HP releases new 16-inch laptop with 1,100-nit OLED and Intel Panther Lake

HP already sells several OmniBook 5 laptops built around AMD’s Gorgon Point or Krackan Point 2 and Intel’s Panther Lake platforms. As we have covered separately, most of these take the form of smaller 14-inch devices. Also, HP is now selling a 16-inch alternative utilising a range of Panther Lake processors, too.
Specifically, the company provides its new OmniBook 5 16-inch with the Core Ultra 7 355 or Core Ultra 9 386H. According to our benchmarks, a 25% CPU performance difference exists between the pair in the Core Ultra 9 386H's favour, despite being part of the same family. While the Core Ultra 9 386H contains an additional 8 Darkmont E-Cores, the two processors share identical iGPUs with 4 Xe3 cores.

Regardless, both processors are significantly more powerful than the Core Ultra 7 255U that we reviewed in last year's OmniBook 5 16-inch (curr. $745 on Amazon). Also, HP pairs the Core Ultra 9 386H with 32 GB of RAM. By contrast, the company limits Core Ultra 7 355 SKUs to just 16 GB of RAM. Both processors come with a 68 Wh battery though, and can be configured with 512 GB or 1 TB of PCIe Gen 5 storage.
On top of that, HP sells a choice of two Realtek modems; one with Bluetooth 5.4/Wi-Fi 6 connectivity and the other with Bluetooth 6.0/Wi-Fi 7 connectivity. Moreover, all units ship with an OLED display. By default, the new OmniBook 5 16-inch contains a 1,920 x 1,200-pixel panel with 300 nits peak brightness and a 60 Hz refresh rate. Although this panel does not support touch inputs, HP sells an otherwise identical touchscreen-enabled option for $70 more.
Alternatively, HP charges a further $60 for a 2,880 x 1,880-pixel option with a 120 Hz variable refresh rate, 500 nits SDR peak brightness and 1,100 nits peak HDR brightness. Pricing starts at $1,599 for a fully customisable model with a Core 7 355 processor, 16 GB of RAM and a 512 GB SSD. However, an identical configuration can actually be picked up for $1,399 as a pre-configured unit. Meanwhile, a fully configured unit reaches $2,489 when purchased from HP directly.
