Verdict: HP ZBook Ultra is great with the Ryzen AI Max 390
Unique: The HP ZBook Ultra G1a 14 is a mobile workstation laptop unlike any other. It is the first truly great 14-inch workstation, since it offers a powerful yet efficient AMD Strix Halo GPU that packs a lot of performance into a compact chassis. And the HP laptop is great in most other aspects, too.
One weakness of the concept is the soldered RAM - 32 GB are not enough for this powerful iGPU. We would recommend staying away from low-end configurations of the ZBook, the concept only makes sense 64 GB and up. Also, a brighter screen would be nice, as both screen options top out at 400 cd/m².

HP's ZBook Ultra G1a is a special device. It is the first HP ZBook with a 14-inch screen that is a true flagship-type model, and it features a special CPU platform called AMD Ryzen AI Max aka Strix Halo - one of the few laptops on the market with this fascinating chip that combines powerful Zen5 cores with a beefy iGPU and unified memory. We already tested the high-end version of the ZBook Ultra 14. Now, we are taking a look at a lower-end configuration.
Specifications: WUXGA screen and Ryzen AI Max Pro 390
Case: HP uses a high-quality metal casing
In general, this unit uses the same chassis as the more expensive model. The ZBook Ultra G1a has a compact Aluminum case with very minimal screen bezels, which feels very robust and premium to the touch. The main difference to the model we already tested: The screen bezel is plastic on our WUXGA model, while the OLED variant has a glass panel in front of the screen.
Connectivity: USB-C on both sides for charging

Input Devices: A strong suite of HP's business laptops
In terms of the typing quality, HP delivers an excellent experience, as the gray backlight keys offers a very nice typing feel. The key travel is plenty with roughly 1.5 mm and the feeling of the key-presses is firm, yet still soft.
It is slightly surprising that the US manufacturer sticks to a mechanical clickpad in the HP ZBook Ultra G1a 14, as you would expect a haptic solution in such an expensive model. At least it is glass-made and big (12.5 x 8 cm), making for a good mousing experience.
Display: WUXGA screen could be brighter
Our review unit of the HP ZBook Ultra G1a 14 contains a matte 14-inch WUXGA IPS (1,920 x 1,200) screen in the 16:10 aspect-ratio, as opposed to the 2.8K (2,880 x 1,800) OLED screen we tested before.
When compared with other workstation and creator type laptops, it becomes apparent that the ZBook Ultra has the most limited screen brightness of the pack, no matter if it is the OLED or IPS version. An average of 379 cd/m² is by no means bad, but certainly far from bright for today's standards.
One advantage of the IPS version of the ZBook: it does not use PWM, different from the OLED model. On the flip side, the OLED screen is miles faster, also aided by the higher refresh rate of up to 120 Hz.

Processor
The AMD Ryzen AI Max Pro 390 is a member of the current AMD Ryzen AI Max lineup, also known under its codename "Strix Halo". This CPU sports twelve Zen5 cores that reach clock-rates of 3.2 to 5 GHz. The typical TDP of this CPU sits at 55 W. As a Pro CPU, it has certain enterprise manageability features important for large corporate customers. For more in-depth comparisons with other processors, refer to our CPU benchmark list.
As expected, the performance ranks below the Ryzen AI Max+ 395 version of the HP ZBook Ultra G1a we tested before. Still, it is more than respectable, as it easily beats older Meteor Lake H models like the Dell Precision 5490 or the Lenovo ThinkPad P14s Gen 6 AMD.
In battery mode, CPU performance is throttled by about 25 percent (19868 points in Cinebench R23 Multicore).

HP uses a fast NVMe PCIe 4.0 SSD made by SK Hynix in the HP ZBook Ultra G1a. The 1 TB drive performed well, displaying no problems with thermal throttling either.

GPU Performance
This ZBook Ultra model uses the lesser AMD Radeon RX 8050S. It has 32 CUs. As an iGPU, the performance is partially dependent on the system memory, as there is no dedicated VRAM. HP allows users to set the amount of VRAM freely in the BIOS - per default, it is set to 8 GB.
Graphics performance of the HP ZBook Ultra G1a 14 is great. It even manages to outperform the old Nvidia RTX 3000 Ada of the Dell Precision 5490 in the 3DMark benchmarks.

Gaming Performance
Although not made for gaming, the ZBook can certainly be used to play some games. However, with some newer titles, we had problems, as the games would not start due to insufficient VRAM.

System Noise
HP keeps the two fans off when the laptop is idling. Under load, the fan noise ramps up quickly. However, on this unit, the fan noise is less pronounced than on the Ryzen AI Max+ 395 model.
We did not detect any coil whine with this HP laptop.
