The Best Laptops of Q1/2020 - 59 Laptops in Review

Laptop Editor's Choice Awards Q1 2020. During the last three months we had a total of 59 laptops of different categories in review. Time for a summary. What notebooks scored highest? Which ones are we recommending and why? What are the best offers right now? The answers to these questions and much more can be found in the following laptop comparison.
Redaktion, Andrea Grüblinger (translated by Finn D. Boerne),

The first three months of this year were initially subtitled “Waiting for Intel and Nvidia” until a new player named “COVID-19” entered the game. Chinese factories were forced to close, resulting in interrupted supply chains and numerous manufacturers announcing delays and imminent expectations of low stock. In the meantime, both Europe and the United States have been hit hard by the coronavirus and issued mandatory total lockdowns. On the other side of the world, Asia is slowly picking up pace again. In just a few months the world went from Europe waiting on finished products to Asia waiting for customer demand. We will have to wait and see how things will continue to develop, and what the effects on already introduced and anticipated notebooks are going to be.

Intel Ice Lake-U, AMD Ryzen 3000, Ryzen 4000

Let us take a look at what is currently available already, or in other words: What laptops we had in review in the past weeks and months. In addition to numerous laptops based on Intel’s latest Ice Lake platform we noticed a noticeable growth of AMD Ryzen-based notebooks, particularly in the realm of entry-level multimedia devices. Not much has changed in the world of high-end gaming notebooks, although we do expect a significant number of announcements over the coming months due to Nvidia’s recent release of the RTX Super series of GPUs. The business segment has also been put on hold for the time being as Comet Lake V-Pro processors have not yet been released. Last but not least there is AMD’s recently released Ryzen Mobile 4000, aka “Renoir”.

Apple, Dell, HP and Lenovo laptops at the top

When looking at the highest scores achieved in the last three months, regardless of category, Apple’s MacBook Pro 13, the portable workhorse among Apple notebooks, is clearly the winner. Rumor has it that the MBP13 will be replaced by a 14-inch successor in the near future. Many users will also be very interested in the more affordable 2020 refresh of the MacBook Air, which was still in review at the time of writing. A close second to the MBP13 is Dell’s XPS 13 9300. The portable XPS-series device features a larger 16:10 display and higher GPU performance than before thanks to Intel’s Ice Lake. Another close contender is Lenovo’s ThinkPad X1 Carbon G7, which is also based on Intel’s Ice Lake platform. “Limitless Working” is the motto for HP’s EliteBook x360 1030 G4 and Lenovo’s ThinkPad L13 Yoga, both of which are business convertibles with a 360-degree hinge. Then there is Microsoft's Surface Pro 7 – also a convertible but much more a tablet than a notebook.

The Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Extreme is the powerful multimedia all-rounder among its ThinkPad brethren, and it comes with a 9750H 6-core CPU and Nvidia’s 1650 Max-Q GPU. Acer’s Swift 3 SF313 is a representative of the ultra-mobile conventional clamshell design segment. The Asus ZenBook Flip 15 is a well-equipped GTX 1050-powered multimedia convertible. Another laptop found at the top of the list is the Huawei MateBook D 14 – the first AMD-based contender.

Outside the top 10 we find the Acer Swift 5 SF514, a notebook with an extremely low weight of just 943 g (2.08 lbs) despite a comparatively large 14-inch display. Lenovo’s IdeaPad S740-15 can be considered the “normal” version of the X1 Extreme, and it offers a more than adequate multimedia performance thanks to its Coffee Lake CPU and its GeForce GTX 1650 GPU. Acer’s ConceptD 9 Pro is an exciting mix aimed primarily at multimedia and graphics professionals. combining an extraordinary display concept with powerful hardware. A laptop found mostly in professional rather than home user environments is Lenovo’s ThinkPad T490, a 14-inch business and corporate staple.

Lenovo’s Yoga C740-15 is a 15-inch convertible that can be used in many different scenarios thanks to its 360-degree hinge, as is HP’s Spectre X360 15. Another laptop on our list of highest-scoring devices is Apple's MacBook Air 2019. Its most recent refresh brought about more performance as well as a significantly improved display. Unfortunately, it also came with a hefty price increase. A laptop that did very well in our test was the Asus ZenBook 15 UX534FTC, another 15.6-inch multimedia all-rounder.

Last but not least there is the Asus Zephyrus G14. It is one of the first notebooks ever to incorporate an AMD Ryzen 9 4900HS processor thereby offering eight cores in an 18-mm thin 14-inch notebook. Its performance is simply breathtaking. Even much larger and heavier gaming notebooks with Intel’s i9 CPU are incapable of keeping up with the compact G14.

Our Favorites – Editor’s Choice Awards Q1 2020

Based on the ratings for the time period we conduct an internal editorial vote for the Editor’s Choice Award. The award will go to those contenders that stand out due to their total package, their top performance in specific categories, or devices that offer an outstanding price-performance ratio representing an attractive purchase option in their respective category.

Huawei MateBook D 14 (2020)

With a score of 87% the Huawei MateBook D 14 only barely missed the “Very Good” rating. At a price of around $700 it also offers an outstanding and exceptional price-performance ratio. The MateBook D 14 is a 14-inch aluminum laptop with a matte FHD display. Inside we find AMD’s Ryzen 5 3500U, which is on a par with Intel’s current 10th gen i5 and i7 U-series processors. Thus, performance losses compared to a current Intel-equipped configuration are not to be expected at all. Among others, the fast and large 512 GB SSD that the base model for $700 is equipped with is one of the core components ensuring excellent overall performance. If you are looking for an affordable, robust, and portable notebook without having excessively high expectations you will be hard pressed to go wrong with the Huawei MateBook D 14.

Acer Swift 5 SF514-54T

The Acer Swift 5 SF514-54T scored a decent 86% in our test. Its highlight is no doubt its incredibly low weight. At just 943 g the 15-mm thick notebook is 200-300 g lighter than its competitors. This may not seem like a lot at first glance but try carrying that extra weight around all day and you will definitely notice the difference. Just like the MateBook D 14 the Swift 5 features a matte FHD panel offering a decent brightness, high contrast ratio, and accurate colors. On the inside we find a powerful Intel Ice Lake CPU. The fact that it was incapable of utilizing its full potential should remain unnoticeable during regular everyday use, for example when browsing the web or performing rather mundane office tasks. Thanks to a 56 Wh battery the Acer Swift 5 lasted for around 8 hours in our two real-world battery tests (video playback and Wi-Fi). It starts at just shy of $1,000, and the device also includes a fast and spacious 512 GB SSD.

Dell XPS 13 9300

Dell’s XPS 13 9300 (2020) is yet another ultra-portable laptop that has been awarded an Editor’s Choice Award. The 2020 refresh signified an extensive upgrade for the popular subnotebook, which left a mark on the device’s price as well. The case was improved in terms of quality and redesigned to incorporate an even larger display while retaining its outside dimensions. Instead of the previously used 16:9 panel the new XPS 13 comes with a 16:10 display. Our particular review unit’s display was matte and ran at a native resolution of 1920x1200. The XPS 13 2020’s highlights include its extremely bright high-contrast display, its solid battery life of 12-14 hours in real-world situations, and its mostly quiet fan. Dell also finally addressed the coil whine issues that previous models were so notorious for. However, the premium device comes at a hefty premium price, starting at around $1,500.

J. Simon Leitner
Editor of the original article: J. Simon Leitner - Founder, Editorial Director
After my studies at the Vienna Technical University I dedicated myself completely to the project Notebookcheck as a co-founder. Since Commodore C64 and Atari 1040 ST, computers have been an integral part of my daily activities. Beside new technologies, especially electric mobility, my interest also belongs to architecture and construction engineering.
