HP Pavilion x360 14 Review: 14-inch convertible with optional pen input

Versatile. The HP Pavilion x360 14-dh1153ng attracts attention with its Comet Lake processor, Intel Optane storage and a backlit keyboard. The IPS touchscreen display can also be used with an HP Pen (1MR94AA, not included in scope of delivery).

The Pavilion x360 14 is a compact 14-inch Windows convertible that is powered by a Core i5-10210U quad core processor. The device might look familiar to many readers as its design is very similar to that of its predecessor. The configuration we are looking at today is available for around $700. Other configurations are available with prices starting around $350. We will be comparing our test unit to the Lenovo Ideapad C340-14API, the Asus Vivobook Flip 14 TP412UA, the Acer Spin 3 SP314-51 and the Asus Chromebook Flip C434TA.

Case - HP has decided to mix materials for its Pavilion

The case of the Pavilion is made mainly of plastic. Only the top of the base unit is metal. The device uses two colors: black (top and bottom of the base unit and display frame) and silver (back of the display cover, narrow sides of the base unit). The device looks very similar to its predecessor, the Pavilion x360 14-cd0002ng, which we tested in 2019, although there are some differences. Our current test unit no longer has a volume rocker and the fingerprint reader has moved from the side of the device to the wrist rest.

The convertible's workmanship is very good. The gap dimensions are uniform and we did not notice any rough edges. However, we do need to criticize the device's stability. The base unit is too light and can be warped too easily. A device that is marketed as being portable should have more to offer here. The display cover has average stiffness. Pressure on the back of the display cover is visible on the screen. The hinges are nice and tight but still enable users to open the device using only one hand.

The dimension and weight of this convertible is very similar to its competition.

Connectivity - the Pavilion convertible has a Type-C USB port

The device has three USB ports (2x type A, 1x type C) that all support the USB 3.2 Gen 1 standard. The Type-C port does not support DisplayPort via USB-C nor PowerDelivery 3.0. We would have at least expected the latter function on a device that is made to be mobile. An external monitor can be connected via HDMI.

SDCardreader

SD cards can be fully inserted into the storage card reader, which is also one of the faster models available. It reaches a maximum transfer rate of 83.2 MB/s when copying large blocks of data. 250 JPG files (each around 5 MB each) are transferred at a speed of 77.3 MB/s. We used our reference card (Toshiba Exceria Pro SDXC 64 GB UHS-II) to test the card reader.

Communication

The Wi-Fi module has a Realtek chip (8821CE). It supports the Wi-Fi standards 802.11 a/b/g/n as well as the faster ac standard. The transfer speeds we measured under ideal conditions (no other Wi-Fi devices in the vicinity, short distance between notebook and server PC) are average as the chip only supports 1x1 MIMO technology. The convertible doesn't have an Ethernet port, so users will have to use a USB adapter if necessary.

Webcam

The webcam creates images with a maximum resolution of 1280 x 720 pixels. The results are rather grainy and too light.

Accessories

The Pavilion comes with the usual accessories (warranty information, quick-start guide).

Maintenance

The convertible does not have a maintenance hatch, so users will need to remove the bottom cover to get inside. This involves removing four screws, two of which are hidden below the two back rubber pads. These pads can be removed, although this is a tricky procedure as they could tear. After removing the pads and screws, you can lift off the cover with the help of a spatula or putty knife.

Warranty

HP only gives its Pavilion a one-year warranty. Buyers can extend this warranty to two or three years for the price of $80 - $100.

Input Devices - the Pavilion x360 can be used with an Active Pen

Keyboard

Hewlett Packard has equipped its convertible with a backlit chiclet keyboard. The flat, smooth keys have a short travel and a significant pressure point. The actuation force could be a little stronger for our taste. The keyboard also gives way slightly while typing, although this wasn't particularly bothersome. The keyboard backlighting can be controlled via a functional key and is available at two brightness levels. Overall, this HP keyboard is suitable for everyday use.

Touchpad

The multi-touch clickpad takes up around 11.1 x 5.6 cm (~4.4 x 2.2 in), which offers sufficient space for gesture control. The pad responds to inputs in the corners and the smooth surface enables good gliding. The pad offers short travel and has a clear pressure point.

Input device
Input device

Touchscreen

The touchscreen supports 10 pressure points and responds quickly to inputs. We did not encounter any issues while using it. The screen can be operated with your fingers or with the HP Pen that can be purchased separately (1MR94AA, available for around $50).

HP Pen

Display - IPS included

The 14-inch touchscreen display of the HP convertible has a native resolution of 1920 x 1080 pixels. While the contrast (1055:1) is good, the display could offer more brightness (238.3 cd/m²). Not least considering its price range. We generally consider brightness values above 300 cd/m² to be good.

Unfortunately, the display uses PWM at a frequency level of 192 Hz for brightness levels up to around 90 percent. This frequency is rather low and can lead to headaches and/or eye problems for sensitive people.

The screen has a fairly decent color display ex-works, but doesn't reach the ideal value (DeltaE below 3) with a measured DeltaE 2000 color deviation of 5.43. The display does not have a blue cast. Calibrating the display only offers minor improvements such as making the grayscales more balanced. The display does not cover the RGB color spaces (37.3 percent of AdobeRGB and 58.4 percent of sRGB).

Display Response Times

Display response times show how fast the screen is able to change from one color to the next. Slow response times can lead to afterimages and can cause moving objects to appear blurry (ghosting). Gamers of fast-paced 3D titles should pay special attention to fast response times.
       Response Time Black to White

In comparison, all tested devices range from 0.1 (minimum) to 240 (maximum) ms. » 87 % of all devices are better.
This means that the measured response time is worse than the average of all tested devices (21.6 ms).
Response Time 50% Grey to 80% Grey

In comparison, all tested devices range from 0.2 (minimum) to 636 (maximum) ms. » 69 % of all devices are better.
This means that the measured response time is worse than the average of all tested devices (33.9 ms).

Screen Flickering / PWM (Pulse-Width Modulation)

To dim the screen, some notebooks will simply cycle the backlight on and off in rapid succession - a method called Pulse Width Modulation (PWM) . This cycling frequency should ideally be undetectable to the human eye. If said frequency is too low, users with sensitive eyes may experience strain or headaches or even notice the flickering altogether.
Screen flickering / PWM detected 192 Hz ≤ 90 % brightness setting

The display backlight flickers at 192 Hz (worst case, e.g., utilizing PWM) Flickering detected at a brightness setting of 90 % and below. There should be no flickering or PWM above this brightness setting.

The frequency of 192 Hz is relatively low, so sensitive users will likely notice flickering and experience eyestrain at the stated brightness setting and below.

In comparison: 53 % of all tested devices do not use PWM to dim the display. If PWM was detected, an average of 18110 (minimum: 5 - maximum: 3846000) Hz was measured.

HP has equipped its convertible with an IPS panel with stable viewing angles. This means that the screen can be read from every position. Due to the low display brightness and reflective surface, however, the device can only be used outdoors on cloudy days or in the shade.

Processor

HP has equipped the convertible with a Core i5-10210U quad core processor that is based on Intel's Comet Lake architecture. The ULV model (TDP 15 watts) clocks at a base rate of 1.6 GHz. This can be increased via the turbo to around 3.9 GHz (four cores) 4.1 GHz (two cores) or 4.2 GHz (one core).

At first, the processor worked at 3.3 - 3.5 GHz during our multi-thread CineBench tests. The clock rate then dropped to 2.3 - 2.4 GHz. It remained at 3.4 - 4.2 GHz during the single-thread tests. The performance is not impacted by the device running on battery.

Multi thread
Multi thread
Single thread
Single thread

We ran the multi-thread CineBench R15 benchmark in a loop for at least 30 minutes to find out whether the device is able to keep up its turbo boost under continuous load. The results drop from the first to the second round and then remain constant. The CPU turbo is used moderately.

System Performance

The system runs smoothly and we encountered no issues. The HP notebook offers more than sufficient performance for office and internet applications and the PCMark benchmark results are good. Performance could still be increased by upgrading RAM to dual channel mode. This would require installing a second RAM module.

Storage Device

Hewlett Packard uses Intel Optane for this device, which consists of two NVMe SSDs (512 GB, 32 GB) from Intel. Both SSDs are installed on the same module (M.2 2280). The 32-GB-SSD is based on Intel's ultra fast 3D XPoint storage and acts as fast cache storage for the traditional 512-GB SSD (QLC storage). The cache is supposed to speed up start and boot operations as well as searching for files and storing large blocks of data.

The transfer rates are good overall, but won't knock you off your feet. For example, the PM981 SSD from Samsung usually offers significantly higher transfer rates without the need for an additional cache SSD. The Optane combination only shows real advantages during random access operations.

The convertible offers sufficient space for an additional 2.5-inch storage device. However, our device did not include the SATA connector nor the drive caddy that would be necessary for installing one.

The storage device uses Optane.

Graphics Performance

Our test unit does not include a dedicated GPU, although there are some configurations available with a GeForce MX130. The graphics output in our device is taken care of by Intel's integrated UHD Graphics 620. This GPU supports DirectX 12 and reaches speeds of up to 1100 MHz. The results in the 3DMark benchmarks are average for this GPU. Upgrading the device to dual-channel mode (=installing a second RAM module) would improve performance.

Gaming Performance

The hardware of the Pavilion can display some of the games in our database smoothly at low resolution and low quality settings. The frame rate could be improved by installing a second RAM module (to activate dual-channel mode). Users still couldn't play more demanding games such as Speed Heat or Star Wars Jedi Fallen Order.

Temperature

The Pavilion during the stress test
The Pavilion during the stress test

Our stress test (Prime95 and FurMark running for at least 1 hour) has the same results when running on battery and on mains. The processor and GPU clock at 3.3 - 3.5 GHz and 650 - 700 MHz respectively for just under a minute. After that, the CPU clock rate drops to 1.1 GHz while the GPU clock rate remains at around 850 - 900 MHz. The speeds remain the same for the remainder of the test. The stress test is an extreme scenario that will not occur during everyday use. We use it to test whether the system remains stable under maximum load.

You can't really say that the Pavilion heats up. We measured temperatures in the mid 30s (around 95 Fahrenheit) during the stress test and there were no issues with heat development during everyday use.

Speaker

The stereo speakers are positioned above the keyboard, underneath the perforated cover. They produce a decent sound although it lacks base. In addition, the maximum volume is comparatively low. For a better audio experience, we would recommend using headphones or external speakers.

Battery Life

The Pavilion reached a runtime of 6:17 h during our practical Wi-Fi test. This test simulates the load of browsing the web with the profile set to "balanced" and display brightness at 150 cd/m². Our video test lasts 8:45 h. During this test, we play the short film Big Buck Bunny (H.264 encoded, 1920 x 1080 pixels) in a loop to find out how long the battery can play videos for. The network modules are disabled for this test, the profile is set to energy saving and the display brightness is reduced to 150 cd/m².

HP's Pavilion x360 14 is a compact convertible with a 14-inch screen. The included Comet Lake quad-core processor offers sufficient processing performance for office and internet applications. Unfortunately, HP does not make full use of the device's potential as the RAM runs in Single-Channel mode. Fortunately, users can activate Dual-Channel mode themselves by installing a second RAM module.

While the HP Pavilion x360 14-dh1153ng is a decent convertible, it couldn't convince us entirely. HP seems to have given up half way through.

The device hardly heats up at any level of load and usually works quietly. Intel Optane (512 GS SSD + 32 GB SSD) ensures a fast and smooth system but is not really an important selling point. Some of the competition's standard SSDs offer faster transfer rates even without the additional SSD cache. The backlit keyboard is suitable for everyday use.

The battery life is decent to good. The device reached runtimes between 6 and 9 hours during our practical test (Wi-Fi, video). Depending on the area of use, this might be a little tight for use at work or school and we would recommend taking the AC adapter along to be on the safe side. Unfortunately, the Pavilion's Type-C USB slot does not support PowerDelivery. That would provide a universal way to recharge the convertible, which would be useful for a portable device.

The IPS touchscreen display has stable viewing angles and good contrast. The brightness is low for a convertible of this price range. The touchscreen can be operated with your fingers or using the HP Pen (1MR94AA, available for around $50).

If buyers are mainly interested in a device that supports pen input, they might want to take a look at other Pavilion devices that are compatible with the pen on the HP website. There are several more affordable models that are equipped with a Pentium Gold 5405U processor. Users who do not require such a high-powered device might be able to save a little money by choosing one of these.
