Medion Erazer Beast X40 (2024) Review: High-end gaming laptop with RTX 4090 and mechanical keyboard
The Medion Beast X40 is one of the most powerful laptops currently available. Intel Raptor Lake, Nvidia Ada Lovelace, 2 TB storage space, and 32 GB RAM all add up nicely to equip the laptop for streaming, rendering and gaming while costing a bomb at around €4,000.
As was the case with its predecessor, a Tongfang barebone (GM7IX9N) chassis serves as the basis for the Beast X40's construction. The competition includes gaming laptops such as the Asus ROG Strix Scar 17 G733PYV, the Schenker Key 17 Pro (Early 23), and the MSI Titan 18 HX A14VIG.

Chassis and features: The Beast X40 offers Thunderbolt 4
The technology of the Beast X40 is housed in a sturdy, elegantly designed, matte black metal housing with smooth surfaces. The base unit is covered with a non-slip rubber coating. Two RGB LED strips above the rear air outlets, the illuminated lid logo, and the RGB key illumination add a splash of color. The battery (screwed, not glued) and the other internal components are accessible after removing the bottom panel.
The Erazer sports three USB-A ports (2x USB 3.2 Gen 1 and 1x USB 3.2 Gen 2) and one USB Type-C port in the form of Thunderbolt 4. We could confirm that latter can output a DisplayPort signal and supports Power Delivery. In total, the laptop has two video outputs (HDMI 2.1 and DisplayPort).
We tested the SD memory card reader with our reference AV Pro SD microSD 128 GB V60 card and found it to offer above average read speeds. The 1080p webcam comes as a standard fare.
The Erazer Beast X40 uses an Intel Wi-Fi 6E AX211 chip while wired connections are handled by a Realtek RTL8125 2.5 GbE controller. The laptop offers solid Wi-Fi performance in our testing using the Asus ROG Rapture GT-AXE11000 reference router with no other Wi-Fi devices in the immediate vicinity and at a short distance between the laptop and the server PC.

Input devices: Mechanical keyboard with Cherry MX switches
The Beast X40's mechanical keyboard scores points with its rich typing feel and precise inputs. Its Cherry MX switches offer a medium stroke and a clearly audible and perceptible pressure point. A number pad and individual RGB key illumination round off the overall harmonious keyboard.
The multi-touch touchpad (15.5 x 10 cm) has a short stroke and a clear pressure point. It can be deactivated completely or only on one side (right).
Display: QHD+ with decent sRGB coverage
The 2024 Beast X40 uses the same matte QHD+ 240 Hz display (2,560 x 1,600 pixels) developed by BOE similar to the 2023 Beast X40. The panel has good brightness levels, short response times, high frame rates, and does not exhibit PWM flickering.
Medion currently does not offer other display options to choose from.

The display shows good color representation ex works: With a deviation of around 1.4, the target (DeltaE < 3) is met. Calibration reduces the deviation to 0.7 and ensures more balanced grayscales.
The panel can reproduce the sRGB color space completely, but not the AdobeRGB and DCI P3 color spaces. Competitors' displays offer more here.

The screen shows very fast response rates in our tests and should be very well suited for fast-paced gaming. In comparison, all tested devices range from 0.1 (minimum) to 240 (maximum) ms. » 17 % of all devices are better. This means that the measured response time is better than the average of all tested devices (20.9 ms). | ||

The screen shows good response rates in our tests, but may be too slow for competitive gamers. In comparison, all tested devices range from 0.165 (minimum) to 636 (maximum) ms. » 22 % of all devices are better. This means that the measured response time is better than the average of all tested devices (32.8 ms). |

In comparison: 53 % of all tested devices do not use PWM to dim the display. If PWM was detected, an average of 8705 (minimum: 5 - maximum: 343500) Hz was measured. |
The viewing angle-stable IPS panel can be read from any position. It is possible to read the display outdoors if the sun is not too bright.
Performance: Medion Beast X40 comes with high-end hardware
Medion's high-end notebook cuts a fine figure in all performance-hungry application areas (e.g. gaming, rendering). The necessary computing power is provided by Raptor Lake and Ada Lovelace. This X40 model is available for around 4,000 euros. Cheaper versions are available from as little as 2,500 euros. As an optional accessory, Medion offers a water cooling system (approx. 200 euros), which can result in a small increase in performance and lower emissions.
Test conditions
A dedicated key next to the power button allows you to quickly switch between the three manufacturer-specific performance modes (see table below). The "Balance Mode" (benchmarks) and "Silent Mode" (battery tests) modes were used.
Individual profiles can be created using the pre-installed Control Center software wherein the power limits of the CPU, the TGP of the GPU, and/or the upper temperature limits can be adjusted.
Gaming Mode | Balance Mode | Silent Mode | |
---|---|---|---|
Power Limit 1 (HWInfo) | 160 watts | 160 watts | 160 watts |
Power Limit 2 (HWInfo) | 160 Watt | 160 Watt | 160 Watt |
Noise (Witcher 3) | 52 dB(A) | 50 dB(A) | 34 dB(A) |
Performance (Witcher 3) | ~214 fps | ~204 fps | 30 fps (locked) |
Processor
The 24 CPU cores (8P + 16E and 32 threads) of the Raptor Lake-HX Core i9-14900HX achieve maximum clock speeds of 5.8 GHz (P-core) and 4.1 GHz (E-core). Thanks to slightly higher clock rates, the CPU delivers a bit more performance than the CPU in the 2023 Beast X40 predecessor with a Core i9-13900HX.
Continuous multi-thread load (CB15 loop) is acknowledged with a constant clock rate — the level depends on the power mode. "Balance Mode" delivers benchmark values below the CPU average, "Gaming Mode" raises them above it. The single-thread performance is different: it is at a high, almost identical level in all three profiles.
More information on the Core i9-14900HX can be found in our analysis article.

DPC latency
Latency Monitor reveals anomalies during the latency test (web surfing, 4k video playback, and Prime95 high-load). The system does not appear to be suitable for video and audio editing in real time. Future software and drivers updates could lead to potential improvements or even deteriorations.

Mass storage
The X40 has two PCIe Gen 4 M.2 2280 SSDs of 1 TB each on board, but they are not configured in a RAID array. One SSD serves as a system drive and the other as data storage. Very good data rates are achieved. There are no performance drops due to thermal throttling.
The X40 generally supports RAID-0/1, but the corresponding option would first have to be activated in the BIOS after which Windows needs be reinstalled. This procedure is not recommended for the uninitiated.
