Aspire 7 A715 Laptop Review: Acer's upgrade giant with gaming potential and long battery life

The Aspire 7 A715-74G is one of the multimedia all-rounders in 15.6-inch format. The laptop is a bit more compact and sleeker than previous models. The innards consist of mid-range hardware. Our review unit comes with a Core i5-9300H processor and a GeForce GTX 1650 graphics core. Among the competitors of the Aspire are devices such as the Dell G3 15 3579, the HP Omen 15 and the Asus TUF FX505DT.
Case & Equipment - Stylish, Slim, Compact
Acer uses a mix of materials in the case. The lid back and the top of the base unit are made of metal, the bottom panel and the display frame are made of plastic. The entire case is in matte black. The laptop is well made and does not reveal any serious stability issues. The battery is firmly installed. There is no maintenance flap. To get to the innards, the bottom panel has to be dismantled.
Three of the built-in USB ports (2x Type A, 1x Type C) work according to the USB 3.2 Gen 1 standard, the fourth one according to the USB 2.0 standard. The Type-C USB port does not support DisplayPort over USB-C or Power Delivery 3.0. In addition, there is an HDMI output and a Gigabit Ethernet port. The machine does not have a memory card reader on board.
The WLAN module supports the fast ac standard. The transfer rates determined under optimal conditions (no other WLAN devices in the immediate vicinity, short distance between laptop and server PC) are good.
Connectivity
Input Devices - Suitable for Everyday Use
The Acer computer is equipped with a backlit chiclet keyboard with integrated number pad. The flat, smooth buttons provide a short stroke and a clear pressure point. The key resistance is pleasing. While typing, the keyboard does not yield. The key illumination (one brightness level) is switched on and off via a function key. All in all, Acer delivers a well-made keyboard suitable for everyday use.
The multi-touch ClickPad occupies an area of about 10.6x7.8 cm (~ 4.17x3.07 in). The smooth pad surface makes it easy for the fingers to glide. The pad also responds to inputs in the corners. It has a short stroke and a clear pressure point.
Display - IPS on Board
The matte 15.6-inch display of the Aspire 7 has a native resolution of 1920x1080 pixels. While the display provides a good contrast (1042:1), the brightness (255.8 cd/m²) is too low. The price level of the device requires more. We consider a value beyond 300 cd/m² good. A positive fact: The display shows no PWM flicker.

In comparison: 53 % of all tested devices do not use PWM to dim the display. If PWM was detected, an average of 18694 (minimum: 5 - maximum: 3846000) Hz was measured. |
Ex-factory, we register a Delta E 2000 color deviation of 4.62. This misses the target of Delta E less than 3. By calibrating the display, a slight improvement of the representation can be achieved. The color deviation drops to a value of 3.63 and the gray levels are more balanced. The color spaces AdobeRGB (36%) and sRGB (57%) are not fully covered by the display.
Performance - Acer with Mid-Range Hardware
With the Aspire 7 A715-74G, Acer delivers a 15.6-inch multimedia all-rounder. The computer has enough power for all common applications and handles all current computer games flawlessly. Our test device is available for around 900 to 1000 Euros (~ $989 to $1099). Other configuration options are available.
Processor
The Aspire is powered by a Core i5-9300H quad-core processor (Coffee Lake). The CPU operates at a base clock speed of 2.4 GHz. Turbo can increase the frequency to 4 GHz (four cores) or 4.1 GHz (one core).
The CPU processes the Cinebench benchmarks' multi-thread tests at 3.4 to 4 GHz for a short time, then the frequency drops to 3.3-3.4 GHz. The single-threaded tests are run at 4 to 4.1 GHz. On battery power, the CPU operates at 2.7 to 3.1 GHz (multi-thread) and 2.5 to 4.1 GHz (single-thread).
To determine whether the CPU turbo is permanently used in AC mode, we check by running the multi-thread test of the Cinebench R15 benchmark for at least 30 minutes in a continuous loop. The results decrease slightly from the first to the second run and then remain at a constant level. The turbo is used.

GPU Performance
The GeForce GTX 1650 graphics core (Turing architecture) represents Nvidia's current mid-range model for laptops. It supports DirectX 12 and operates at a base speed of 1395 MHz. The Boost technology makes an increase up to 1560 MHz possible.
Higher clock rates are achievable if the GPU does not reach a specified temperature and/or energy threshold. We register a maximum of 1727 MHz, which, however, can only be maintained for a short time. The "Witcher 3" test is run at an average speed of 1649 MHz. The GPU can rely on fast GDDR5 graphics memory (4,096 GB).
The results in the 3DMark benchmarks are at a level normal for this GPU. The integrated UHD Graphics 630 GPU is active and the laptop utilizes Nvidia's Optimus switching graphics solution.

The player's character is not moved over the entire period. A drop in refresh rates cannot be determined.
