Verdict: Lunar Lake in the ThinkPad T14 is a win
Intel has done it again with Lunar Lake. For an office laptop like the Lenovo ThinkPad T14 Gen 6, it is just the perfect platform: Very long battery life, low heat-output and fan noise as well as great everyday performance. Seeing Lunar Lake in the Lenovo ThinkPad T14 line was a surprise to be sure, but a very welcome one, as it is a bit cheaper than an X1 Carbon or T14s, making Lunar Lake more accessible for more people.
The only real drawback of this version is the lack of RAM upgradeability, which the other versions of the ThinkPad T14 G6 offer. If you want that, this T14 Gen 6 with Lunar Lake may not be the right choice. But for many users, this device delivers an excellent balance, making it a very nice workhorse.

When you think ThinkPad, chances are you think about a ThinkPad T series. The ThinkPad T series has been iconic and the quintessential ThinkPad laptop ever since its introduction in the year 2000. Over the years, the design and positioning of the series has changed: It used to be an all-round laptop with executive quality, more akin to what the ThinkPad X1 is now. Nowadays, machines like the 14-inch Lenovo ThinkPad T14 Gen 6 we are testing today, are more of a mid-range line, the bread and butter of the ThinkPad laptop lineup.
The ThinkPad T14 is one of the most typical office laptops for company fleets on the markets, and Lenovo offers it in a few different flavors. We are reviewing the Intel variant, and to be specific, the model with Intel Lunar Lake, also known as Intel Core Ultra 200V. Intel's most efficient CPU already shined in other business laptops - promising good things for this year's ThinkPad T14 G6.
Specifications: Core Ultra 7 258V and Low Power IPS screen
Case: Solid Lenovo ThinkPad T series chassis
Nothing has changed compared to the earlier Lenovo ThinkPad T14 Gen 5, at least on the outside. The Lenovo ThinkPad T14 Gen 6 does not stray far from the ThinkPad formula. The outer hull is made out of a composite plastic, which is reinforced in the area of the base unit with a magnesium frame. This makes for a construction that is both robust and not too expensive, while also being reasonably lightweight.
Except for the screen bezel, the chassis is covered with a rubberized coating, making the plastic nice to the touch, but also fingerprint prone. Overall, it is a classic design that may not turn heads, but it will probably keep the laptop working for many, many years, if past T series are an indication.
Two small hinges hold the screen, enabling up to 180 degrees as well as one-handed opening. The hinges with their black metal caps hold the screen without much wobble.
All 14-inch business laptops in our comparison are in the 1.4 to 1.5 kg range. The Lenovo ThinkPad T14 Gen 6 is slightly thicker than the competition from Dell and HP, but otherwise very comparable in size.
Connectivity: This ThinkPad T14 lacks upgradeable RAM
Lenovo keeps a well-rounded port selection, with two Thunderbolt 4 ports, HDMI and two USB-A ports, so users have both legacy ports and modern capabilities. In addition, an RJ45-Ethernet port will prove very useful for system admins and network engineers.
Communication
The Intel BE201 is a modern Wi-Fi 7 module that also offers Bluetooth 5.4. It delivers fast transfer rates, especially when receiving data.
Besides Wi-Fi and RJ45-Ethernet, the Lenovo ThinkPad laptop also offers optional 5G. Our model is not equipped with WWAN, but the necessary antennas, the nanoSIM slot and the open M.2 2242 slot are there, so you can upgrade it later.
Webcam
Lenovo puts in a 5.0 Mpix webcam. The image quality is certainly acceptable for video calls, but nothing special.

Security
As a business laptop, the Lenovo ThinkPad T14 G6 Intel has the standard array of security features, including dTPM, a bottom cover tamper detection, a Kensington lock slot and a mechanical privacy shutter for the webcam. In addition, Lenovo builds it with a Smartcard reader, an IR webcam for face recognition and a fingerprint sensor, all of which are for secure log-in.
Accessories
Apart from the 65 W USB-C charger, there are no additional accessories included with the Lenovo ThinkPad T14 Gen 6.
Maintenance
Removing the bottom cover is easy, the same is true for the keyboard. In the second case, you need to loosen two screws on the bottom, to remove the bottom, it's a total of seven screws. A few clips on the rear and sides have to be opened, too, with a plastic spudger being the tool of choice.
Once inside, there is less to do than on most other T series ThinkPads. The reason for that is of course the Lunar Lake platform of this specific model of the ThinkPad T14, which means the RAM is soldered on the CPU package. At least the SSD is upgradeable, as is WWAN, as there are an open M.2 2242 slot and antennas for 5G. Not as nice: Soldered USB-C ports and Wi-Fi. Better: the battery is easily replaceable, as it is not connected via a cable and the Philips head screws are captive, just like with the bottom cover.
Sustainability
One of the standout sustainability advances from the Lenovo ThinkPad line has been the 100 percent plastic free packaging. The materials of the laptop itself are not quite as sustainable, but at least, they are partially recycled. Lenovo publishes the CO2 emissions of the laptop's production (151 kg/CO2 equivalent). As usual with ThinkPads, replacement parts and repair manuals are available, both in written form and video, and Lenovo usually updates the firmware for many years.
Warranty
In the country of origin, Germany, Lenovo gives the ThinkPad T14 Gen 6 a three-year warranty. This warranty applies internationally as well, though that does not apply to add-on services, like on-site support. The only part that is under warranty for three years is the battery; the device has one year of battery warranty.
Input Devices: Same great ThinkPad keyboard as always
Keyboard
Do not mess with good: The keyboard of the Lenovo ThinkPad T14 Gen 6 remains unchanged. Rounded Chiclet keys with 1.5 mm travel offer a very comfortable typing experience, making typing long texts, like this review, enjoyable. The keyboard layout is one of the best of the market, with nicely spaced arrow keys and grouped F keys. In addition, the keyboard has a two stage white LED backlight, making typing in the dark comfortable.
Touchpad & TrackPoint
Mouse input is a mixed story: The touchpad of the ThinkPad is good, but the TrackPoint is excellent. Of course, most users will prefer the touchpad, which could be a bit bigger. Also, the haptic quality of the plastic surface is OK, but glass would be preferable. The touchpad is a mechanical clickpad, only the bottom area is clickable.
If you can use the TrackPoint, it is a great option. With the three dedicated mouse buttons above the touchpad, using the device is a breeze, if you know how to use the pointing stick.
Display: Low Power IPS screen is much brighter this year
For the Lenovo ThinkPad T14 Gen 6 Intel with Lunar Lake, Lenovo offers four matte WUXGA (1,920 x 1,200) IPS LCDs with a 14-inch size and 16:10 aspect ratio. An OLED screen is available, but not in combination with Lunar Lake - Lenovo only offers it on the Intel Arrow Lake configurations.

- Low Power screen: 500 cd/m², 100 % sRGB, low power consumption
- ePrivacy screen: 500 cd/m², 100 % sRGB, On-Cell Multitouch, ThinkPad Privacy Guard
Compared with the predecessor, the screen brightness is markedly improved, exceeding the promised 500 cd/m². None of the competitors delivers this screen brightness.

* ... smaller is better
Color reproduction is significantly improved after a calibration with the X-Rite i1Profiler and the i1basic Pro 3. The low Colorchecker deltaE of 0.9 means that the color accuracy is excellent. The profile we created is available in the gray box above for a free download.
Lenovo promises 100 percent sRGB for this specific panel, it reaches 98.3 percent. This should be enough for basic color work.

Performance: Intel Lunar Lake brings some gains
In total, Lenovo offers four different Lunar Lake CPUs in the ThinkPad T14 Gen 6 Intel: The Intel Core Ultra 5 228V, Ultra 5 238V, Ultra 7 258V and Ultra 7 268V. Accordingly, either the Intel ARC 130V or the ARC 140V serve as iGPUs.
As with all Lunar Lake systems, the RAM is soldered on package. Intel uses up to 32 GB of LPDDR5X-8533 memory - if you want upgradeable memory, you have to look at the Intel Arrow Lake or AMD version of the ThinkPad T14 Gen 6. There is a single M.2 2280 SSD with up to 2 TB.
Testing Conditions
As always, Lenovo uses the Windows settings for the power modes. There are three that regulate the power consumption of the CPU via the power limits (PL1 = power consumption under sustained load, PL2 = peak power consumption), All our benchmarks were performed in "Best Performance":
- Best battery life: PL1 10 W / PL2 37 W
- Balanced: PL1 14 W / PL2 37 W
- Best Performance: PL1 22.5 W / PL2 37 W
Processor
The Intel Core Ultra 7 258V is an Intel processor with eight cores (4x P cores, 4x E cores) that clock up to 4.8 GHz. Check out our CPU list for comparisons with other processors.
Overall, the CPU performance is improved over the older Meteor Lake model, though we see that improvement mainly when it comes to single core loads. Multicore performance is about the same as it was for the older ThinkPad T14 Gen 5, lacking behind even older AMD CPUs.
There was no throttling in battery mode.

Storage Devices
Lenovo uses a fast NVMe PCIe 5.0 SSD from Samsung in the Lenovo ThinkPad T14 Gen 6. The PM91E is an M.2 2280 drive that outperforms all the other SDDs in our comparison. However, there are some throttling issues under sustained load, so the good performance will not hold up forever.

GPU Performance
The major advantage of the Lunar Lake version of the Lenovo ThinkPad T14 Gen 6: The graphics performance is massively improved, thanks to the Intel ARC Graphics 140V. Even light gaming is a possibility with this model, although that certainly is not the priority with a business machine like the ThinkPad laptop.

Notebookcheck Rating
The same solid platform of the T series, but with the efficient Lunar Lake platform. A combination that works for us and for the Lenovo ThinkPad T14 Gen 6, which has little in terms of real weaknesses.
