Verdict: Strix Point does great in the Lenovo ThinkPad P14s Gen 6 AMD
Among this year's 14-inch ThinkPad laptops, the Lenovo ThinkPad P14s Gen 6 AMD stands out. It is the only model that is being offered with AMD Ryzen AI 9 HX Strix Point processors, like the AMD Ryzen AI 9 HX 370 in our review unit. The performance is great and far better than the Ryzen AI 7 available in other ThinkPad models. Luckily, this performance does not come at the cost of fan noise or extreme case temperatures, either.
Where the ThinkPad P14s G6 stumbles a bit is battery life, which is just mediocre. Also, our unit has some coil whine. Weird to us is the limitation of the Ryzen 9 unit in terms of the screen: The 2.8K OLED screen is only available on Ryzen 5 and Ryzen 7 models, a limitation by that seems unnatural. Overall, the ThinkPad P14s Gen 6 AMD is a strong compact mobile workstation, even though GPU performance would be significantly better if Lenovo were to offer an RTX Pro GPU - or AMD Strix Halo.

- Potential Competitors in Comparison
14-inch workstation laptops have been a part of Lenovo's ThinkPad lineup since 2019's Lenovo ThinkPad P43s. However, the small ThinkPad workstations were never particularly great, as they were simply rebranded versions of their T series counterparts with ISV certified GPU drivers.
Lenovo aims to change this state of affairs with the new Lenovo ThinkPad P14s Gen 6 AMD. This new Lenovo laptop is still based on the ThinkPad T series, but it offers a real benefit over the otherwise identical ThinkPad T14 Gen 6 AMD: Strix Point. Only the ThinkPad P14s Gen 6 AMD contains the AMD Ryzen AI 9 HX 370, the first and so far only ThinkPad with this powerful twelve core processor. This is the model that we are testing here.

Specifications: Ryzen AI 9 HX and low power WUXGA IPS screen
Case: ThinkPad P14s G6 AMD is a typical Lenovo ThinkPad
This workstation laptop is a ThinkPad through and through. The black boxy case is made out of reinforced plastic, with an internal magnesium structure frame inside. All surfaces, apart from the screen bezel, are covered with a rubbery coat of paint. The stability of the chassis is great, and it feels very robust, although designs with more metal chassis part have an edge in terms of stiffness. One disadvantage of the black, rubbery surfaces: They get dirty rather quickly. The surface feels nice on the skin, providing a high usability for the Lenovo ThinkPad.
A smooth opening with one hand, no wobbling and a 180-degree opening angle: The Lenovo ThinkPad P14s Gen 6 AMD provides all that, thanks to the two small black metal drop-down hinges.
Owing to its plastic build, the Lenovo ThinkPad P14s Gen 6 AMD is thicker and bigger than the aluminum-made HP ZBook Ultra - which however is also more expensive than the ThinkPad laptop.
Connectivity: Lenovo laptop with great upgradeability
Lenovo is a bit more conservative than HP in terms of the port selection when you compare the P14s G6 with the ZBook Ultra G1a. Lenovo includes one more USB-A, while HP has one more USB-C. Unfortunately, the ThinkPad can only be charged from the left side. On a positive note, the P14s Gen 6 AMD has a full-size RJ45 Ethernet port, a rarity nowadays.
Communication
Besides the wired Gigabit Ethernet connection, the Lenovo ThinkPad P14s Gen 6 AMD also offers modern Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 5.4. Transfer speeds are good, especially when downloading data.
5G/LTE is not an option on the model we tested, but both upgradeable and models pre-equipped with WWAN are optionally available. This is something HP does not offer on the ZBook Ultra, but it does on the HP ZBook Firefly.
Webcam
The 5.0 Mpix webcam is passable, but nothing more. For everyday usage in video calls, it is OK.

Security
Being based on the purebred business line of the ThinkPad T series, the Lenovo ThinkPad P14s Gen 6 AMD has the full suit of security features. This includes a physical webcam shutter for privacy, a Smartcard reader, Kensington lock as well as a dedicated TPM chip and Fingerprint reader.
Accessories
Apart from the 65 W USB-C charger, there are no additional accessories in the box.
Maintenance
In total, there are seven screws on the bottom of the ThinkPad P14s Gen 6 AMD that hold the bottom cover in place. In addition, several clips on the back of the ThinkPad laptop have to be loosened with a plastic pry tool.
Inside, users can upgrade the RAM as well as the SSD. The Wi-Fi is soldered and there is an open M.2 2242 slot, but since there are no antennas and no SIM slot, a WWAN card can not be added. The battery is user-replaceable too, and its screws can not get lost, same for the screws of the bottom cover - they are captive.
In addition, the keyboard is user-replaceable. Two of the screws on the bottom hold it in place. After they are loosened, the keyboard can be slit back and swiftly removed.
Sustainability
Lenovo does a lot for sustainability: The packaging of the ThinkPad laptop is plastic free and Lenovo also uses recycled materials for some parts, like the keyboard keys. The CO2 output from the production of this model sits at 179 kg/CO2 equivalent, and the device has several sustainability certifications, like EPEAT Gold. Since it is a ThinkPad, Lenovo provides repair manuals in both video and text, as well as replacement parts and driver/firmware updates for many years.
Warranty
Lenovo gives the ThinkPad P14s Gen 6 AMD 36 months of warranty. For the first year, it is an on-site Premier support warranty in the country of origin, Germany. Afterward, it becomes a bring-in warranty. As this is a business model, the warranty applies internationally as well.
Input Devices: ThinkPad keyboard as comfy as ever
Keyboard
The full-size keyboard of the Lenovo ThinkPad P14s Gen 6 AMD is excellent. It is a 1.5 mm travel keyboard with a two-stage white LED-backlight. Providing a great typing experience, typing long texts on this keyboard is a breeze. The layout is very good, too, with dedicated nav keys, grouped F keys and bigger arrow keys than most other laptops.
Touchpad
Lenovo does not change its tried and true mouse-pointing solution, which includes both a touchpad and a red TrackPoint pointing stick with three dedicated buttons. The TrackPoint has its strengths when it comes to precise movement, especially when using the laptop in close-quarters or with gloves, as well as minimizing the hand movement to move the pointer while typing. Its middle button can be used for scrolling or the classic middle click function.
The touchpad, which is made out of plastic and measures 11,5 x 6 cm, is a clickpad that can be pressed down in the lower half. The mechanical click is rather loud on our unit, but the overall experience is good, even though a glass surface would be better.
Display: 2.8K OLED screen is kept away from the Ryzen 9 model
There are five screen options in total for the Lenovo ThinkPad P14s Gen 6 AMD. All of them have the 14-inch size and 16:10 aspect ratio:
- WUXGA (1,920 x 1,200), IPS, 400 cd/m², 45 % NTSC, matte
- WUXGA (1,920 x 1,200), IPS, 400 cd/m², 45 % NTSC, matte, On-Cell Touch
- WUXGA (1,920 x 1,200), IPS, 500 cd/m², 100 % sRGB, matte, Low Power
- WUXGA (1,920 x 1,200), IPS, 500 cd/m², 100 % sRGB, matte, On-Cell Touch, Privacy Guard
- 2.8K (2,880 x 1,800), OLED, 500 cd/m², 100 % DCI-P3, semi-matte/semi-glossy, HDR
Strangely, Lenovo keeps the OLED screen to the models with Ryzen AI 5 and Ryzen AI 7 only, so the Ryzen 9 HX version is limited to a WUXGA resolution.
The WUXGA screen in our model is much brighter than the equivalent screen in last year's ThinkPad P14s Gen 5, with an average brightness of 545 cd/m². As usual with the Low power WUXGA screens, it is a rather slow panel.

* ... smaller is better
Ex factory, the panel is a bit too cool. We were able to correct this with a calibration with the X-Rite i1Pro 3 and the X-Rite i1Profiler. After the calibration, we measured an excellent Colorchecker deltaE of 0.7, which indicates mostly correct colors. The profile we created is available to download for free in the gray box above, as always.
Lenovo claims 100 percent coverage of the sRGB color gamut, we can confirm that claim. This panel is therefore usable for simple photo editing.

Performance: AMD Ryzen AI 9 HX brings the heat without getting hot
Three AMD CPUs and the iGPUs are available in the Lenovo ThinkPad P14s G6 AMD, being paired up. This includes the Ryzen AI 5 Pro 340 with the Radeon 840M, Ryzen AI 7 Pro 350 with the Radeon 860M and the Ryzen AI 9 HX Pro 370 with the Radeon 890M.
Lenovo offers the ThinkPad laptop with up to 96 GB DDR5-5600 memory (2x 48 GB SO-DIMM) and 2 TB NVMe PCIe 4.0 SSDs.
Testing Conditions
Lenovo uses three distinct power profiles, which all influence the power consumption of the AMD processor and thus its performance with the power limits (PL1 = sustained power consumption, PL2 = maximum consumption):
- Best battery life: PL1 20 W / PL2 27 W
- Balanced: PL1 32 W / PL2 40 W
- Best performance: PL1 36 W / 51 W
We used the "Best performance" profile for our benchmarks.
Processor
The AMD Ryzen AI 9 HX Pro 370 is a twelve core chip and the lowest-ranged HX-chip in AMD's current Strix Point lineup. There are four bigger Zen5 cores (up to 5.1 GHz) and eight smaller Zen5c cores (up to 3.3 GHz), the CPU has a TDP (thermal design power) range of 28 to 54 W. Our CPU comparison table can be used to compare it with other processors.
The performance of the HX processor is impressive, considering that the cooling is handled by a single fan and unchanged compared with the previous Lenovo ThinkPad P14s Gen 5 AMD. On average, there is a 13 percent performance uplift as well as a 10 percent uplift compared to the Meteor Lake based ThinkPad P14s Gen 5 Intel - which has a different cooling system with two fans and thus higher power limits. Of course, HP's ZBook Ultra G1a with Strix Halo is far beyond the reach of the P14s Gen 6. On average, the Ryzen AI Max CPU is roughly 25 percent faster.
CPU performance is not at all throttled in battery mode.

GPU Performance
Graphics performance is not the strongest suite of the Lenovo ThinkPad P14s Gen 6 AMD. While there is still a considerable performance uptick with the AMD Radeon 890M compared to the earlier Radeon 780M (plus 11 percent in the 3DMark benchmarks, plus 9 percent in the SPECviewperf suite), it still lags behind the old Nvidia RTX 500 Ada of last year's ThinkPad P14s Gen 5 Intel. The AMD Radeon RX 8060S of Strix Halo and the HP ZBook Ultra is far out of reach. Basic modern games are possible in lower settings and CAD is also enabled by the Radeon GPU, but users should not expect wonders of this iGPU.
