Verdict - The ExpertBook PM5 G2 seems unbalanced
In our test, the new Asus ExpertBook PM5 G2 leaves a mixed impression. The large 16-inch business laptop looks sleek, but its aluminum chassis has slight creaking noises and somewhat wobbly hinges. The keyboard is comfortable and backlit, but the mechanical clicks of the large ClickPad feel a bit cheap. The connectivity and security features are adequate, and in addition to an Ethernet port, it also includes a modern Wi-Fi 7 module.
The built-in AMD Ryzen AI 9 HX 470 offers good and stable multi-core performance, but the processor’s high TDP places a heavy load on the single cooler, which can therefore become very loud. At least Asus offers quieter power profiles, allowing the device to remain very quiet under full load if desired.
The built-in matte WQHD display with a 144 Hz refresh rate offers good image quality and is superior to many business competitors in this regard. The panel is excellent for work, and battery life is still very good.
Another issue is the meager memory configuration with only 16 GB of RAM, though this can at least be easily upgraded with an additional module. All in all, the ExpertBook PM5 G2 is a good business laptop, but given its starting price of around 1,700 euros, these quality issues really shouldn’t be happening.
Pros
Cons
Price and Availability
The ExpertBook PM5 G2 with the Ryzen AI 9 HX 470 is currently available in Germany only with 64 GB of RAM and a 1-TB SSD for around 2,250 euros. Amazon also offers the version with the slower Ryzen AI 7 445 starting at around 1,800 euros.
Specifications
Case, Features, and Input Devices
The ExpertBook PM5 G2 features an aluminum chassis in a dark gray finish and is resistant to fingerprints. The design looks high-end, but the impression of quality suffers slightly because of the wobbly hinge and slight creaking noises when handling (from both the base unit and the hinge). In this regard, the ExpertBook falls short of competitors like the ThinkPad T16 or the EliteBook 8. However, the serviceability is very good (2x SO-DIMM, M.2-2280 SSD, Wi-Fi). The keyboard features three-level backlighting and a full-size numeric keypad. It offers 1.5 mm of travel and a comfortable typing feel, though not quite as good as on Asus’s multimedia/gaming laptops. The ClickPad is huge (15 x 10 cm) and offers good glide, but it's shifted slightly to the left, and the mechanical clicks in the lower area feel a bit cheap.
In terms of ports, you get plenty of USB ports, including USB 4.0, as well as an HDMI output. For networking, there’s a Gigabit Ethernet port and a Wi-Fi 7 module, though the latter operates at only 160 MHz. Transfer rates therefore top out at ~2–2.2 Gbit/s but are very stable. The 1080p webcam with a mechanical shutter produces only below-average video quality.

Display - WQHD IPS at 144 Hz
Asus features a matte IPS display with a resolution of 2,560 x 1,600 pixels (16:10) and a refresh rate of 144 Hz. Subjective image quality is very good, and this is where the ExpertBook has an advantage over many competitors, which often offer Full HD panels at 60 Hz. There is no PWM flicker, and even bright content appears only minimally grainy—though this is hardly noticeable. This makes the panel very well-suited for work.
The maximum brightness averages ~425 cd/m², and the black level is low at 0.28 cd/m², resulting in a very good maximum contrast ratio of 1,500:1. In our analysis using the professional CalMAN software, the factory profile shows a slight blue cast combined with a color temperature that’s too cool. We can correct this issue with our own calibration (the profile is available for free download in the box above) and also improve the color deviations; only 100% blue continues to show a higher deviation. The sRGB color space is covered almost completely.

Performance - Ryzen AI 9 HX 470
Test Conditions
We ran the benchmarks in Performance mode, as this is the only way to achieve maximum CPU performance.
Processor Performance
The AMD Ryzen AI 9 HX 470 (Zen 5) consumes 52/48 watts, delivering high and consistent multi-core performance. When running on battery power, the CPU is limited to a maximum of 32/28 watts (Standard mode), so performance is about 20% lower in this scenario.

System and Storage Performance
Asus includes a PCIe 4.0 SSD (M.2-2280), which, in our test unit, is made by Western Digital and offers only 512 GB of storage (398 GB free). Performance is decent and consistent, which is why the system itself responds quickly. However, 16 GB of RAM can become a bottleneck relatively quickly when running complex apps or multiple applications simultaneously.

GPU and Gaming Performance
The Radeon 890M is actually a fast integrated GPU, but on the test unit, its performance is limited by the single-channel memory configuration. This is, of course, sufficient for everyday office use, but anyone who likes to play a few games after work should install an additional RAM module.

Emissions & Energy
Noise Emissions
The single fan is very quiet at idle but revs up quickly under load, especially in Performance mode. Here, the high TDP limit is problematic, and the noise level quickly reaches the maximum of ~48 dB(A)—which is quite loud for an office device. In Standard mode, the maximum is 39 dB(A), and in Whisper mode, the ExpertBook is barely audible at 29.1 dB(A), even during a stress test. The test unit produced no other electronic noise.

Temperature
Due to the single fan, the left side of the base unit heats up the most, and during the stress test in Performance mode, we measured a temperature of just under 48 °C at one point on the underside (rear, center); direct skin contact should therefore be avoided in this area. Otherwise, however, there are no issues with temperatures. During the stress test, the processor briefly runs at 48 watts and then stabilizes at 45 watts (~82 °C).
(±) The maximum temperature on the upper side is 42.7 °C / 109 F, compared to the average of 34.4 °C / 94 F, ranging from 21.2 to 62.5 °C for the class Office.
(-) The bottom heats up to a maximum of 47.8 °C / 118 F, compared to the average of 36.8 °C / 98 F
(+) In idle usage, the average temperature for the upper side is 24.1 °C / 75 F, compared to the device average of 29.5 °C / 85 F.
(±) 3: The average temperature for the upper side is 35.8 °C / 96 F, compared to the average of 29.5 °C / 85 F for the class Office.
(+) The palmrests and touchpad are reaching skin temperature as a maximum (34.4 °C / 93.9 F) and are therefore not hot.
(-) The average temperature of the palmrest area of similar devices was 27.6 °C / 81.7 F (-6.8 °C / -12.2 F).

Power Consumption and Battery Life
Power consumption measurements reveal no surprises; in idle mode, the device consumes between 4.3 and 10.7 watts, depending on brightness. Under load, we measured a maximum of 78 watts, so the included 90-watt power adapter is sufficiently rated. The 70-Wh battery delivers 10.5 to 12.5 hours of battery life in our Wi-Fi test (depending on brightness); only competitors with weaker displays last slightly longer here.
