The Mediatek Kompanio 838 is a mid-range ARM SoC (system-on-a-chip) for Chromebooks. It has a total of eight CPU cores (octa-core). These are made up of 4 ARM Cortex-A78 cores and 4 Cortex-A55 cores, which work together in a big.LITTLE network.
The A78 cores of the 838 clock at up to 2.6 GHz, the A55 cores up to 2 GHz. The ARM Mali-G57 MP3 is used as the graphics unit. A video decoder with H.264, HEVC, VP-9 and AV1 support (at least partially for 4K) is also integrated.
In addition to the CPU and graphics chip, the chip integrates an LPDDR4x-3733 / DDR4-3200 memory controller. The SoC also has an AI accelerator with a rather low maximum performance of 4 TOPS.
