The matte 144 Hz IPS display of the Asus ExpertBook PM5 G2 is perfect for work
The new Asus ExpertBook PM5 G2 is a large 16-inch business laptop with a powerful AMD processor (Ryzen AI 9 HX 470), but the highlight is the display. Many competitors are limited to Full-HD IPS panels with a frequency of 60 Hz, which do not offer a particularly good image quality. Some devices can be equipped with optional OLED panels, but they usually affect the battery runtime considerably and PWM flickering is also an issue. Good IPS panels with high resolutions and higher frequencies are very rare though.
Asus on the other hand follows another approach and we like it a lot, because the ExpertBook PM5 G2 is equipped with a high-resolution and matte IPS screen by default. You get 2560 x 1600 pixels and a frequency of 144 Hz, which enables smooth movemnets. The matte screen offers good image quality and even bright contents are just slightly grainy, but this is hardly noticeably in practice. The brightness is slightly above 400 nits and it could be a bit higher for outdoor usage scenarios in particular, but the black value is very low in return, which results in a very good maximum contrast ratio of 1500:1.
The panel only covers the small sRGB color gamut, but this is fine for a business device and the overall color accuracy is very good. The WQHD panel does not have a huge effect on the runtimes compared to OLED alternatives. In our Wi-Fi test at 150 nits, the ExpertBook with its 70 Wh battery manages around 12.5 hours, which is only around 1 hour less compared to the HP EliteBook 8 (77 Wh) or even around 3 hours less than the ThinkPad T16 Gen 5 (75 Wh) with the much weaker 1080p displays.
