HP EliteBook 845 G11 Laptop Review - No major changes, but still one of the best business notebooks
Minor update with Thunderbolt 4.
HP does not change a lot for the EliteBook 845 G11 and only updates the processor to the Ryzen 7 Pro 8840HS (Zen4). You also get Thunderbolt 4 support now and the very good IPS screen as well as the excellent keyboard remain unchanged.Andreas Osthoff 👁 (translated by Andreas Osthoff) Published 🇩🇪 🇫🇷 ...
Verdict - EliteBook 845 G11 is very good, but the cooling solution is still the weak point
HP's EliteBook 845 G11 is a very good business laptop, but the changes compared to the previous generation are small. The chassis is still very sturdy and leaves a high-quality impression. There is an optional WWAN module and you get one of the best keyboards in the mobile segment. Thunderbolt 4 is now supported, but there is no Wi-Fi 7 option.
The AMD Zen4 processor is not the latest model, but still offers plenty of performance and it has the advantage of upgradeable RAM (current Zen5 chips are still limited to soldered RAM). However, the HS processor also reveals the issue of the EliteBook, because the cooling unit only consists of one fan. High power limits mean that the fan is quite busy. EliteBook models with U-series processors have lower power limits and much quieter cooling as a result.
There are different display options. We cannot recommend the optional SureView panel with 800 nits since the image quality is severely affected by the integrated privacy filter. You therefore have the choice between the WQHD screen in the test device, which offers very good image quality without PWM flickering and brightness levels above 500 nits. However, it also consumes quite a bit of power compared to the standard 1080p screen. The latter is a good choice if you need longer battery runtimes or work on an external screen most of the time anyway.

Price and availability
The base model of the EliteBook 845 G11 with the Ryzen 7 8840U and the 1080p screen is available for $1,099 at Amazon.

Details here
The 11th generation of the HP EliteBook 845 only got small updates with AMD's Ryzen 8000-series CPUs, which still gives you the choice between U-series and more powerful HS-series chips. Our review unit is a high-end spec with the Ryzen 7 Pro 8840HS, 32 GB RAM, and the high-resolution IPS display with 500 nits and 120 Hz for a price of around 1900 Euros (~$1960).
Specifications
Case & Connectivity
The chassis design did not change compared to the previous model. The silver metal surfaces leave a sophisticated impression and the surfaces are not very prone to fingerprints. There are no stability or build quality issues, but the 14-inch laptop is not particularly light at almost 1.5 kg. Maintenance options are good with a replaceable Wi-Fi module, M.2-2280 SSD as well as two SO-DIMM slots for RAM modules (up to 64 GB).
The connectivity got an upgrade and the two USB-C ports now support Thunderbolt 4. The Wi-Fi module supports the 6E standard, but not the latest Wi-Fi 7 technology. An LTE modem is available and the 5 MP camera takes decent pictures, even though Windows Studio effects for the webcam are not available.

Sustainability
The EliteBook 845 G11 meets the requirements for the EPEAT Gold standard, but HP does not communicate the amount of recycled materials or the CO2 footprint during the manufacturing process. A maintenance and repair guide is available.
Input Devices - Excellent keyboard
The keyboard of the EliteBook 845 G11 is still one of the best laptop keyboards on the market. Key travel is around 1.5 mm and the feedback is very crisp and precise. Subjectively, we prefer the keyboard over the current ThinkPad models. The small arrow keys and the power button, which is integrated in the upper right corner of the keyboard, are the only two aspects you have to get used to. The right Ctrl key was replaced with a dedicated Copilot key, and the fingerprint scanner is located underneath the keyboard. The clickpad works very well; the smooth surface provides good gliding capabilities and all inputs are executed without issues (including multi-touch gestures).
Display - Matte IPS panel with 120 Hz
HP still offers different displays for the EliteBook 845 G11. The low power 1080p screen is a good option if you need long battery runtimes. We cannot recommend the optional SureView panel with a brightness of 800 nits, because the integrated privacy filter noticeably affects the overall image quality. Our review unit is equipped with the high-resolution IPS screen (2560 x 1600 pixel, 16:10) and a frequency of 120 Hz. The subjective image quality is still very good and there is no PWM flickering with fast response times. The matte screen is a great option for productive tasks.
The advertised brightness of 500 nits is clearly surpassed at most measurement spots and we determine an average value of 533 nits. However, the brightness distribution is not very good at just 83 %. The black value (0.47 cd/m²) is not that great, either, so black images do not really black. OLED panels are superior in this respect. The maximum contrast is above 1200:1, which is still okay. The minimum brightness of 31 cd/m² is a bit too high for very dark environments.

Our analysis with the professional CalMAN software shows decent results for the default color profile and there are no major issues except for a slightly too warm color temperature. Our own calibration (the corresponding profile can be downloaded for free in the box above) improves the overall image quality further and corrects the color temperature. Only blue misses the target value of 3 and the panel covers both the sRGB as well as P3 gamut. However, there is no option to switch from P3 to sRGB.

The matte panel works well outdoors, but you should avoid direct sunlight. The viewing angle stability of the IPS screen is good.
Performance - AMD Zen4 with 32 GB RAM
HP does not use the latest AMD Zen5 mobile processors yet, but they are only available with soldered RAM (up to 32 GB) for now. Thanks to the two SO-DIMM slots, it is easy and cheap to upgrade the RAM of the EliteBook 845 G11 up to 64 GB.
Review settings
HP does not equip its business laptops with additional power profiles. We performed the following benchmarks and measurements with the Best Performance Windows setting. The profiles are also very close together (basically 35-41 Watts), so the influence on the performance as well as the emissions is small.
Processor - Ryzen 7 Pro 8840HS
The AMD Ryzen 7 Pro 8840HS is the business version of the Ryzen 7 8840HS with extended security/managements features, but the specs are otherwise identical. It is still a Zen4 processor, which was already used in the previous EliteBook 845 G10. The power limits are unchanged at 51/41 Watts and the overall performance is just slightly higher than before. There is a noticeable different to the configurations with U-series chips, since the power limits are much lower at 30/25 Watts.
The performance is stable both under sustained workloads and on battery power. Additional CPU benchmarks are available in our tech section.

Storage Devices
Our review unit is equipped with the 1 TB model of the Kioxia XG8, and you can use 909 GB for your own files/apps after the initial setup. The transfer rates of the PCIe-4.0 SSD are very good, but the performance drops around 38 % under sustained workloads. We are still talking about more than 4 GB/s, so the effects are negligible in practice. More SSD benchmarks are listed here.
