Lenovo ThinkPad L13 Yoga review: Business convertible with good equipment

Hot convertible! Lenovo promises a business convertible at an entry-level price for the ThinkPad L13 Yoga, relying on Comet Lake SoCs from Intel. Find out what else the device has to offer and whether a purchase is worthwhile in this review.

As the successor to the ThinkPad L390 Yoga, the Lenovo ThinkPad L13 Yoga takes up the legacy. Visually, the new convertible is a ThinkPad through and through. The L series still attracts attention with a low purchase price. So does our test device, which has solid equipment for 1,119 Euros (~$1,210) and it comes with good business features.

Case & Connectivity

Visually, the ThinkPad L13 Yoga is clearly marked with the distinctive ThinkPad logos. Matte black on all surfaces looks pretty chic at first glance, but when working, fingerprints are also quickly visible on all surfaces. Lenovo makes no compromises when it comes to the choice of materials for the new ThinkPad L13 Yoga and uses fiberglass-reinforced plastic, which is light yet very stable. The base can be twisted a bit, but this is limited. The same applies to the display lid. However, this offers somewhat better strength and absorbs recurrent forces very well. The convertible is equipped with stable 360-degree hinges. However, these cannot completely prevent teetering in laptop mode.

In size comparison, the ThinkPad L13 Yoga is slightly larger than the Yoga C740. Nevertheless, our test sample is relatively space-saving in comparison. The same applies to the weight, because at 1.4 kg our ThinkPad L13 Yoga is also based on the Yoga C740. In terms of connections, nothing has to be left out. A total of four USB ports should be sufficient for most users. The L13 Yoga also offers a card reader, although it is only a micro SD card reader. The external communication in our test device is handled by the Intel Wireless AC-9560 including Bluetooth 5 support. There is also an optional faster Wi-Fi 6 module. Speaking of optional, the RJ-45 adapter is only available separately and is unfortunately not included in the scope of delivery.

Input devices

Lenovo installs a very good chiclet keyboard in the ThinkPad L13 Yoga, which also has a two-level backlight. The keys have a short drop and a clearly noticeable pressure point, which is accompanied by a slightly dampened stroke. At the same time, the feeling of writing is by no means vague, which will suit frequent writers. On the right side, some letters and special keys are slightly smaller than the rest, which takes some getting used to at the beginning.

With the ClickPad, Lenovo relies on the tried and tested model that we already know from the Lenovo ThinkPad L390 Yoga. The input area is generous but works somewhat inaccurately in the corners. If you are experienced with it, you can also use the trackpoint to whizz the mouse pointer across the screen. The 13.3-inch touch screen also serves as another input medium. Inputs can be made here with the finger or using the supplied ThinkPad Pen Pro.

The Lenovo ThinkPad L13 Yoga is equipped with a 13.3-inch IPS touch display. There are no alternative display options for this device. The built-in panel offers 1920x1080 pixels, which corresponds to a pixel density of 166 ppi. According to the data sheet, the screen should have a brightness of 300 nits. The manufacturer specifies 800:1 for the contrast. Both values were clearly exceeded in our measurements. At 336 cd/m², the luminosity is significantly better than stated, even though it only suffices for second place. The HP Envy x360 has an even brighter display. However, the tide turns when it comes to contrast and our test sample can top the comparison here with 1,889:1.

Light clouding is visible in dark scenes but is hardly noticeable in everyday life. There is no point deduction for the high PWM frequency, because this should not result in restrictions even for sensitive people.

Display Response Times

Display response times show how fast the screen is able to change from one color to the next. Slow response times can lead to afterimages and can cause moving objects to appear blurry (ghosting). Gamers of fast-paced 3D titles should pay special attention to fast response times.
       Response Time Black to White
28 ms ... rise ↗ and fall ↘ combined↗ 15.6 ms rise
↘ 12.4 ms fall
The screen shows relatively slow response rates in our tests and may be too slow for gamers.
In comparison, all tested devices range from 0.1 (minimum) to 240 (maximum) ms. » 67 % of all devices are better.
This means that the measured response time is worse than the average of all tested devices (21.6 ms).
Response Time 50% Grey to 80% Grey
40 ms ... rise ↗ and fall ↘ combined↗ 21.6 ms rise
↘ 18.4 ms fall
The screen shows slow response rates in our tests and will be unsatisfactory for gamers.
In comparison, all tested devices range from 0.2 (minimum) to 636 (maximum) ms. » 55 % of all devices are better.
This means that the measured response time is worse than the average of all tested devices (33.9 ms).

Screen Flickering / PWM (Pulse-Width Modulation)

To dim the screen, some notebooks will simply cycle the backlight on and off in rapid succession - a method called Pulse Width Modulation (PWM) . This cycling frequency should ideally be undetectable to the human eye. If said frequency is too low, users with sensitive eyes may experience strain or headaches or even notice the flickering altogether.
Screen flickering / PWM detected 25000 Hz ≤ 50 % brightness setting

The display backlight flickers at 25000 Hz (worst case, e.g., utilizing PWM) Flickering detected at a brightness setting of 50 % and below. There should be no flickering or PWM above this brightness setting.

The frequency of 25000 Hz is quite high, so most users sensitive to PWM should not notice any flickering.

In comparison: 53 % of all tested devices do not use PWM to dim the display. If PWM was detected, an average of 18110 (minimum: 5 - maximum: 3846000) Hz was measured.

Lenovo ThinkPad L13 Yoga vs AdobeRGB (64.1%)
Lenovo ThinkPad L13 Yoga vs AdobeRGB (64.1%)

The very good contrast ratio ensures a rich display of colors and even dark areas are not covered by a strong gray veil. In addition, Lenovo seems to have delivered the display of the ThinkPad L13 Yoga pre-calibrated, because the Delta E 2000 values of the grayscale and colors are already very low and significantly better than those of the competition. After our calibration with the professional CalMAN software and the X-Rite-i1-Pro-2 spectrophotometer, the Delta-E-2000 values were even lower. The ThinkPad L13 Yoga also collects important rating points for the color-space coverage. At 99.6%, the sRGB color space is almost completely covered. With the extended AdobeRGB, coverage is still sufficient at 64.1%. The competition cannot keep up with these values. Thus, the Lenovo ThinkPad L13 Yoga is also well suited for photo-editing.

The reflective touch display of the ThinkPad L13 Yoga is a downer in the works when used outdoors. Despite the anti-reflective coating, it is difficult to see anything on the display in sunshine. Working in the shade is only possible with slight restrictions, as well. The display also has some weaknesses in the viewing-angle test, because all four corner images show slight color changes. With normal use there are no disadvantages.

Intel Core i5-10210U

The built in Intel Core i5-10210U works with a TDP of 15 watts and offers four native computing cores. The SoC is allowed to temporarily use up to 51 watts under load. However, the Lenovo ThinkPad L13 Yoga did not get the full performance out of the SoC in the CPU tests. The Lenovo Yoga C740 is much faster with the same SoC.

Since the turbo utilization is not very high, the performance drop in the Cinebench R15 multi loop is accordingly relatively low. For further comparisons and benchmarks we refer to our CPU comparison table.

Graphics card

The Intel UHD Graphics 620 is used as the graphics unit for the ThinkPad L13 Yoga. There are no alternative solutions for the new convertible. A look at the performance shows that our test model performs better here than the class average. However, our ThinkPad L13 Yoga is clearly beaten by the HP Envy x360 with an AMD APU. For further comparisons and benchmarks we refer to our GPU comparison table.

Conversely, the defensive fan control ensures high case temperatures under load. We measured 62.9 °C on the bottom. This is too much and working on your lap can be uncomfortable. The SoC even heats up to 98 °C during the stress test. Nevertheless, the Intel Core i5-10210U continues to work above the base clock of 1.6 GHz. The 3D performance is not noticeably affected by the continuous load.

In review: Lenovo ThinkPad L13 Yoga, test device provided by

The Lenovo ThinkPad L13 Yoga inherits the traits of the Lenovo ThinkPad L390. However, the new Comet Lake SoC was unable to achieve any noticeable increase in performance in the test. But the newer device had advantages in terms of battery life, even though the increase was only in the single-digit percentage range.

Basically, the Lenovo ThinkPad L13 Yoga is a very well-made business convertible with many features. An IR camera, fingerprint scanner or smart card reader are important options when it comes to a business device. The ThinkPad L13 Yoga brings all of this and combines it in a compact and stable housing. As is known, the L13 Yoga also offers a very successful keyboard. Nevertheless, the ThinkPad Pen Pro is part of the scope of delivery as an input medium and don't forget the long warranty period of 36 months.

The Lenovo ThinkPad L13 Yoga offers good specifications at an acceptable price.

Despite the good measurements, the opinions about the display can be ambiguous, because the low PWM frequency could put some users off. If you don't have any problems with that, the Lenovo ThinkPad L13 Yoga offers users a modern convertible, which can also be used for photo-editing.
