Verdict — Excellent Value If You Can Tolerate Windows ARM
"Bang for the buck" is arguably the strongest selling point for the OmniBook 5 14. At less than $600, this is one of the few subnotebooks in its price range to ship with an OLED screen offering superior colors and black levels than most other affordable alternatives. If you value the benefits of OLED and the extreme battery life and quiet operation of Windows on ARM, then the OmniBook 5 14 is an enticing option especially when running software natively without resorting to emulation.
In terms of hardware, the speakers are surprisingly loud while the thin metal design can be easily mistaken for an EliteBook from afar. It's a very comfortable machine to use despite the small screen size, but we would have preferred to have USB-C ports on both sides of the system for more flexibility when charging.
There are a few cut corners to keep in mind. Glare can be an issue on the glossy screen since this particular OLED panel isn't very bright at just 300 nits. While 4K OLED with HDR or fast refresh rates are common on pricier models, the panel here is only 1200p at 60 Hz with no HDR support. Software compatibility is hit or miss with emulated applications in particular responding noticeably more slowly and with more frequent errors. At best, native software can run faster than a Core Ultra 7 256V laptop costing hundreds of dollars more like the Dell 14 Plus, but emulated software may run slower than an older Core i5-1335U system. The lack of an integrated SD reader may be a sticking point for some especially since the system excels at graphics editing or remote work where media is commonly stored on camera SD cards.
It's nonetheless difficult to find another machine with hardware features as strong as our HP as many in this price range tend to be more budget-oriented with thicker profiles and cheaper plastic parts.

Price and Availability
HP is now shipping the OmniBook 5 14 as reviewed for $550. The model is also available on Amazon for $570.
The OmniBook 5 AI 14 is one of HP's least expensive options in the OmniBook lineup behind the pricier OmniBook Ultra 14, OmniBook Ultra Flip 14, and OmniBook X AI 14. As such, the OmniBook 5 14 pares back on a few luxury features while excelling in other areas.
Our test unit is a middle configuration with the Snapdragon X Plus X1P-42-100 processor, 1200p OLED display, and 1 TB SSD for approximately $600 to $700. Other configurations are available with half the RAM, optional touchscreen, or the Snapdragon X X1-26-100 instead, but the 1200p OLED screen is fixed.
Alternatives to the OmniBook 5 14 include other inexpensive subnotebooks like the Dell 14 Plus, Lenovo ThinkBook 14, or the Asus Vivobook 14 series.

The display backlight flickers at 480 Hz (worst case, e.g., utilizing PWM) . The frequency of 480 Hz is relatively high, so most users sensitive to PWM should not notice any flickering. However, there are reports that some users are still sensitive to PWM at 500 Hz and above, so be aware. In comparison: 53 % of all tested devices do not use PWM to dim the display. If PWM was detected, an average of 8169 (minimum: 5 - maximum: 343500) Hz was measured. |

Emissions
System Noise
The system is almost silent when running typical day-to-day workloads such as browsing or editing. Perhaps most notably, it would remain relatively quiet even when running GPU-heavy loads. Running CPU-heavy tasks for extended periods will increase fan noise somewhat sharply up to 38 dB(A) similar to what we observed on the OmniBook X 14.
