Motorola has been granted a patent for a foldable smartphone that unfolds into a tablet. While it is not the first patent for a foldable smartphone that has surfaced in recent times, it is the first to show how a foldable smartphone could work with a smart case design to give it even more potential usage scenarios.

It appears Lenovo may be working on a new flagship smartphone. A partial image of a bezel-less device has been published on the Weibo account for Chang Cheng, the Lenovo Group’s VP. There is seemingly no controversial notch present on the smartphone, and there is speculation that the device will be officially announced on June 14.

In a statement issued to stockholders today, ZTE said that the it was suspending all "major operating activities" due to the sales ban placed on the company by the U.S. Department of Commerce. While ZTE has enough cash on hand to fulfill its current commercial obligations, the future looks bleak for the Chinese smartphone manufacturer.

The next gen Kirin 980 is being manufactured at TSMC's foundries and uses the 7 nm process. Huawei will also include a new AI chip from Cambricon and an improved GPU, so the upcoming Kirin 980 will surely battle it out with Samsung's Exynos 9820 and Apple's A12 SoCs. The latest HiSilicon chip is scheduled to be launched with the Mate 20 flagships later this year.

The 7 nm manufacturing process will be superseded by the 5 nm one by 2020. Right now, TSMC is working to improve the extreme ultraviolet lithography tech that should lead to reduced power consumption and considerable performance gains for the 7+ nm chips in late 2018. TSMC estimates that the performance gains and power requirements will see minor improvements with the 5 nm stepping.

Google's Android P beta is out, and the good news is you don't need a Pixel or Pixel 2 smartphone to give it a test run. Thanks to Project Treble, Google has been able to work with a select group of OEMs to bring the Android P beta to their devices from day 1.

Google has used its I/O 2018 developer conference to give Android P an early preview, and it looks impressive. It is a comprehensive update to the operating system, including its UI, bringing with it increasingly deeper implementation of machine learning.

According to a Yuanta Securities report, Apple already expressed its interest in integrating rear tri-camera setups for its upcoming high-end smartphones. A cryptic tweet by HTC USA has touted the launch of a new device on May 23. The device is expected to be the upcoming HTC U12+, which is likely to be the only flagship HTC releases this year.

The unannounced LG K30's leak could mean that T-Mobile is getting ready to add the model to its offer. Spec-wise, the LG K30 looks like an entry-level model. Samsung has launched the latest line of its popular A-Series mid-range Galaxy-branded handsets. The new A6 and A6+ pick up features that are comparable to some of Samsung's higher-end Galaxy S-Series.

According to a South Korean news outlet, the number of mobile subscribers in North Korea reached 5 million this year.
