Verdict - Maximum gaming performance with few shortcomings
The Asus ROG Strix SCAR 18 G835LXG is one of the most powerful gaming laptops currently on the market. Equipped with the Intel Core Ultra 9 290HX, the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5090 Laptop with a 175-watt TGP, and 128 GB of RAM, the test unit offers enormous performance reserves for the latest AAA games, professional content creation, and demanding AI workloads. CPU and GPU performance remain stable even under sustained load.
The 18-inch Mini-LED display with 4K resolution, 2,000 dimming zones, and a 240 Hz refresh rate is one of the laptop’s greatest strengths. It impresses with high sharpness, excellent HDR capabilities, and a high maximum brightness. The only limitations are in the out-of-the-box color calibration, which can, however, be significantly improved through calibration. Additionally, the 240 Hz refresh rate is available exclusively in GPU Ultimate Mode—in all other graphics modes, 120 Hz is still possible.
The case also gives the impression of high quality. The extensive RGB lighting, including AniME Vision, as well as the ease of maintenance, underscore its premium appeal. Less impressive are the base unit’s delicate plastic surface, which quickly picks up fingerprints, and the cooling system, which is clearly audible under load. Added to this are the high power consumption and battery life that is merely average for this performance class.
If you’re looking for an uncompromising desktop replacement with maximum gaming and application performance, the Asus ROG Strix SCAR 18 G835LXG is one of the most powerful 18-inch gaming laptops currently available. However, this comes at the cost of a very high purchase price as well as high noise levels and power consumption—typical trade-offs for this performance class.

The Asus ROG Strix SCAR 18 G835LXG is Asus’s flagship gaming laptop and is designed for users with the highest performance demands. Our review unit combines the Intel Core Ultra 9 290HX with an Nvidia GeForce RTX 5090 laptop GPU and also features 128 GB of RAM, two fast 4-TB SSDs in a RAID 0 array, and an 18-inch Mini-LED display with a 240 Hz refresh rate. This makes the high-end laptop equally suitable for demanding games and professional content creation.

Display
The 18-inch Mini-LED display on the Asus ROG Strix SCAR 18 G835LXG features a resolution of 3,840 x 2,400 pixels in a 16:10format and features 2,000 dimming zones as well as a refresh rate of 240 Hz. The image quality impresses with high sharpness, vibrant colors, and uniform backlighting. Thanks to the high refresh rate, motion is rendered extremely smoothly, which is particularly advantageous for gaming. The maximum refresh rate of 240 Hz is only available in GPU Ultimate Mode, which can be enabled via Armoury Crate. In all other GPU modes, the display is limited to 120 Hz.
ASUS offers various display profiles with and without local dimming, allowing the panel to be customized for both gaming and image editing. In HDR mode, the display achieves very high peak brightness and benefits from excellent contrast with deep blacks. With a maximum SDR brightness of around 600 cd/m², the panel remains one of the brightest in its class and is well-suited for bright environments. Full brightness is also available when running on battery power. As is typical for Mini-LED panels, the backlight uses PWM; however, the very high frequency of around 30 kHz is unlikely to cause any issues in practice, even for sensitive users.

Asus also offers 18 different color profiles for the ROG Strix SCAR. However, out of the box, our test unit exhibits comparatively high color deviations, meaning that color accuracy falls short of what is expected from a high-end laptop. Only after calibration does the display improve significantly, and the color deviations are noticeably reduced, making the panel much better suited for color-critical applications.

Test Conditions
The Asus ROG Strix SCAR 18 offers the three familiar power profiles: Quiet, Performance, and Turbo. Turbo mode, which unlocks maximum performance, was used for all benchmarks and measurements. In addition, a manual mode is available, in which, among other things, the GPU clock speeds and fan control can be customized. However, Turbo mode is not available when running on battery power.

The Intel Core Ultra 9 290HX is one of the fastest mobile processors in the current Arrow Lake-HX generation and is designed for high-end gaming laptops and mobile workstations. With its high multi-core performance, it handles demanding applications such as rendering, video editing, or software development just as effortlessly as the latest games. In testing, the processor delivers consistently high performance and ranks among the top notebook CPUs currently available. In the Asus ROG Strix SCAR 18, the manufacturer offers three predefined performance modes with up to 200 watts of peak power. Users who want to adjust settings manually can even allocate up to 240 watts to the mobile processor.

System and Storage Performance
The Asus ROG Strix SCAR 18 impresses in everyday use with very high system speeds and short load times. Applications and games launch quickly, so the laptop always feels extremely responsive. Switching graphics modes via Nvidia Advanced Optimus causes a brief delay when launching some games; this is due to technical limitations and does not cause any further restrictions during operation.

Storage devices
Our test configuration is equipped with two 4-TB PCIe 5.0 SSDs (Samsung PM9E1), providing a total of 8 TB of high-speed mass storage. The drives impress with very high transfer rates and short access times, allowing programs, games, and large files to load particularly quickly. Under sustained load, however, performance declines after some time, so noticeable performance losses are to be expected during longer copy or installation processes.

GPU and Gaming Performance
The Asus ROG Strix SCAR 18 is equipped with an Nvidia GeForce RTX 5090 laptop GPU with 24 GB of GDDR7 VRAM. In our test, the GPU operates at a maximum TGP of 175 watts (150 watts + 25 watts Dynamic Boost), making it the fastest configuration available. Gaming and application performance are correspondingly very high, offering ample performance reserves even for demanding titles at high resolutions.
In manual mode, the GPU and memory clock speeds can be further increased, allowing for a slight additional boost in graphics performance. Another positive aspect is that the RTX 5090 Laptop’s performance remains stable even under sustained load and shows no significant drops. In battery mode, however, a significantly lower power budget is available, which is why GPU performance drops noticeably.

Emissions & Energy
System noise
The noise level of the Asus ROG Strix SCAR 18 depends heavily on the selected power profile. For everyday use, Quiet Mode is recommended, as the fans often stop running under light load and the laptop operates at a pleasantly low noise level. Even less demanding games can be played in this profile with moderate background noise.
In Turbo Mode, however, the fans run continuously and reach up to 55.1 dB(A) under heavy load or while gaming. Headphones are therefore recommended for longer gaming sessions. One positive aspect is that cooling performance remains consistent even at this high noise level. Slight electronic background noise occurred only in a few synthetic GPU benchmarks and was not noticeable during normal operation or while gaming.

Temperature
The surface temperatures of the Asus ROG Strix SCAR 18 remain well under control even under heavy load. We only measured temperatures of up to 45 °C in isolated areas on the underside. The keyboard, on the other hand, warms up only slightly, so the WASD area in particular remains pleasantly cool even during longer gaming sessions.
In the stress test, the cooling system prioritizes the GeForce RTX 5090 Laptop, which stabilizes after a short time at a TGP of approximately 175 watts. The Intel Core Ultra 9 290HX operates in parallel at around 95 watts. Despite the high power consumption, CPU and GPU temperatures remain within a safe range at all times.
(+) The maximum temperature on the upper side is 37.5 °C / 100 F, compared to the average of 40.4 °C / 105 F, ranging from 21.2 to 68.8 °C for the class Gaming.
(±) The bottom heats up to a maximum of 40.9 °C / 106 F, compared to the average of 43.2 °C / 110 F

Speakers
The Asus ROG Strix SCAR 18 features a four-speaker system that delivers good overall sound quality. Voices are reproduced clearly, and music and movies also benefit from a well-balanced sound profile. In a direct comparison with some high-end competitors, however, there are systems with even more powerful sound and deeper bass. For gaming, we recommend using a headset anyway, as the fans are clearly audible under heavy load.

Energy management
The Asus ROG Strix SCAR 18 is not among the most energy-efficient gaming laptops. Even when idle, its power consumption is comparatively high due to its powerful hardware and bright Mini-LED display. Under full load, the system briefly reaches a power consumption of up to 354 watts, but then stabilizes at around 230 watts. The included 450-watt power supply thus provides sufficient headroom. Standby power consumption is unnecessarily high at 19 watts.
Power Consumption and Battery Life
Naturally, the Asus ROG Strix SCAR 18’s 90-Wh battery can only compensate for the system’s high power consumption to a limited extent. In a real-world Wi-Fi test, the gaming laptop achieved a runtime of just 4 hours. Some competitors offer better results in this regard.
