Verdict: A great workhorse for some tasks
As a mobile workstation laptop, the HP ZBook 8 G2a 14 should be more powerful than most other laptops. It does offer a powerful processor, and a lot of RAM, 64 GB in the case of our review unit, but the Radeon iGPU is nothing special. Overall, this means that this is a workstation that is not well-suited for tasks like CAD, but it is for CPU-intensive tasks - and AI, especially agentic AI, which profits from a strong CPU and lots of RAM.
In other regards, the HP laptop is a device without obvious weaknesses. The ZBook makes for a great workhorse laptop, thanks to its comfortable keyboard, flexible port selection and good screen. Surprisingly, it also offers great battery life, despite a slightly smaller battery than earlier versions of the ZBook 8. Plus, as an enterprise model, you get a long warranty, with better service than consumer devices, as well as additional security features. If you have the budget, the HP ZBook 8 G2a 14 is a great choice for a work laptop - though only if you do not need a lot of GPU power.

Specifications
Case, Connectivity and Input Devices
As the lower-end ZBook series, the HP ZBook 8 G2a 14 is based on the design of the EliteBook 8 series. The entire chassis consists of grey Aluminum, with the exception of the plastic screen bezel and plastic insert into the lid for the Wi-Fi antennas. The base part of the chassis does not have much flex to it, though the screen can be bent a bit more.
It is a well-made chassis, with a single wide bar hinge. The hinge allows for an opening angle of 166 degrees, so not quite full-flat. There is no wobble and the screen can be opened with one hand. The mobile workstation from HP weighs around 1.5 kg, which is less than many of the other 14-inch class workstations, but slightly more than the Lenovo ThinkPad P14s Gen 6 AMD. Size-wise, the HP laptop and the ThinkPad are very similar, though the ZBook is around 2 mm thinner.
The port selection has not changed compared with the ZBook 8 G1a. Internally, this HP mobile workstation is pretty upgradeable - SSD, two RAM modules, Wi-Fi card, take your pick. There is no 5G module and the device is not 5G upgradable, as it lacks antennas and a SIM slot, but there are other model variants of the HP laptop with 5G. The keyboard is a bit harder to reach, but it is a separate part from the palmrest.
HP uses the same keyboard as with the previous generation. It is excellent, a full-size Chiclet keyboard with six rows, 1.5 mm key-travel and a two-stage backlight. Typing with the HP ZBook 8 G2a 14 is a pleasure. And the glass touchpad (measuring 8 x 12.5 cm), which is a classic mechanical clickpad, is likewise very good,

Display
HP offers a total of six different 14-inch 16:10 screen options, all of which are matte IPS screens:
- WUXGA (1,920 x 1,200), 300 cd/m², 62.5 % sRGB
- WUXGA (1,920 x 1,200), 300 cd/m², 62.5 % sRGB, multi-touch
- WUXGA (1,920 x 1,200), 400 cd/m², 100 % sRGB
- WUXGA (1,920 x 1,200), 800 cd/m², 100 % sRGB, multi-touch, SureView
- WQXGA/2.5K (2,560 x 1,600), 400 cd/m², 120 Hz VRR, 100 % AdobeRGB/DCI P3
- WQXGA/2.5K (2,560 x 1,600), 500 cd/m², 120 Hz VRR, HP Dreamcolor
Like the earlier ZBook 8 G1i 14, our review unit of the HP ZBook 8 G2a 14 uses a panel made by LG, which delivers almost 100 percent of the sRGB, AdobeRGB and DCI P3 gamuts. It is a good panel, but it could be a bit brighter. 400 cd/m² is adequate, however, the ThinkPad P14s Gen 6 Intel achieves around 500 cd/m². The panel has flickering, but with a high frequency, and with 120 Hz refresh rate, it also displays movements pretty smooth, though not as smooth as an OLED display.

Storage Devices
HP uses a Kioxia SSD with a capacity of 1 TB. It is an M.2 2280 NVMe PCIe 4.0 drive that performs well in our testing, beating all the other 14-inch workstations in the comparison. The SSD does not throttle its performance under sustained load.

GPU and Gaming Performance
Graphics performance is normally one of the strong suits of mobile workstations, but that is not the case with the HP ZBook 8 G2a 14. It only has the integrated AMD graphics, the AMD Radeon 890M. Even compared to basic Nvidia dGPUs, this iGPU without dedicated VRAM can not compete. The same is true for the powerful AMD Radeon 8050S in the ZBook Ultra. The ZBook 8 G2a 14 is more suited for CPU intensive or AI applications that rely more on RAM than GPU power.

Power Consumption and Battery Life
HP puts a 100 W charger in the box, which is more than enough to supply the mobile workstation with power. While the charger-size is generous, the battery is a bit smaller than before, with 68 Wh instead of 77 Wh like in the HP ZBook 8 G1i. It does not really matter, though: The ZBook still scores an excellent 16 hrs in our Wi-Fi/websurfing test (150 cd/m² screen brightness) - better than all the other 14-inch workstation competitors.
