Verdict - Good business laptop with quality issues
The new HP EliteBook 8 G2a 14 is a good 14-inch business laptop with good connectivity options, decent performance, a great keyboard and a good low power IPS screen that ensures excellent battery runtimes. You also get 5G connectivity, but the aluminum chassis is pretty heavy at more than 1.5 kg and the base unit reveals some quality issues with concerning creaking sounds when you twist it, which should not happen in this price range. The stability of the base unit is not ideal, either, because it bends quite easily.
Overall system performance is good and the overall fan noise is very quiet, even though the fans sometimes tend to pulsate a bit, which can be annoying. You get excellent speakers, a good camera and useful software solutions for your web meetings or security aspects, so there are no worries here. The standard warranty of just one year is a bit meager for an expensive business device and the memory of our unit is soldered, even though 32 GB should be more than enough for most office tasks. Some SKUs are also shipped with two SO-DIMM slots.
The matte Full-HD panel is a good panel for productive tasks and it is very efficient, but the frequency of 60 Hz is not ideal. If you want a better screen, you can also get the optional 2.5K IPS panel with 120 Hz, but it will certainly affect the battery runtimes.

Specifications
Case, Connectivity and Input Devices
The EliteBook 8 G2a 14 uses a silver aluminum chassis that looks good and does not attract fingerprints, but it is also quite thick and heavy (1.54 kg) for a modern 14-inch device. The base unit is stable when you apply pressure, but there are concerning creaking noises when you twist it and it also bends visibly, which should not happen on a premium product. The lid performs better and the hinges leave a better impression as well, but the maximum opening angle is limited to ~160 degrees.
The keyboard (1.5 mm travel) is excellent to type on and we actually slightly prefer it over the current ThinkPad T models, but this might vary based on your preferences. The clickpad offers good gliding capabilities and works very well, but the mechanical clicks are a bit on the loud side. Maintenance options are good and some models offer two SO-DIMM slots for RAM in addition to the SSD slot, but our unit uses soldered memory. You can also replace the Wi-Fi module and install a 5G modem.
Connectivity is very good with two Thunderbolt 4 ports, HDMI and a regular USB-A port. There is also an additional USB-C port on the right side, so you can charge the laptop on both sides. The Wi-Fi 7 module offers good and stable transfer rates, but they are capped at ~2 Gbps because the module only supports 160 MHz instead of 320 MHz. The 5 MP webcam (with shutter) takes decent images and the Poly camera software adds useful features like displaying business cards or virtual backgrounds independent of the meeting software.

Display - Matte IPS with 100 % sRGB
Our review unit is equipped with the matte Full-HD IPS-screen (1920 x 1200 pixels, LowPower, 60 Hz) and the overall image quality is good. Even bright contents do not appear very grainy and there is no PWM flickering. HP also offers other display options including a 2.5K IPS screen with 120 Hz and P3 gamut or a Full-HD OLED panel.
The average brightness is around 430 nits and together with the low black value of 0.22 cd/m², the maximum contrast ratio is excellent at ~2000:1. Our analysis with the professional CalMAN software shows a slight blue cast out of the box, but our own calibration (profile can be downloaded for free in the box below) fixes that and reduces both the grayscale as well as the colors. In combination with full sRGB color gamut, it is no problem to edit pictures/videos.

Performance
The EliteBook 8 G2a 14 is equipped with AMD Ryzen processors and the Ryzen AI 7 450 (or the PRO version) is the fastest option. Contrary to the spec sheet, however, the RAM is soldered and cannot be upgraded.
Testing Conditions
We performed our benchmarks in the Balanced power mode, because the power limits and the performance are identical to the Best Performance mode, but with quieter fan noise.
Processor Performance
The AMD Ryzen AI 7 450 features eight cores (16 threads) and can consume up to 58 Watts, which quickly settles at 41 Watts. The multi-core performance is very stable and the overall performance is on the expected level. The Core Ultra 5 325 (Panther Lake) is about 20 % slower on average. The CPU performance on battery power is about 12 % lower.

System and Storage Devices
The EliteBook 8 is a snappy system and we did not experience any stability issues. 32 GB RAM should be completely fine for the vast majority of business-related tasks and the PCIe 4.0 SSD from Western Digital with 1 TB storage (829 GB free) manages good transfer rates even under sustained workloads.

GPU and Gaming Performance
The Ryzen AI 7 450 is equipped with the familiar Radeon 860M and the GPU performance is better compared to the new Intel Panther Lake iGPU with 4 Xe cores. It is sufficient for a business laptop and can handle regular office tasks, but the gaming capabilities are obviously limited. If you want to play some games, you are limited to older titles and/or lower resolutons and graphics settings.

System Noise
The cooling unit uses two fans and while the EliteBook is a very quiet system in general, we noticed that the fan speed occasionally pulsates, which can be a bit annoying. Under light workloads, you can usually only hear a slight murmur and when you really stress the system, you can expect between 35-38 dB(A), which is audible, but not distracting. We did not hear any other electronic noises from our unit.

Temperature
The left side of the device warms up more under load but surface temperatures are no problem even during our stress test, so you can use the EliteBook on your lap and type without any limitations. During the stress test with combined CPU/GPU workload, the SoC runs at 41 Watts for a few minutes and eventually levels off at ~32 Watts (65 °C).
(±) The maximum temperature on the upper side is 41.1 °C / 106 F, compared to the average of 34.4 °C / 94 F, ranging from 21.2 to 62.5 °C for the class Office.
(±) The bottom heats up to a maximum of 44.2 °C / 112 F, compared to the average of 36.8 °C / 98 F
(+) In idle usage, the average temperature for the upper side is 26.2 °C / 79 F, compared to the device average of 29.5 °C / 85 F.
(±) 3: The average temperature for the upper side is 34.4 °C / 94 F, compared to the average of 29.5 °C / 85 F for the class Office.
(+) The palmrests and touchpad are cooler than skin temperature with a maximum of 30.2 °C / 86.4 F and are therefore cool to the touch.
(-) The average temperature of the palmrest area of similar devices was 27.6 °C / 81.7 F (-2.6 °C / -4.7 F).

Power Consumption and Battery Life
Our consumption measurements do not reveal any surprises and the very compact 65W PSU is sufficient. Our battery tests clearly show the advantage of the LowPower IPS display, because our Wi-Fi test at 150 nits runs for almost 20 hours and you still get almost 15 hours at maximum brightness. These are excellent results and beat all the rivals.
