Verdict - The HP Z2 Mini G1a convinces as a versatile mini workstation
The HP Z2 Mini G1a proves to be a powerful and compact workstation solution in the test, which was specially designed for professional applications. The AMD Ryzen AI Max+ PRO 395 with its 16 cores ensures high computing power, which is complemented by the integrated Radeon RX 8060S graphics unit. As an extremely high-performance iGPU, it can compete with an Nvidia GeForce RTX 4070 laptop, for example. The system therefore offers good conditions for computing-intensive tasks such as 3D rendering or video editing. The connectivity is good but does not stand out due to special interfaces or in terms of numbers.
Less convincing is the enormously high noise development under load. In Quiet mode, the background noise is much more bearable without losing much performance. Despite the high performance of the CPU and iGPU, the energy consumption remains reasonable. Ultimately, the HP Z2 Mini G1a is currently one of the best compact workstations on the market: powerful, expandable, and ideal for professional users who are looking for a space-saving solution without compromising on performance.
Pros
Cons
Price and availability
The compact workstation including 128 GB of RAM can be ordered directly from HP for 4.586 Dollars.
With the Z2 Mini G1a, HP delivers a powerful and flexibly configurable mini workstation. The test device features an AMD Ryzen AI Max+ PRO 395 together with the AMD Radeon RX 8060S. HP installed 64 GB of the fast LPDDR5X-8533 RAM with ECC as working memory. However, this cannot be upgraded. Alternatively, HP also offers the Z2 Mini G1a with AMD Ryzen AI Max PRO 390 and 32 GB RAM.
Specifications
Housing & equipment
With the Z2 Mini G1a, HP relies on a cleanly finished plastic casing. Even though there is no metal, the design looks modern, functional, and high-quality. The front serves as a fresh air supply and blends in well visually. Fingerprints stick less than on metal, which makes maintenance easier.
The HP Z2 Mini G1a offers a practical selection of connections, including several USB-A and USB-C ports as well as display outputs, which are only available as Mini DisplayPort. Two Thunderbolt interfaces (40 Gbit/s) are available as standard and ensure good expandability.

Accessories
Apart from the device itself, HP does not supply any other accessories with the Z2 Mini G1a.
Maintenance
Maintenance options are quite convenient. The housing is easy to open. However, tools are required to access the mass storage or the Wi-Fi module. However, the HP Z2 Mini G1a does not offer any more upgrade options.
Sustainability
The HP Z2 Mini G1a is packaged in a box made from 100 percent certified and recycled fibers. HP has been awarded various environmental labels and certifications for its sustainability.
Performance
Test conditions
For all performance tests with the HP Z2 Mini G1a, we use the "Performance Mode" energy profile, which is activated in the UEFI by default. However, we recommend Quiet Mode, which reduces the noise level to a tolerable level.
Processor
The AMD Ryzen AI Max+ PRO 395 has 16 cores, 32 threads and clock speeds of up to 5.1 GHz based on the Zen 5 architecture. With fast quad-channel LPDDR5x and an NPU with up to 50 TOPS, it is ideal for demanding workloads in compact systems. The single-core performance is weaker, but is compensated by strong multi-core performance. It can't quite keep up with the Ryzen 9 9955HX, but offers the better overall package. The fan gets loud in high-performance mode, but the device remains significantly quieter in quiet mode with similar performance.

Cinebench R15 Multi endurance test
The Cinebench R15 continuous loop shows that HP manages to keep the performance of the AMD Ryzen AI Max+ PRO 395 at a consistently high level.
System performance
The HP Z2 Mini G1a delivers a strong system performance overall. In some tests, however, it is slightly behind the comparison devices in our tests. Our test device can show its strengths especially in the RAM tests. A dedicated NPU with a performance of 50 TOPS accelerates AI applications and works about as fast as in the Minisforum AI X1 Pro.

Graphics card and gaming performance
The integrated Radeon RX 8060S in the HP Z2 Mini G1a offers graphics performance that can compete with an Nvidia GeForce RTX 4070 laptop. Depending on the test scenario, the AMD Radeon RX 8060S can even deliver more performance, although sometimes it is only sufficient for the midfield. With the Radeon RX 8060S, the HP Z2 Mini G1a is equipped with the most powerful iGPU currently available on the consumer market. Even gaming is possible with the HP Z2 Mini G1a if you limit yourself primarily to 1080p in current games.

Emissions
Noise emissions
The HP Z2 Mini G1a stands out extremely negatively in our volume measurements. With a volume of up to 70 dB(A) (Witcher 3 game test), we measured the loudest value we have ever achieved with Mini PCs. In quiet mode, the noise level drops to a more bearable 47 dB(A). If you are not using the device remotely, you should definitely activate quiet mode in the UEFI.
