The best laptops for Q2 2020 - 58 laptops in review

Laptop Editors' Choice Awards Q2 2020 In the second quarter of 2020, the amount of reviews has been a bit slow due to the coronavirus. Nevertheless, 58 laptops made it into our test lab and were thoroughly reviewed in succession. In the following laptop comparison you'll find the editors' favorite picks and special recommendations.
Editorial staff (translated by Stephanie Chamberlain), 🇩🇪 🇷🇺

The cross-border shutdown that has happened in recent months due to the coronavirus has had many effects. In this way, hardly any laptop-related novelties were presented (MWC canceled, Computex canceled), and the availability of test devices and laptops that were already being sold was in part also considerably limited. The next upswing in new devices should come at the end of the summer (back-to-school period), which is why we expect an unusually active laptop market for the coming season.

Intel Comet Lake H vs. AMD Ryzen 4000 "Renoir"

That's new: AMD moves forward, and Intel catches up. With the new Comet Lake H processors, Intel is bringing its mobile high-end processors into position, enabling more than 5 GHz at a TDP of 45 watts in laptops. The range includes quad-core, hexa-core, and octa-core CPUs up to the i9-10980HK, which features eight cores and a clock speed of up to 5.3 GHz (single-core Turbo). Our first tests show a narrow advantage for Intel in single-core processing, while AMD is ahead when it comes to multi-core load.

The future promises to be exciting not only for high-performance processors but also for energy-saving mobile CPUs. With "Tiger Lake", Intel will probably provide the answer to AMD's Ryzen 4000 U-series in the second half of 2020. Our first tests of accordingly configured laptops clearly place the current Ryzen processors ahead of Intel's Comet Lake U processors in terms of CPU performance.

The best of the best - These laptops earned the best overall scores

A total of 8 laptops were able to achieve the top score of "Very Good" in our demanding tests in Q2 2020 and thus secure the Top-Rated Award.

The Apple MacBook Pro 13 in its current configuration line (2020), reviewed with the Core i5-1038NG7 CPU, 16 GB of RAM and 512 GB of SSD storage, places itself at the top (92%) and far ahead of its competitors. Compared to its predecessor, little has changed (processor, keyboard). The MacBook Pro 13 is and remains an excellent all-rounder.

Apple MacBook Pro 13 (2020)

Second place (90%) goes to the HP Elite Dragonfly, reviewed with the Core i5-8265U CPU, 16 GB of RAM and Intel Optane/512 GB as SSD. Especially in mobile use, the classy business convertible feels extremely comfortable (360° hinge, good battery life, Wi-Fi 6, and LTE).

Lenovo's ThinkPad X1 Yoga was also able to convince with a 90% overall score in the test. Very similar to the Dragonfly, Lenovo merges its thin high-end business laptop with a convertible in the X1 Yoga and thus manages to create an ultra-mobile and versatile workhorse.

Apple's MacBook Air 2020 also achieved a top score of 90% in the test configuration with the Intel i3 CPU. Although the Air has become considerably more expensive than its long-term predecessor, the laptop has significantly improved in quality (display) and still represents the "cheapest" entry into Apple's laptop product range. In the configuration version with an i5 CPU, the Air has to deal with compromises in favor of a higher performance in terms of battery life and emissions; as a result, it "only" reaches an 88% in our rating.

Dell has updated its XPS 15 9500 flagship laptop just as successfully. Reviewed in a configuration with the i7-10875H CPU, the 1650 Ti graphics card, and a 4K display, the laptop achieves a 90% overall score in our test and thus positions itself in the absolute top among multimedia laptops.

The XPS 15's little sibling, the XPS 13 9300, achieved an 88% overall score in its best configuration with an i7 CPU and a 4K display. Despite a very good overall score, our test places the high-end configuration slightly behind the base configuration with the i5 CPU and Full HD display, which achieved an 89%.

The last representative among the top-ranked is the Microsoft Surface Book 3 15 convertible. The device offers the technical parameters of a multimedia laptop but delivers a convertible concept executed as a detachable. The Surface Book 3's display can be removed from the case, and the user receives a thin tablet with a 15-inch display diagonal.

Our favorites - Editors' Choice Awards Q2 2020

Based on the review results obtained in the period under consideration, we conduct an editorial vote and then present the Editors' Choice Award. The award will be given to those laptops that stand out through their successful overall package, absolute top performance in specific rating areas or a particularly good price-performance ratio and that represent an attractive purchase option for our editors in the respective category.

Acer Swift 3 SF314-42

In the past few weeks, we've had two configuration variants of the Acer Swift 3 SF314-42 in the test. The first one is the high-end version with the AMD Ryzen 7 4700U CPU, an integrated Radeon RX Vega 7 GPU, and a large 1,024 GB SSD storage space, which is sold at a price of around 1,000 Euros (~$1,138). But more interesting for bargain hunters is the version with the Ryzen 3 4300U CPU, the Vega 5 GPU and 256 GB of SSD, because this configuration is available for about 700 Euros (~$797).

The Swift 3 SF314 offers a high-quality, thin (only 17 mm/~0.67 in), and light (1.2 kg/~2.6 lb) case in a compact 14-inch format, regardless of the configuration. The built-in display isn't among the brightest in its class, but the gloss-free, matte surface and the good contrast are well suited for an intended office use. The strengths of the Swift 3 SF314 include its battery life of up to 12 hours when browsing the Internet on WLAN, the high system performance of the AMD CPU/SSD combination, the low emissions, and the good connectivity with USB Type-C 3.2 Gen. 2. The Swift 3 SF314 in the version with the AMD 4300U CPU and a price of almost 700 Euros (~$797) seems to be an extremely attractive option especially for pupils and students.

Gigabyte Aero 17 HDR XB

The Gigabyte Aero 17 HDR XB barely missed the top mark in the test. The latest edition of the 17-inch version of the well-known Aero multimedia all-rounder comes optionally with a fancy HDR-capable 17-inch display, which features an especially high resolution at 3840x2160 pixels (4K), in addition to Intel Comet Lake H octa-core processors.

The display was particularly convincing in the test. Just under 500 candelas of maximum brightness, around 1,300:1 of contrast, a Delta E value under 2, a 100% coverage of sRGB, and 88% of Adobe RGB are all top marks. PWM is also omitted in this display. We also liked the case quality, the port configuration, and the good performance provided by the combination of the i7-10875H CPU and the GeForce 2070 Super Max-Q GPU. If you think a 17-incher isn't mobile, you're wrong: Battery runtimes of over 6 hours in practical use (surfing the web on Wi-Fi) are completely possible, and even the device itself, with a thickness of 21 mm (~0.83 in) and a weight of around 2.6 kg (~5.7 lb), doesn't prohibit its use on the go. The Aero 17 is recommended for creative professionals in need of a large display.

Honor MagicBook 14

We also recommend the Honor MagicBook 14 when it comes to price-performance ratio. We reviewed the 14-inch laptop in the configuration with the AMD Ryzen 5 3500U and an integrated RX Vega 8 GPU. In addition, there's 8 GB of RAM, 256 GB of SSD storage, and a matte display with Full HD resolution. Price: From around 600 Euros (~$683).

We could observe similar advantages in the MagicBook 14 as in the MateBook D14 sibling device in the test. The MagicBook can still undercut the MateBook in terms of price and also has a somewhat brighter display. The case is fancy and stable, the input devices are flawless, and the system performance is almost predestined for office use thanks to the Ryzen 3500U CPU and the NVMe SSD. The MagicBook 14 isn't lacking in mobility either: Up to 9 hours of battery life in web-surfing mode are definitely possible.

Note: Commercial use of the award graphics may require a license. More details.

J. Simon Leitner
Editor of the original article: J. Simon Leitner - Founder, Editorial Director
After my studies at the Vienna Technical University I dedicated myself completely to the project Notebookcheck as a co-founder. Since Commodore C64 and Atari 1040 ST, computers have been an integral part of my daily activities. Beside new technologies, especially electric mobility, my interest also belongs to architecture and construction engineering.
