Foldable Apple iPhone 12 Flip: Concept video inspires

If you would like to imagine how a Galaxy Z Flip paired with iOS could look, then you should have a look here. While a foldable iPhone is probably a long way off yet, an iPhone Flip, or an iPhone 12 Flip, is already a reality. Digitally at least, anyway.

A new teardown video highlights various differences between the Motorola Razr and the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip

The YouTuber JerryRigEverything (or Zach Nelson) has conducted his traditional post-durability test teardown of the Motorola Razr 2020. This video revealed how its maker intends to keep the internals free of dust, as well as other possible destructive forces. This means it has some unusual attributes that the equally foldable Galaxy Z Flip lacks.

Update | The Galaxy Z Flip may be more fragile than Samsung would like you to think

Samsung's second-generation foldable phone was launched along with claims that the OEM had made some strides in keeping this form-factor clear of potentially destructive dust and debris. A new video by teardown specialists iFixit may have called this marketing into question with a colorful experiment.

Microsoft Surface Duo peek function just makes the foldable device even more desirable

A new peek function for the upcoming Microsoft Surface Duo foldable device has been leaked. A couple of short video clips have been shared on Twitter that show the smartphone being opened only slightly but still allowing the user to “peek” at notifications and call information on the far right-hand side of the display.

LG V60 ThinQ 5G: A smartphone fan's dream, but one held back by compromises and an uninspired design.

Excusing its ridiculous name, the LG V60 ThinQ 5G has a lot going for it. Design is not one of them. Resembling a mid-range smartphone crossed with the back of a Galaxy S10, the V60 ThinQ 5G has one foot firmly in the past. Its Snapdragon 865, expandable storage, 5,000 mAh battery, 32-bit Hi-Fi Quad DAC and Dual Screen-connectivity should help the V60 ThinQ 5G appeal to smartphone fans, though.

Opinion | The Mate Xs, hands on with Huawei's flawed foldable

While Huawei's latest foldable is one of the most expensive too, its dizzying €2,499 price tag does not guarantee quality or usability. From creaky hinges to scratched screens, today's launch highlighted why the Mate Xs should be avoided and why Huawei is still yet to perfect the foldable.

Huawei launches the Mate Xs, a €2,499 and Kirin 990-powered foldable smartphone

Succeeding the Mate X, the Mate Xs features an 8-inch OLED panel when unfolded. The Kirin 990 5G-powered device comes with 8 GB of RAM and 512 GB of RAM, along with an improved hinge design over its predecessor. The price? A whopping €2,499.

Better than foldables? TCL first to launch a phone with slide-out screen

Instead of going the foldable way, TCL is experimenting with some other ways to implement flexible screens. The slide-out concept essentially provides the same screen estate but without the awful crease in the middle and possibly reinforcing the durability of the flexible screen. One downside for this design could be the slightly thicker handsets.

The Samsung Galaxy Fold's successor could sport an under-display camera.

Samsung Galaxy Fold 2 may feature an under-display camera, likely to launch around the same time as the Note 20

Fresh leaks about the upcoming Samsung Galaxy Fold 2 indicate that the device's display is likely to be made of ultra-thin glass like the recently launched Galaxy Z Flip. The Fold 2 is also tipped to feature an under-display camera and is expected to launch sometime in July, around the same time as the Galaxy Note 20.

Samsung's claim of the Galaxy Z Flip using a glass display is potentially misleading but is not false

The Samsung Galaxy Z Flip has received much criticism owing to its highly fragile display. While durability tests do not show any indications of the display being made of glass, a closer examination does confirm the company's claims of using ultra-thin glass under a protective plastic layer. However, Samsung's marketing gives the impression that the Galaxy Z Flip's glass display is as reliable and scratch-proof as any other smartphone.

The Samsung Galaxy Z Flip's default keyboard has a bug that can get quite annoying

The Samsung Galaxy Z Flip's default keyboard seems to have a bug that automatically lowercases any letter typed in uppercase and this behavior is persistent even after fiddling around with the settings. It is not a big deal-breaker though, as users can still install third-party keyboards such as Gboard or SwiftKey.

The new Lakefield SoCs will be just slightly larger than the usual smartphone SoCs. (Image Source: WCCFTech)

First Intel Lakefield 3DMark CPU and GPU tests are in

Intel's Lakefield chips are smaller than the usual CPUs, as they stack most components in order to reduce size and improve energy efficiency, much like smartphone SoCs nowadays. According to new 3DMark tests, these chips are certainly not meant for gaming, as they barely match a Celeron G3900 + Nvidia MX250 combo, but they will most likely take energy efficiency to the next level.

First Impressions Samsung Galaxy Z Flip: Take Two

The Galaxy Z Flip is a real eye-catcher among smartphones, and Samsung has taken a similar approach as Motorola with their Razr. On paper, the Korean smartphone should be the better choice. We had the chance to take a first peek at the Flip during a hands-on and were able to find a few improvements over the Fold, but a few drawbacks as well.

The Galaxy Z Flip is only the tip of the fold-berg at Samsung, but it's not consumer-ready yet

Roh Tae-moon, the president of Mobile at Samsung, has claimed that the OEM has developed devices with "even more" hinges than the new Galaxy Z Flip. However, these multi-folding phones are apparently not ready for prime-time yet. This is due to the idea that consumers will want much more UX polish in such products.

The Motorola Razr. (Source: Business Insider)

Opinion | CNET's Motorola Razr test was flawed, and the results proffer no tangible deductions

You've no doubt seen the headline: "Motorola Razr fails folding test, doesn't last up to 28,000 folds". Or something in that vein. Yes, the new Motorola Razr did perform terribly at that test, but what if the test itself was inherently unfair?

Wild Microsoft Surface Duo appears on a Vancouver SkyTrain passenger

The Surface Duo spotted in the wild appears to be a pre-production sample that is tested by Microsoft employees. Unlike the model showcased last October, this one comes with a LED flash on the front and appears to be slightly slimmer, as well. Unfortunately, this could mean that there will be no rear cameras.

Big oof: The Motorola RAZR shows awful durability as it fails a folding test

Hinge noises aren’t as bad as it gets for the new Motorola RAZR. The phone was put through a folding test to see how many times it could be folded before showing damage. The results were...rather disappointing, especially in light of the phone’s US$1500 price tag.

Pablo Escobar's brother announces the Escobar Fold 2 amid claims that Escobar Inc is scamming buyers of the Fold 1

Following on from the Escobar Fold 1, Pablo Escobar's brother has unveiled the Fold 2, another inexpensive foldable smartphone by Escobar Inc. The Fold 2 starts at US$399 for a Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 SoC and up to 512 GB of storage, although Escobar Inc has admitted that the device is a Samsung Galaxy Fold replica. The announcement coincides with reports of Escobar Inc failing to deliver Escobar Fold 1 units and refusing to issue refunds among other red flags, though.

The foldable and clamshell nature of the Samsung phone that may launch as the Galaxy Z Flip seems to have been confirmed in a few recent leaks. New Intel foldable phone patent comes to light

This is the second foldable smartphone patent filed by Intel, showing that the company has taken a more serious interest in mobile devices. Unlike the first concept released last year, this one has only an outward-folding display, but the folding mechanism appears to be much sturdier and the screen itself is completely bezel-less.
