Acer ConceptD 3 Pro CN315-71P in review: Mobile workstation with space for 3 drives

Workstation with stamina. Acer's 15.6-inch workstation scores points with powerful hardware, good battery life, extensive upgrade options and a Pantone-certified Full HD display. The device doesn't have a Thunderbolt 3 port on board, though.

The Acer ConceptD 3 Pro CN315-71P is a 15.6-inch workstation powered by a Core i7-9750H processor and a Quadro T1000 graphics unit. Furthermore, this is the identically constructed sibling model of the Aspire 7 A715-74G. Competitors include devices like the Lenovo ThinkPad P1 2019, the HP ZBook 15u G6, the Fujitsu Celsius H780 and the Lenovo ThinkPad P53s as well.

Case and connectivity - Acer workstation without Thunderbolt 3

The matte black case (snow-white models are also available) of the Acer workstation consists of a mix of metal (back of the lid, top of the base unit) and plastic (bottom cover, display frame). The laptop looks well manufactured and doesn't reveal any serious stability deficiencies. The battery is firmly built into the device. There is no maintenance hatch.

The workstation doesn't have a Thunderbolt 3 port. Acer has only used a simple USB Type-C port (USB 3.2 Gen 1), which doesn't even offer the DisplayPort via USB-C functionality. In addition, there are three USB Type-A ports (2x USB 3.2 Gen 1, 1x USB 2.0). An external display can only be connected via HDMI. A memory card reader is also missing.

The WLAN chip (Intel Wi-Fi 6 AX200) supports the fast ax standard. The transfer speeds obtained under optimal conditions (no other WLAN devices nearby, short distance between laptop and server PC) are very good.

Input devices - Acer CN315 with keyboard backlighting

The flat, smooth keys of the backlit chiclet keyboard offer a short travel and a clear pressure point. The resistance provided by the keys is pleasing. The illumination (one brightness level) is switched on and off with a function key. All in all, Acer delivers a keyboard suitable for everyday use here. The multi-touch capable ClickPad occupies an area of about 10.6 x 7.8 cm. The smooth pad surface makes it easy for the fingers to glide on it. The pad also reacts to input in the corners. It has a short travel and a clear pressure point.

Display Response Times

Display response times show how fast the screen is able to change from one color to the next. Slow response times can lead to afterimages and can cause moving objects to appear blurry (ghosting). Gamers of fast-paced 3D titles should pay special attention to fast response times.

Screen Flickering / PWM (Pulse-Width Modulation)

To dim the screen, some notebooks will simply cycle the backlight on and off in rapid succession - a method called Pulse Width Modulation (PWM) . This cycling frequency should ideally be undetectable to the human eye. If said frequency is too low, users with sensitive eyes may experience strain or headaches or even notice the flickering altogether.

In comparison: 51 % of all tested devices do not use PWM to dim the display. If PWM was detected, an average of 17553 (minimum: 5 - maximum: 2500000) Hz was measured.

Out of the box, the display's Pantone certification guarantees a good color reproduction. With a color deviation of 3.74, it just misses the target (Delta E less than 3) and doesn't suffer from a blue tint. Calibration provides for some improvements. As a result, the deviation drops to 1.43, and the grayscales are displayed in a more balanced way. The AdobeRGB color space (78%) is not completely reproduced. The sRGB color space (100%) looks much better.

Acer equips the workstation with a viewing-angle stable IPS panel; therefore, the screen can be read from any position. The display can definitely be read outdoors when the sun isn't shining too brightly.

Performance - Acer computer comes with mid-range hardware

With the ConceptD 3 Pro CN315-71P, Acer has a 15.6-inch workstation in its range that offers enough computing power for all common applications. The test device provided to us is available from about 1,550 Euros (~$1,754). Other configuration variants are available.

Processor

The ConceptD is powered by a Core i7-9750H hexa-core processor (Coffee Lake refresh). The CPU operates at a base speed of 2.6 GHz. With Turbo, the clock speed can be increased to 4 GHz (six cores), 4.1 GHz (five cores), 4.2 GHz (four cores), 4.3 GHz (three cores), 4.4 GHz (two cores) and 4.5 GHz (one core), respectively.

When plugged in, the processor works through the CPU tests of the Cinebench R15 benchmark at 2.6 to 3.8 GHz (multithread) and 4 to 4.5 GHz (single-thread), respectively. On battery power, the speeds are 2.6 GHz (multithread) and 2.2 to 2.8 GHz (single-thread).

We verify if the CPU Turbo is also consistently used when plugged in by running the Cinebench R15 benchmark's multithread test in a continuous loop for at least 30 minutes. The results drop from the first to the second run and then stabilize at a constant level. Turbo is used at a low level.

Storage

The system drive is an NVMe SSD (M.2 2280) from Western Digital, which provides 512 GB of storage space. The transfer rates of the SSD are good.

Graphics card

Nvidia's Quadro T1000 graphics unit (Turing) represents the professional version of the GeForce GTX 1650 GPU. It supports DirectX 12 and works at a base speed of 1,395 MHz. An increase to up to 1,725 MHz is possible when boosted.

Higher clock rates are feasible if the GPU does not reach a specified temperature and/or energy threshold. In this way, we register a maximum of 1,734 MHz. Our The Witcher 3 test is run at an average speed of 1,681 MHz. The GPU has access to fast GDDR5 graphics memory (4,096 MB).

The results in the 3DMark benchmarks are at the expected level for this GPU. The UHD Graphics 630 GPU that's integrated into the processor is active, and the laptop works with Nvidia's Optimus graphics-switching solution.

In order to verify whether the frame rates remain largely constant even over a prolonged period of time, we let the game The Witcher 3 run for about 60 minutes at Full HD resolution and maximum quality settings. The character embodied by the player is not moved during this whole period. A drop in frame rates wasn't found.

Noise emissions

The ConceptD 3 Pro does not produce excessive noise over the entire load range. In idle usage, the fans are often silent, and there is no noise. But this is over under load. In this way, we register sound pressure levels of 42.4 dB(A) (stress test) and 36.9 dB(A) (The Witcher 3 test), respectively.

The processor works through our stress test (Prime95 and FurMark run for at least an hour) for a short time at 2.6 GHz. Then the clock rate slowly drops to 1.6 GHz and remains at this level. The graphics core runs at 1,455 MHz. On battery power, the clock rates are 800 MHz (CPU) and 800 to 1,000 MHz (GPU), respectively. The stress test represents an extreme scenario that doesn't occur in everyday life. We use this test to check if the system remains stable even under full load.

The laptop warms up noticeably but not excessively. During the stress test we registered temperatures beyond 50 °C (~122 °F) at one measuring point. The heat development is even slightly stronger when performing our The Witcher 3 test. Nonetheless, the temperatures remain in the green range in everyday use.

Speakers

The stereo speakers have been placed in the front area of the bottom of the device. They produce a decent sound, which is largely lacking in bass. In addition, the speakers only offer a low maximum volume.
