Wilson’s 3D printed 'airless' basketball costing $2500 to be launched in limited production run

A prototype 3D printed airless basketball first showcased by Wilson a year ago will finally be available to buy from February 16, albeit in a limited run of fewer than 200. Designed as a rigid open-lattice shell, the Airless Gen1 Basketball has the exact same size, weight and rebound as a regular basketball. However, at $2500, the first-of-its-kind ball certainly won’t come cheap.

German semiconductor and IoT systems giant Infineon, in collaboration with adidas, has made the Lighting Shoe prototype to showcase its sensor and power systems technology. The shoe, based on the adidas originals NMD S1, uses MEMS microphones and a microcontroller to ‘listen’ to music and create striking lighting effects in sync with the beats. Unfortunately, there are no plans to bring it into production.

World Rugby is introducing smart mouthguards with in-game alerts to detect high acceleration events that could result in concussion. This will help pitch-side doctors assess the severity of individual impacts as well as monitor long-term effects in players. An initial €2 million is being invested towards adoption of the new technology, supplied by Prevent Biometrics, and debuting this month in the WXV elite women’s competition.

New Brooks 3D printed running shoe returns more energy from unique 3D lattice midsole

Brooks has partnered with HP to develop its new Brooks Exhilarate BlueLine running shoes. HP’s Multi Jet Fusion 3D printing technology has been used to create an open 3D lattice for the midsole, labelled 3DNA, which supposedly creates a bouncy, propulsive feel. For now, it will be only released as part of a testing program to select Brooks Run Club loyalty members.
