HP 17 in Review: Ryzen notebook for the home desk

Ryzen Office. HP's 17.3-inch model is a simple office notebook with a Ryzen 5-3500U APU, 16GB memory (dual-channel mode), NVMe SSD and a matte IPS screen. In addition, an optical drive is on board. With a price of just under 800 Euros (~$934), the computer is not a bargain.

With the 17-ca, Hewlett Packard has a simple 17.3-inch notebook in its range, which is powered by a Ryzen 5-APU. The device is not unknown to us. It is identical in construction to the HP 17-by and the HP 470 G7. There are differences between the notebooks in terms of color and surface texture. Competitors include devices like the Asus Vivobook F712FA and the Lenovo V340-17IWL.

Since the HP 17-ca is identical in construction to the 17-by and the 470 G7, we won't go any further into the case, equipment, input devices and speakers. The corresponding information can be found in the test reports on the HP 17-by2437ng and the HP 470 G7.

Display - IPS on board

The matte 17.3-inch display of the HP computer works with a native resolution of 1,920 x 1,080 pixels. While the contrast (1,308:1) is good, the brightness (287.3 cd/m²) could be better. We consider values beyond 300 cd/m² as good.

Unfortunately, the screen shows a flickering with a frequency of 250 Hz. Due to the low frequency, sensitive people might experience headaches and/or eye problems.

Display response times show how fast the screen is able to change from one color to the next. Slow response times can lead to afterimages and can cause moving objects to appear blurry (ghosting). Gamers of fast-paced 3D titles should pay special attention to fast response times.
       Response Time Black to White
26 ms ... rise ↗ and fall ↘ combined↗ 16 ms rise
↘ 10 ms fall
The screen shows relatively slow response rates in our tests and may be too slow for gamers.
In comparison, all tested devices range from 0.1 (minimum) to 240 (maximum) ms. » 57 % of all devices are better.
This means that the measured response time is worse than the average of all tested devices (21.6 ms).
Response Time 50% Grey to 80% Grey
40 ms ... rise ↗ and fall ↘ combined↗ 22 ms rise
↘ 18 ms fall
The screen shows slow response rates in our tests and will be unsatisfactory for gamers.
In comparison, all tested devices range from 0.2 (minimum) to 636 (maximum) ms. » 56 % of all devices are better.
This means that the measured response time is worse than the average of all tested devices (33.9 ms).

Screen Flickering / PWM (Pulse-Width Modulation)

To dim the screen, some notebooks will simply cycle the backlight on and off in rapid succession - a method called Pulse Width Modulation (PWM) . This cycling frequency should ideally be undetectable to the human eye. If said frequency is too low, users with sensitive eyes may experience strain or headaches or even notice the flickering altogether.
Screen flickering / PWM detected 250 Hz ≤ 40 % brightness setting

The display backlight flickers at 250 Hz (worst case, e.g., utilizing PWM) Flickering detected at a brightness setting of 40 % and below. There should be no flickering or PWM above this brightness setting.

The frequency of 250 Hz is relatively low, so sensitive users will likely notice flickering and experience eyestrain at the stated brightness setting and below.

In comparison: 53 % of all tested devices do not use PWM to dim the display. If PWM was detected, an average of 18071 (minimum: 5 - maximum: 3846000) Hz was measured.

HP equips the 17.3-incher with a viewing angle stable IPS panel. Thus the screen can be read from any position. The notebook can be read outdoors when the sun is not too bright.

Processor

The HP computer has a Ryzen-5-3500U-APU(Picasso) on board. The CPU part of the APU consists of a quad-core processor that operates at a basic speed of 2.1 GHz. By means of turbo, an increase up to 3.7 GHz is possible. Simultaneous multithreading (two threads can be processed per core) is supported.

The multi-thread tests of the Cinebench benchmarks are run for a short time at 3.2 to 3.3 GHz. Then the clock rate drops to 3 to 3.1 GHz. The single-thread tests are processed with 1.6 to 3.7 GHz. In battery operation, clock rates of 2.4 to 3.1 GHz (multi-thread) and 1.4 to 2.4 GHz (single-thread) are achieved.

Multi-Thread (network operation)
Multi-Thread (network operation)
Single-Thread (network operation)
Single-Thread (network operation)

We check whether the CPU turbo is also used permanently in network operation by running the multi-thread test of the Cinebench R15 benchmark in a loop for at least 30 minutes. The results decrease slightly from the tenth to the eleventh run and then remain at a constant level. The turbo is used continuously, but not at full power.

Mass Storage

The system drive is an NVMe-SSD from Intel. It is a model in M.2-2280 format, which provides 512 GB of storage space. The transfer rates are good. However, the SSD is not among the top models.

Inside the notebook there is a compartment for a 2.5-inch storage medium. Our test device cannot be extended by such a medium, since neither a mounting frame nor a SATA slot are included in the scope of delivery.

An NVMe SSD serves as the system drive.

Gaming Performance

The Ryzen-APU brings quite a lot of games to the screen. This primarily includes titles whose hardware requirements are not too high. Most games achieve smooth refresh rates at HD resolution (1,280 x 720 pixels) and medium quality settings - often more is possible. Even the one or other current title can be played.

Emissions - The HP laptop hardly heats up

Noise emissions

The fan of the HP 17 works permanently in idle mode. This is due to the HP's own BIOS option "Fan always on". If it is deactivated, the fan often stops. That is definitely not the case under load. However, the fan does not turn up excessively. Thus, we measured a maximum sound pressure level of 37 dB(A) (stress test).

Temperature

The HP 17 in the stress test.
The HP 17 in the stress test.

Our stress test (Prime95 and FurMark run for at least one hour) is run through the HP notebook in the same way in both mains and battery operation. The processor and graphics core work for several minutes at speeds between 2.4 to 2.8 GHz and 600 to 800 MHz. Then the clocks gradually drop to 1.4 to 1.5 GHz (CPU) or 200 to 250 MHz (GPU). The stress test represents an extreme scenario that does not occur in everyday life. With this test we check whether the system runs stable even at full capacity

In the case of the HP laptop there is no warming. During the stress test, we registered temperatures in the lower 30 degree Celsius (86 Fahrenheit) range at some measuring points. In everyday use, the values turn out even lower.

The HP 17 is a simple 17.3-inch office notebook primarily designed for use on the home desk. Neither the mediocre battery life nor the low torsional stiffness of the plastic housing speak for mobile use.

The built-in Ryzen-5-3500U-APU provides more than enough computing power for office and internet applications. In addition, it enables the use of computer games, at least to a limited extent. Good: The device hardly heats up and does not produce excessive noise.

The HP 17-ca1149ng represents a largely well-rounded desktop notebook. HP should reconsider the price level.

The memory capacity (512 GB) is okay. An exchange of the existing NVMe SSD for a faster and/or larger capacity model would be feasible. A further upgrade of the RAM (16 GB, dual channel mode) is not possible according to HP, since the maximum is already built in. Maintenance and upgrade measures require an opening of the case. The process is not very user-friendly.

The screen (FHD, IPS) has a matte surface, stable viewing angles, decent color display and good contrast. The maximum brightness of the display should be higher. The keyboard has proven to be suitable for everyday use. However, we miss a key illumination. Users who want an optical drive can be happy about a DVD burner. HP supplies standard fare on the interface side. There is no type C USB slot.

For the HP 17 review unit 800 Euro (~$934) was required. In our opinion, this is too high. After all, this is a plastic notebook with a 2019 APU, an unlit keyboard, lame WLAN data rates and only a one-year warranty. Moreover, a type C USB slot is missing. A price level of 600 to 650 Euros (~$700 to $759) would be more realistic.
