AMD Ryzen 5 3500U

The AMD Ryzen 5 3500U is a mobile SoC that was announced in January 2019. It combines four Zen+ cores (8 threads) clocked at 2.2 - 3.8 GHz with a Radeon RX Vega 8 graphics card with 8 CUs (512 Shaders) clocked at up to 1200 MHz. Specified at 15 Watt TDP, the SoC is intended for thin mid-range laptops. In Chromebooks, AMD calles the APU AMD Ryzen 5 3500C, but with the exact same specifications (and performance).

The Picasso SoCs use the Zen+ microarchitecture with slight improvements that should lead to a 3% IPS (performance per clock) improvements. Furthermore, the 12nm process allows higher clock rates at similar power consumptions.

The integrated dual-channel memory controller supports up to DDR4-2400 memory. As the features of the Picasso APUs are the same compared to the Raven Ridge predecessors, we point to our Raven Ridge launch article.

AMD states that the Picasso APUs are about 8% faster than the predecessors. Therefore, the Ryzen 5 3500U should be ahead the Ryzen 5 2500U (2 - 3.6 GHz) and nearly on par with the Ryzen 7 2700U (2.2 - 3.8 GHz). The performance in our tests depends a lot on the used TDP settings and cooling system. Looking at our Cinebench R15 loop you see a huge difference on the sustained performance, but not as high as for the Ryzen 7 3700U. The average Ryzen 5 3500U for example is even slightly faster than an average Ryzen 7 3700U in our tests (performance rating). Compared with Intel CPUs, the 3500U is on par with a Intel Core i5-8265U (Whiskey Lake Quad-Core 1.6 - 3.9 GHz).

AMD Ryzen 5 4500U

The AMD Ryzen 5 4500U is a processor for thin and light laptops based on the Renoir architecture. The 4500U integrates six cores based on the Zen 2 microarchitecture. They are clocked at 2.3 (guaranteed base clock) to 4 GHz (Turbo) without SMT / Hyperthreading support (6 threads). The chip is manufactured in the modern 7 nm process at TSMC and partly thanks to it AMD advertises a 2x improved performance per Watt for the Renoir chips. Compared to the similar Ryzen 5 4600U, the 4500U offers no SMT, but otherwise shoudl perform quite similar. 

With two less cores, the Ryzen 5 4500U is clearly slower than the Ryzen 7 4700U and 4800U in multi threaded workloads. However, it should still beat the fastest 15 Watt Ice Lake Intel Core i7-1065G7 (4 cores, 3.9 GHz). Thanks to the 4 GHz Boost clock, the single core performance should be similar. Therefore, the Ryzen 5 4600U is a very fast 15 Watt CPU and clearly faster than the old Ryzen 7 3700U.

In addition to the six CPU cores, the APU also integrates a Radeon RX Vega 6 integrated graphics card with 6 CUs and up to 1500 MHz. The dual channel memory controller supports DDR4-3200 and energy efficient LPDDR4-4266 RAM. Furthermore, 8 MB level 3 cache can be found on the chip. The TDP of the APU is specified at 15 Watt (default) and can be configured from 10 to 25 Watt by the laptop vendor. That means the chip is intended for thin and light laptops (but with fans).

AMD Ryzen 3 3200U

The AMD Ryzen 3 3200U is a mobile Dual-Core-SoC that was announced in January 2019. It combines two Zen+ cores (with SMT / Hyperthreading so running 4 threads) clocked at 2.6 - 3.5 GHz with a Radeon RX Vega 3 graphics card with 3 CUs (192 Shaders) clocked at up to 1200 MHz. Specified at 15 Watt TDP, the SoC is intended for thin mid-range laptops.

The Picasso SoCs use the Zen+ microarchitecture with slight improvements that should lead to a 3% IPS (performance per clock) improvements. Furthermore, the 12nm process allows higher clock rates at similar power consumptions.

The integrated dual-channel memory controller supports up to DDR4-2400 memory. As the features of the Picasso APUs are the same compared to the Raven Ridge predecessors, we point to our Raven Ridge launch article.

In contrast to the faster quad-core Picasso APUs, the Ryzen 3 3200U only supports 3 instead of 4 displays in total.

AMD states that the Picasso APUs are about 8% faster than the predecessors. Therefore, the Ryzen 3 3200U should be faster than the Ryzen 3 2200U (2.5 - 3.4 GHz Dual Core with SMT).
