For many years, it seemed like ThinkPads of the T series would only become less modular. This ends now, the Lenovo ThinkPad T14 Gen 5 returns to a design with two SO-DIMM slots. It is a great office laptop, even though Meteor Lake U could be faster.

Lenovo’s ThinkPad T14 Gen 5 might be good enough to get the job done, but it still falls short in some major categories that make a good business laptop, particularly the battery life. The battery life might be more forgivable if the ThinkPad T14 Gen 5 aced all of the other crucial categories, but mushy left- and right-click buttons, a less-than-premium feeling chassis, and some general chunkiness make this laptop hard to justify when competitors are excelling in all of the above categories. This is still a solid business laptop that will get you by and if you’re a fan of the classic (albeit outdated) design of the ThinkPad, then this might be the pick for you. That being said, you should fully assess your options before smashing the “Add to cart” button like it’s the ThinkPad’s TrackPoint because competitors like Acer and Apple are offering a lot for a similar price point.

I have to admit, I have some mixed feelings about the ThinkPad T14 Gen 5. I adore the concept of repairability. And from a value perspective, the fact that you can change out the RAM, hard drive, even the battery, with little more than a screwdriver and a guitar pic, is tantalizing. You should be able to make this laptop last longer, in theory, than a similarly spec’d thinner laptop. I laud those choices. However, at nearly $2,000 that value proposition isn’t as great as it could be. It’s expensive. And it’s not even as repairable as a Framework laptop, although it does come from a name you can be sure will be around in ten years. Meanwhile, some of the benchmark testing is hard to ignore. In my everyday usage, I didn’t notice that the laptop seemed any slower than others I’ve used in recent months.

The Intel version of the ThinkPad T14 Gen 5 is a well-built office machine with a capable keyboard, modern port selection, and snappy performance. That’s due to the high clocks of the CPU which is impressive given the single-heat pipe thermal system with a quiet fan. The 1200p screen (NV140WUM-N49 (LEN403D)) is a regular IPS model that is good enough for work. The unit is PWM-free and offers a pretty high max brightness of 455 nits. If you want better sRGB coverage, look for a machine with the optional 2.2K or 2.8K OLED variants. For future upgrades, you can rely on a pair of SODIMMs for DDR5-5600MHz RAM. However, we don’t like the fact that the Wi-Fi card is soldered and the limited storage capabilities because of the single M.2 slot. Still, the ThinkPad T14 Gen 5 is one of the best devices in its class thanks to the adequate built quality, the very long battery life, and the many security features.

AMD or Intel - Lenovo gives customers who buy the ThinkPad T14 Gen 5 the choice. The business laptop offers many great connectivity and security options, as well as plenty upgradeability, coupled with a good performance. This performance has a price, however.

Lenovo: Lenovo ("Le" from English legend, novo (Latin) for new) was founded in 1984 as a Chinese computer trading company. As of 2004, the company was the largest laptop manufacturer in China and, after acquiring IBM's PC division in 2005, the fourth largest in the world. In addition to desktops and notebooks, the company manufactures monitors, projectors, servers, etc, and specializes in developing, manufacturing and marketing consumer electronics, personal computers, software, enterprise solutions and related services.
In 2016, the company ranked first in the world in computer sales. It still held it in 2023 with about 23% global market share. Important product lines are Thinkpad, Legion and Ideapad.
In 2011, it acquired a majority stake in Medion AG, a European computer hardware manufacturer. In 2014, Motorola Mobility was purchased, which gave Lenovo a boost in the smartphone market.
Modern games should be playable with these graphics cards at low settings and resolutions. Casual gamers may be happy with these cards.
Intel Graphics 4-Core: Integrated graphics card based on the Xe LPG architecture (similar to the dedicated Arc GPUs, but with a focus on efficiency). Provides 4 Xe cores (64 Xe vector engines) and 4 ray tracing units.
AMD Radeon 780M: Integrated graphics card in the Ryzen 7040 mobile series APUs based on the RDNA3 architecture with 12 CUs (= 768 shaders) and a clock speed of up to 3 GHz.

Intel Meteor Lake-U:
Ultra 7 155U: A mid-range Meteor Lake chip that debuted in December 2023. This 1st Gen Core Ultra processor has come to replace 13th generation Core processors; it has 12 cores (2 + 8 + 2) and 14 threads at its disposal. Its Performance cores, of which there are 2, run at up to 4.8 GHz while its Efficient cores, of which there are 10 (8 main cores plus 2 extra ones found in the Low Power Island) run at up to 3.8 GHz. The 4-core Intel Arc Graphics, just out of the oven, serves as the integrated graphics adapter - this runs at up to 1.95 GHz - and there is a bevy of other brand-new technologies on offer as well including the integrated AI Boost NPU with two Gen 3 engines for hardware AI workload acceleration. This laptop processor's Base power consumption is 15 W, with 57 W being its maximum Intel-recommended Turbo power consumption.
Ultra 5 125U: A lower mid-range Meteor Lake chip that debuted in December 2023. AMD Hawk Point (Zen 4/4c):
R7 8840U: A powerful laptop processor (APU) of the Hawk Point family. This isn't an entirely new APU; instead, the R7 8840U is an R7 7840U in disguise, with higher clock speeds on the Ryzen AI NPU as the only difference. Its eight Zen 4 cores run at 3.3 GHz to 5.1 GHz and are SMT-enabled for a total of 16 processing threads. The great Radeon 780M iGPU is responsible for 3D processing and similar duties.

14.00:
14 inch display size represents a middle ground between the small subnotebook formats and the screens of the standard 15 inch laptops.
The reason for the popularity of mid-sized displays is that this size is reasonably easy on the eyes, provides good resolutions with usable detail sizes, yet does not consume too much power and the devices can still be reasonably compact.
In the past, 14-inch devices were very rare, but now they are the standard for laptops after the 15-inchers.

75.48%: This rating is not earth-shattering. This rating must actually be seen as average, since there are about as many devices with worse ratings as better ones. A purchase recommendation can only be seen with a lot of goodwill, unless it is about websites that generally rate strictly.
