HP OmniBook X AI 14 Review: Snapdragon laptop for everyday use with long battery life but weak display
Unbalanced.
The HP OmniBook X AI 14 is a compact 14-inch laptop featuring a Snapdragon X Elite processor that enables very good battery runtimes. However, HP has cut some corners in key areas that raises eyebrows and affects the overall impression of the laptop.Andreas Osthoff, 👁 Andreas Osthoff, ✓ Vaidyanathan Subramaniam (translated by DeepL / Ninh Duy) Published 🇩🇪 🇫🇷 ...
Verdict: The OmniBook X deserves a better display
With the OmniBook X AI 14, HP has a slim Snapdragon laptop on offer that leaves mixed impressions for an RRP of $1,100. The entry Snapdragon X Elite processor is used, but its performance is perfectly adequate for most office applications.
However, it is important to note the limited software compatibility as there is not all programs come in a corresponding ARM version and not all x86 apps can be effectively emulated. So before buying, you should definitely check whether your desired software works on ARM CPUs to avoid unpleasant surprises.
The bigger problem, in the OmniBook X AI's case is the display. HP uses an IPS panel with a brightness of just under 300 cd/m². Together with the highly reflective surface, this is simply not enough in many situations.
At the same time, the subjective image impression is also clouded by the low 60 Hz refresh rate and slow response times that lend to visible ghosting. The only real advantage of the panel is the low power consumption, which probably explains why the battery life is very good.
If you can cope with the somewhat underwhelming display and the limitations of the ARM platform, the OmniBook X AI 14 definitely merits a consideration especially considering the fact that it is already available online for less than $1,000.
An improved display, or at least an option to configure one with, would have helped make the device a much better package overall.

The HP OmniBook X is a light and thin 14-inch laptop with a Snapdragon X Elite processor from Qualcomm. For an RRP of $1,100, you get the X1E-78-100 without a dual-core turbo, 16 GB RAM, a 1 TB SSD, and a 60 Hz 2.2K IPS touchscreen.
Specifications
Chassis and hardware: Mixed impressions
The OmniBook X AI 14 is a slim 14-inch laptop that comes in Meteor Silver (our variant) and Ceramic White options. The design is simple but pleasing, and the sandblasted, anodized surfaces are very unobtrusive to fingerprints.
At a thickness of 14.3 mm, it is one of the slimmer models we've seen, with only the Samsung Galaxy Book4 Edge being noticeably thinner. We are not completely satisfied with the stability, as the base unit can be visibly twisted, which is also accompanied with creaking noises.
The stability of the lid is decent, and the hinges are tight, but there is still some noticeable wobble. The lid opens to a maximum angle of about 135°. The bottom cover is easy to remove and gives access to the fans, the M.2 2280 SSD, and the WLAN module.
The impression of the hardware onboard is mixed. Only one of the two USB-C ports supports the USB 4.0 standard, but at least there is still a regular USB-A port on the right-hand side.
Additionally, the Qualcomm FastConnect 7800 Wi-Fi 7 module, which is a staple in all other Snapdragon-powered laptops, is not used. Instead, HP uses a lower-end FastConnect 6900 Wi-Fi 6E variant. The transfer rates are still decent in practice, however.
The webcam (including mechanical aperture) is a 5 MP sensor, and the image quality is very good. Windows Studio effects are supported as is facial recognition via Windows Hello.

Sustainability
Most of the OmniBook's packaging is made of cardboard. Some recycled materials are also used in the device itself: the speaker housing and screen bezel are made from recycled plastic, the keycaps and keyboard switches contain recycled household plastic, and recycled metal is used in the cover, keyboard frame, base unit and keyboard support plate.
The device meets the EPEAT Gold standard with Climate+ and is Energy Star-certified; information on CO2 emissions during production is not available.
Input devices: Comfortable keyboard
Although the backlit keyboard only offers a fairly short travel distance, the stroke is precise, and the overall typing feel is comfortable. However, the keystrokes are also quite loud.
The F-keys are slightly contrasting in color, as is the power button at the top right. The vertical arrow keys are small and there are no dedicated up/down keys, and the backlight cannot be activated automatically.
The ClickPad works without any problems and offers good gliding properties, but the mechanical clicks in the lower area are quite loud. The capacitive touchscreen is also available for inputs.
Display: 2.2K 60 Hz IPS panel is a disappointment
As with the OmniBook 14 Ultra, HP once again relies on a 14-inch IPS display with a resolution of 2,240 x 1,400 pixels (16:10) for the OmniBook X AI 14 although the panel ID is different.
The test device performs significantly worse in terms of brightness with an average value of less than 300 cd/m², making it the weakest device in the comparison by far.
Subjectively, the content is sufficiently sharp, colors are vivid, and the contrast is high. However, the 60 Hz refresh rate in combination with the slow response times is clearly noticeable in everyday use, which also gives an impression of visible ghosting.
PWM flickering is not used, but there are clearly visible halos while checking for backlight bleed. Neither the brightness nor the color temperature can be adjusted automatically.

In our analysis with the professional CalMAN software, the display quality is average and should be sufficient for everyday tasks.
There is no visible color cast, and the color temperature is also suitable, but some color deviations are above the important limit of 3 so serious image editing is not possible.
Our calibration software does not work on the ARM OmniBook X 14, which is why we cannot provide a corresponding ICC profile. The sRGB color space is fully covered.

The combination of the highly reflective screen and the low brightness can also lead to visibility problems indoors.
This is of course even more pronounced outdoors, which is not ideal for a device designed for mobility. The viewing angle stability is okay.
Performance: Snapdragon X Elite without dual-core Turbo
Test conditions
The OmniBook X AI 14 does not offer any additional energy profiles. We used the Windows Best Performance profile for the test.
Processor: X1E-78-100
HP equips the OmniBook X AI 14 with the entry Snapdragon X Elite, the X1E-78-100. This does not offer a dual-core turbo, and the cores can reach a maximum of 3.4 GHz. The TDP cannot be read out, but based on the power consumption, we assume that the CPU can consume 40-45 W for a short time before leveling off at 25-30 W.
Performance in the native benchmarks is basically okay and is perfectly sufficient for most office tasks, as long as there is compatible ARM software. We have also listed the remaining CPU benchmarks below, but these are emulated and therefore not representative of the performance potential.
The performance remains stable in battery mode. Further CPU benchmarks can be found in our mobile processor benchmark list.

System performance
The subjective performance impression is good, and the system responds quickly to inputs. The benchmark results are satisfactory.
The big problem remains compatibility, as there are not corresponding ARM versions for all applications. You should find out in advance whether your desired software will run on the platform.

DPC latency
We cannot perform our latency test on the ARM OmniBook. When playing a 4K YouTube video, there were no conspicuous issues with skipped or dropped frames.
Mass storage
HP installs the SN560 SSD from Western Digital with a capacity of 1 TB, of which 879 GB is still available after the initial startup.
The performance of the PCIe 4.0 SSD is perfectly fine and remains fairly stable even under constant load. Further SSD benchmarks can be found here.
