AMD Ryzen 7 3750H vs Intel Core i7-4712MQ vs Intel Core i7-4800MQ

AMD Ryzen 7 3750H

► remove from comparison AMD R7 3750H

The AMD Ryzen 7 3750H is a mobile SoC that was announced in January 2019. It combines four Zen+ cores (8 threads) clocked at 2.3 - 4 GHz with a Radeon RX Vega 10 graphics card with 10 CUs (640 Shaders) clocked at up to 1400 MHz. Compared to the similar Ryzen 7 3700U, the 3750H offers a 20 Watt higher TDP and therefore a better performance under long periods of load. The integrated dual-channel memory controller supports up to DDR4-2400 memory. As the features of the Picasso APUs are the same compared to the Raven Ridge predecessors, we point to our Raven Ridge launch article.

Picasso SoCs use the Zen+ microarchitecture with slight improvements that should lead to a 3% IPS (performance per clock) improvements.

Performance

The average 3750H in our database is in the same league as the Core i7-10610U, as far as multi-thread benchmark scores are concerned. This is a fairly good result, as of early 2022.

The ROG Zephyrus G15 GA502DU is among the fastest laptops built around the 3750H that we know of. It can be about 20% faster in CPU-bound workloads than the slowest system featuring the same chip in our database, as of August 2023.

Power consumption

This Ryzen 7 has a default TDP of 35 W (also known as the long-term power limit). Laptop manufacturers are free to change that value to anything between 12 W and 35 W with clock speeds and performance changing accordingly. These values are comparatively high, making an active cooling solution pretty much a necessity.

Last but not the least, this AMD APU is built with a rather old, as of late 2022, 12 nm process for lower-than-average energy efficiency.

Intel Core i7-4712MQ

► remove from comparison Intel 4712MQ

The Intel Core i7-4712MQ is a high-end quad-core processor for laptops. It is based on the Haswell architecture and manufactured in 22nm. Due to Hyperthreading, the four cores can handle up to eight threads in parallel leading to better utilization of the CPU. Each core offers a base speed of 2.3 GHz but can dynamically increase clock rates with Turbo Boost up to 3.0 GHz (for 4 active cores), 3.2 GHz (for 2 active cores) and 3.3 GHz (for 1 active core). In contrast to the Core i7-4712HQ, the 4712MQ is not soldered, has a slightly lower clocked GPU an doesn't support VT-d.

Haswell is the successor to the Ivy Bridge architecture with improvements on both GPU and CPU performance. The CPUs are produced in 22nm and offer an optimized branch prediction as well as additional execution ports. Furthermore, new features like AVX2 and FMA should increase the performance in future applications.

The performance of the Core i7-4712MQ is similar to the Core i7-4750HQ and slightly above the Ivy Bridge-based i7-3630QM. Even very demanding software or multitasking will be handled easily.

The integrated Intel HD Graphics 4600 offers 20 Execution Units (EUs) clocked at 400 MHz up to 1150 MHz with Turbo Boost, making it about 30 % faster than the HD 4000.

With a TDP of only 37 W (including graphics card, memory controller and VRMs), the Core i7-4712MQ is specified at the level of mobile dual-core CPUs. Therefore, even smaller laptops can use the Core i7.

Intel Core i7-4800MQ

► remove from comparison Intel 4800MQ

The Intel Core i7-4800MQ is a high-end quad-core processor for laptops which has been launched in Q2/2013. It is based on the Haswell architecture and manufactured in 22nm. Due to Hyperthreading, the four cores can handle up to eight threads in parallel leading to better utilization of the CPU. Each core offers a base speed of 2.7 GHz but can dynamically increase clock rates with Turbo Boost up to 3.5 GHz (for 4 active cores), 3.6 GHz (for 2 active cores) and 3.7 GHz (for 1 active core).

Haswell is the successor to the Ivy Bridge architecture with improvements on both GPU and CPU performance. The CPUs are produced in 22nm and offer an optimized branch prediction as well as additional execution ports, improving the performance per clock by almost 10 percent. Furthermore, new features like AVX2 and FMA should increase the performance in future applications.

Due to these changes, the performance has been improved slightly compared to Ivy Bridge. Therefore, the 4800MQ is about 10 % faster than the former i7-3740QM.

The integrated Intel HD Graphics 4600 offers 20 Execution Units (EUs) clocked at 400 MHz up to 1300 MHz with Turbo Boost, making it about 30 % faster than the HD 4000.

The i7-4800MQ is rated at a TDP of 47 W including graphics card, memory controller and VRMs.  Therefore, the CPU is only suited for laptops 15-inches or greater.
