Rollable display technology in smartphones is coming, as we have already seen with the Oppo X 2021 and TCL's concept. However, LG could well be one of the first manufacturers to deliver a rollable smartphone. The South Korean company teased the device last year, but it has now offered what appears to be a hands-on look of it. We should point out that this device may never make it market, but its appearance during the company's CES 2021 event suggests that it will, in our opinion.
Details about the device remain thin on the ground currently, but it seems that it has been trademarked the LG Rollable. Additionally, LG appears to have classified the Rollable under its Explorer Project, of which the Wing is also a part. LG has only shown the Rollable in landscape mode so far, but it looks like a motorised mechanism moves the screen back and forth.
There is the slightest hint in one video that a physical button activates the screen mechanism, although we are only speculating here. LG is yet to reveal what technology the Rollable uses to achieve its rollable form factor. Still, we imagine that the company will continue to drop hints before a release later this year.
