Gen 5 can configure it with the Intel AX211 or Intel BE200 - with the latter being a Wi-Fi 7 module. Our review device uses the older Wi-Fi 6tE model. It produced stable and high transfer rates.
Aside from RJ45-Ethernet, Bluetooth and Wi-Fi, the Lenovo ThinkPad T14 Gen 5 Intel also has WWAN. Of course, LTE is an optional feature. Our review sample contains the Quectel EM061K-GL, a CTA6 4G/LTE card. Alternatively, 5G is available as well.
Webcam
The resolution of the webcam of five megapixels is adequate. However, the webcam is still far away from the quality of a smartphone selfie camera. For video conferencing when the lighting is good, the quality is good enough.

Security
As a business laptop, the Lenovo ThinkPad T14 Gen 5 has many security features to protect the valuable data of its business users. For one, it has a Kensington lock slot to protect against thieves. Should the ThinkPad be stolen regardless, it has a fingerprint sensor, a smart card reader and an infrared camera for Windows Hello. All of these enable a fast and secure log-in. Software wise, Lenovo puts in CompuTrace into the BIOS and a TPM 2.0 security chip protects the fingerprint-reader data. Lenovo also protects the privacy of the users, as the webcam is equipped with a mechanical camera shutter. Additionally, an optional ePrivacy screen makes reading the screen from the side in public spaces harder.
Accessories
Lenovo only puts a 65 W USB C charger in the box, no other accessories are included.
Maintenance
Lenovo put a huge focus on improving the modularity with this redesign. Seven screws and a few clips hold the bottom cover in place. After it is removed, all components besides the keyboard and screen are accessible. The screws remain stuck in the cover, so they can not get lost.
The biggest news: The RAM is completely modular again, for the first time in the standard T series since 2018's ThinkPad T480. The two SO-DIMM slots are beneath a protective shield, one of the two slots remains open. Also, somewhat easier is replacing the battery. The battery is still screwed down, but no longer requires removing a cable. It also bears a QR code that links a video tutorial for the battery removal. Also, customers are now allowed to change the battery themselves. Before, only the service technicians were allowed to do it. Still upgradeable is the SSD and the modular WWAN card in its M.2 2242 bay. On the other hand, the Wi-Fi card is still soldered to the motherboard. The same is true for the USB-C ports that are used to charge the system.
Exemplary: Removing the keyboard is still incredibly easy. Just two of the bottom screws secure it, they are market with a keyboard symbol. Once they are loosened, the keyboard can be pushed back and removed once the two cables are disconnected. None of the competitors, except for the Framework Laptop, have such an easily removable keyboard.
Sustainability
Lenovo is trying hard to make their devices more sustainable. Aside from the better repairability of the T14 Gen 5, the device uses recycled materials for some parts of the chassis, as well as compostable packaging. Lenovo publishes the CO₂ data for the production of this laptop on a dedicated website. Also, since this is a ThinkPad, the T14 Gen 5 will receive software updates for many years and replacement parts will also be available for quite a while. As always, Lenovo publishes repair tutorials both in written and video form.
Warranty
Like for most models of the T series, Lenovo gives it a three-year warranty, which can be prolonged to five years. The user can also upgrade the warranty with better service, like on-site repairs. By default, the ThinkPad T14 Gen 5 has to be sent in. Since this is a business device, the bring-in warranty extends world-wide.
Input devices: Lenovo makes use easier for visually impaired
Keyboard
From a macro view, the keyboard remains the same as the one of the preceding ThinkPad T14 Gen 4. It is still a full-size keyboard with 1.5 mm key travel. Only a few keys on the right side are slightly smaller than on desktop keyboards. The blueish-white LED backlight still has two levels of intensity.
The changes that are happening are confined to the layout. Lenovo swaps the Ctrl and FN keys, placing the Ctrl key to the left of the FN key for the first time in ThinkPad history. For long time ThinkPad users, this will require some getting used to. People coming from other laptop brands will have an easier time. The keys can still be switched around in Lenovo Commercial Vantage or the UEFI-BIOS. Also, new is the Copilot key, which has the alternate function of menu key. The PrtScr key was shifted to F9 to make room. Also, Lenovo has introduced haptic markers on more keys like FN, Ins, Enter and the volume keys, to make the keyboard more usable for blind people.
Working with the keyboard is a breeze, as it combines a good layout with grouped F keys and dedicated navigation keys with a wonderful typing experience. It is still one of the best laptop keyboards.
Touchpad and TrackPoint
While Lenovo has renovated the keyboard on the outside, there are no real changes to the UltraNav. It is still a combination of the TrackPoint with dedicated mouse buttons and a mechanical clickpad. Both input devices work great. The TrackPoint did not exhibit the strange problems we had with the ThinkPad T14s Gen 5. The touchpad is medium-sized, and it has a plastic surface that enables fingers to glide smoothly, but gets dirty fast and does not feel as nice as glass. The TrackPoint, which has a new douple-tap quick settings menu, still has its strengths when performing drag and drop operations and in tight spaces. Both input devices have their unique strengths. Both enable a precise manipulation of the mouse cursor.
Display: matte low power screen in the ThinkPad laptop
The choice of six 16:10 14-inch screens remains difficult for customers. Lenovo has taken a few measures to change up things, like a higher brightness for the base panel or higher refresh rate for the OLED variant:
- WUXGA (1,920 x 1,200), IPS, 400 cd/m², 45 % NTSC, matte
- WUXGA (1,920 x 1,200), IPS, 400 cd/m², 45 % NTSC, matte, On-Cell Touch
- WUXGA (1,920 x 1,200), IPS, 400 cd/m², 100 % sRGB, matte, Low Power
- WUXGA (1,920 x 1,200), IPS, 500 cd/m², 100 % sRGB, matte, ePrivacy, On-Cell Touch
- 2.2K (2,240 x 1,400), IPS, 300 cd/m², 100 % sRGB, matte
- 2.8K (2,880 x 1,800), OLED, 400 cd/m², 100 % DCI-P3, semi-matte/semi-glossy, HDR, 120 Hz
The panel is made by China Star Optoelectronics (CSOT), a daughter company of TCL, which took over Samsung's former LCD manufacturing. Sadly, it does not quite live up to expectations and only delivers 372 cd/m² instead of 400 cd/m². This means it is one of the darker panels in comparison. At least, response times are better than the competition.

Even ex factory, the CSOT panel displays colors pretty accurate. A calibration with the X-Rite i1Pro 3 only delivered a small improvement. The color profile we created is available for download for free in the gray box above, as always.
The screen can not display the sRGB color gamut quite to its full extent, as the coverage sits at 94.6 percent.

Performance: Meteor Lake U lags behind Ryzen
Lenovo lists eight different CPUs for the Lenovo ThinkPad T14 Gen 5 Intel. A closer look reveals that the choice is not that big in the end: In general, both Meteor Lake H and Meteor Lake U are available, but the four H CPUs (Intel Core Ultra 5 125H, Core Ultra 5 135H, Core Ultra 7 155H, Core Ultra 7 165H) are not available for purchase as far as normal consumers are concerned. This leaves the U chips, where there are both vPro (Intel Core Ultra 5 135U, Core Ultra 7 165U) and non vPro variants (Intel Core Ultra 5 125U, Core Ultra 7 155U). Not an option anymore is a dedicated GPU. For the first time in many years, the T14 is just available with an iGPU. Mostly, this means the Intel Graphics. Intel ARC is only part of the H CPUs.
With the update to the Meteor Lake platform and upgradeable RAM, the final step to DDR5 is made. In the two DDR5-5600 SO-DIMM slots, Lenovo puts in up to 64 GB RAM. More limited is the T14 G5 in terms of mass-storage, it only has a single M.2 2280 slot. The maximum capacity ex factory reaches 2 TB.
Testing conditions
Three energy profiles are available via the Windows settings, which influence the power limits of the CPU. In any case, the CPU can consume up to 30 Watt. Only the consumption under sustained load (PL1) differs:
- Best battery life: PL1 10 W / PL2 30 W
- Balanced: PL1 13 W / PL2 30 W
- Best performance: PL1 21 W / PL2 30 W
Processor
The Intel Core Ultra 7 155U is a recent processor of the Core Ultra Series 1, also known as "Meteor Lake". The CPU has two big P cores and eight small E cores in the Compute tile, plus two additional E cores in the SoC tile. The clock rates range widely: While the P cores reach 4.8 GHz, the eight E cores clock in at 3.8 GHz. The small E cores are limited to 2.1 GHz. For more comprehensive comparisons, you can use our CPU comparison table.
In our sustained load loop with Cinebench R15, the performance moves in a sort of wave-movement up and down - alternating between 25 and 20 W. Sustained multicore performance is improved over the predecessor T14 Gen 4 Intel, though this one was equipped with a slower i5. However, compared with the AMD Ryzen models, the ThinkPad T14 Gen 5 Intel is not quite competitive. When all benchmarks are put into an average, the ThinkPad T14 Gen 5 matches the older Raptor Lake laptops, which is mostly due to the weaker single core performance of the Meteor Lake chips.
In the battery mode, the Lenovo ThinkPad T14 Gen 5 scores around 8,200 points in the Cinebench R23 multicore - a drop-off by 20 percent.

Mass storage
Lenovo buys their SSDs from multiple suppliers. In the case of the Lenovo ThinkPad T14 Gen 5 Intel, it's a model made by Western Digital. The SSD has a capacity of 512 GB and is connected via a NVMe PCIe 4.0 interface. Its performance is average, neither great nor bad.

GPU
The iGPU of the Lenovo ThinkPad T14 Gen 5 is the Intel Graphics with 4 ARC units. The performance is improved over the Intel Iris Xe of the preceding ThinkPad, which had the weaker version with 80 execution units. Overall, the performance is more than good enough for everyday office usage and web browsing. Comparable AMD solutions have more horsepower - the variant of the T14 Gen 5 with an H CPU could be more competitive and even handle some gaming. This is not really possible with the ThinkPad T14 G5, but that is not that much of a problem for a business focused system.

Speakers
Despite the more prominent placement of the speakers to the side of the keyboard, the user facing speakers deliver a middling performance. They lack in base and volume, typical for many laptops.

Power management: The battery life is good, but not great
Power consumption
Surprisingly, the Lenovo ThinkPad T14 Gen 5 is somewhat more inefficient than the ThinkPad T14 Gen 4. It does consume less than the Framework Laptop 13 or the Dell Latitude 7440, which both do have higher res screens.
For the maximum consumption of 63.8 W, the 65 W charger is powerful enough.

Battery life
Two batteries are available for the Lenovo ThinkPad T14 Gen 5: A small 39.3 Wh battery as well as a bigger 52.5 Wh one. Our review sample achieves more than ten hours in the Wi-Fi test (150 cd/m²) with the bigger battery. Endurance is slightly better than the predecessor, but still lags behind the business laptops with AMD Ryzen 7000.

Verdict for the ThinkPad T14 Gen 5: Dependable, upgradeable office laptop
With the ThinkPad T14 Gen 5, Lenovo has not just implemented the usual platform update to the newest Intel CPUs. The design was completely done from scratch. A redesign that has worked out great.
Many of the basic attributes stay true to the ThinkPad T series: The laptop still has a robust construction of plastic and magnesium. The wide array of ports remains the same, keeping the RJ45 Ethernet port on the T14 line. Also, the input devices remain high quality, with Lenovo just making some adjustments to the layout. Typing for a long time and working efficiently is easy with the ThinkPad input. The laptop has WWAN and optional Wi-Fi 7. For the enterprise sector, the ThinkPad T14 G5 also offers many security features.
With the focus on a better repairability and modularity, Lenovo seemingly follows the lead of the Framework Laptop - the RAM is once again upgradeability and changing the battery is easier than before. Plus, Lenovo keeps the user replaceable keyboard in the ThinkPad T14 Gen 5 - a feature that the business competition by Dell and HP does not offer. Lenovo could go even further by making the USB-C ports and Wi-Fi module modular too, but the steps they have taken here are very welcome regardless.
If the ThinkPad T14 Gen 5 has a weakness, then it's the CPU. Meteor Lake is an improvement over Raptor Lake, but still lags behind AMD. The performance just can not match the Ryzen model. Also, the fan of the T14 G5 is a little bit too aggressive for our taste. Other aspects like the battery life and the screen of the ThinkPad are neither great nor terrible - in both areas, the office laptop is suitable for everyday use in an office.
The ThinkPad T14 Gen 5 is a successful redesign with a focus on improved repairability. It is a great device for enterprise customers with many useful features, even if the processor is not the most efficient on the market.
Business customers know what they get with the Lenovo ThinkPad T14 Gen 5 Intel: A good office laptop for their employees, which might not win an efficiency trophy, but delivers solid performance and makes working easier. It is a dependable laptop that offers a great amount of flexibility.
If aspects like the Ethernet port or user replaceable keyboard are expendable, the HP EliteBook 845 G10 with its Ryzen CPU could be a great alternative. Otherwise, the Framework Laptop might entice buyers who want even more modularity. Also of interest is the AMD variant of the ThinkPad T14 Gen 5 - a device, which we will surely review as well.
