HP ZBook Firefly 14 G10 A in review: Strong office notebook that relies on Zen 4
In 2023, the Firefly 14 offers a range of configurations to choose from. Intel enthusiasts can opt for a processor from the Raptor Lake series, while AMD versions are equipped with a Zen 4 chip. Alongside the Ryzen 7 7840HS, HP also offers the Ryzen 5 Pro 7640HS, which powers the model we reviewed. Instead of the Radeon 780M, the laptop features the Radeon 760M as the iGPU, but the latter still offers a respectable performance compared to the Intel iGPUs. The present 5G3G5ES#ABD model, was priced at around $1260 to $1360 USD during our evaluation. This variant comes with 16 GB of DDR5-5600 RAM and a 512 GB NVMe SSD and features a matte IPS panel with a 16:10 aspect ratio and a resolution of 1920 x 1200 pixels. The display is designed to achieve 400 cd/m² brightness and covers 100% of the sRGB color space (more details on this shortly). Windows 11 Pro version completes the package.

Details here
The Firefly 14 faces competition from other office notebooks featuring current AMD CPUs like the Lenovo LOQ 15APH8 and the HP EliteBook 845 G10, as well as devices powered by Intel CPUs such as the Lenovo Yoga 9 14IRP G8 and the Huawei MateBook X Pro. These devices are included in our comparison tables for reference.

As the case appears to be identical to the Firefly 14 G9 tested in 2022, except for the changed logo on the lid (now HP instead of Z), we will not delve into the casing, equipment (ports, etc.), and input devices in this article. You can refer to the linked article for detailed information on these aspects.

Display
There have been no changes in the display department. HP continues to use the same IPS panel (CMN1435) as in the predecessor model. Any slight deviations in the rates compared to the last test are partly attributed to the typical series variation.

Our review sample fell slightly short of the advertised brightness at 400 cd/m², measuring an average of 367 cd/m². While this is a solid, though not exceptional value, some competitors such as the EliteBook 845 G10 and Huawei's MateBook X Pro achieve significantly higher brightness levels. However, thanks to the acceptable black value of 0.25 cd/m², the contrast ratio remains respectable at 1,588:1, which is quite decent for an IPS panel.
The response time, on the other hand, falls noticeably behind the competition, with 25 ms for black-to-white transitions and 56 ms for gray-to-gray changes, making it quite modest even for an office notebook. Despite this, most buyers should find the color space satisfactory. While the Firefly 14 doesn't fully cover DCI-P3 and AdobeRGB (unlike some competitors), its approximately 98% sRGB coverage is respectable. Moreover, the colors are already pretty natural as given, making calibration unnecessary.
The viewing angles are based on the usual IPS level, ensuring relatively good visibility even from slanted positions.

Performance
As long as you don't intend to run demanding 3D applications, the Firefly 14 should have sufficient resources to last for the coming years with its current hardware configuration. The only drawback is the somewhat limited storage capacity of 512 GB. If needed, a larger M.2 model could be installed to address this issue.
Processor
As mentioned earlier, the Ryzen 5 Pro 7640HS is a recent addition to the Zen 4 family, boasting 6 cores that can handle up to 12 threads simultaneously thanks to SMT. Operating at a clock speed ranging from 4.3 to 5 GHz under load, offering impressive performance. Additionally, the processor features a substantial 16 MB L3 cache, enhancing its capabilities further.
The Ryzen 5 Pro demonstrates strong performance in benchmarks. While the 7640HS (Non-Pro) in Lenovo's LOQ calculates slightly faster, it doesn't quite match the performance level of the Ryzen 9 Pro 7940HS found in the HP EliteBook 845. One of Intel's main rivals, the Core i7-1360P, lags behind in the Cinebench loop due to a more consistent performance development.

Storage Devices
Despite the system performance being at the top, the mass storage device ranks last in the test field. The 512 GB Samsung drive (PM9B1) is not slow by any means, but it still falls short when compared to the faster NVMe drives offered by the competition. At least the speed remains constant even under permanent load.

Graphics card
One of the biggest highlights of the Firefly 14 is the relatively fast iGPU. Despite having 512 shader units compared to the 768 in the Radeon 780M, the Radeon 760M outperforms the Intel counterpart, Iris Xe Graphics G7, in most scenarios. This is largely due to AMD's superior graphics drivers, particularly in terms of gaming support. In 3DMarks, the Firefly 14's performance aligns with the Lenovo LOQ, which is also equipped with a Radeon 760M.

Gaming Performance
If we overlook the absence of a current GPU driver from HP during the testing period (the official AMD driver didn't work with the Firefly 14), and the resulting problems in certain games (such as Star Wars Jedi Survivor and Armored Core 6, both of which crashed at startup), the Radeon 760M proves to be suitable for gaming older or less demanding titles. As shown in the table below, the iGPU can handle high to maximum details in optimal scenarios. However, users often have to compromise by selecting lower settings, provided they deliver a reasonably smooth performance in Full HD.
