HP ZBook Studio 16 G11 workstation review: Light with performance done right
Upgraded processor and RTX Ada graphics.
One of HP's lightest 16-inch workstations gets new processor options for noticeably faster performance than before. Otherwise, this is visually the same design as the ZBook Studio 16 G9 or G10 for an essentially identical user experience.Allen Ngo 👁 Published 🇫🇷 🇪🇸 ...
Verdict — Lighter Than Expected For A 16-inch Workstation
The ZBook Studio 16 G11 excels at portability and build quality despite thinness and large 16-inch screen size. Professionals who want something light enough to carry around without sacrificing display size or too much performance will find a lot to like about the Studio 16 G11 especially now that the new GPU options are noticeably faster and more efficient than what was available on the G9 model.
Unfortunately, the system still suffers from many of the same flaws as the preceding G10 or G9 models since they all share the same chassis or skeleton. The blurry 1 MP webcam and lack of privacy shutter, for example, are indicative of an aging design. Other factors like core running temperatures and battery life are warmer and shorter than we would like, respectively, while the CPU upgrade from Alder Lake-H to Meteor Lake-H isn't nearly as large as the GPU upgrade. Users requiring additional graphics power faster than the RTX 3000 Ada will have to look at thicker alternatives like the ZBook Fury 16 series which can be configured with RTX 5000 Ada options.
We should also note that we experienced several freezing issues on our test unit. It may be worth double-checking your unit upon purchasing for any faulty behavior.

Price and Availability
A lesser SKU with the Core Ultra 7 and RTX 2000 Ada is available on Amazon for $3200. Additional SKUs are available directly from HP.

(December 2, 2024 update: OLED SKUs are available from select third-party retailers. However, they may not be available at HP.com)
The last time we reviewed the ZBook Studio 16 series was the G9 model back in 2022. For 2024, the latest model is now the G11 equipped with both faster Intel Meteor Lake CPU and Nvidia Ada Lovelace GPU options to replace the Alder Lake and Ampere options on the older Studio 16 versions.
Our test unit is the highest-end configuration with the Core Ultra 9 185H vPro CPU, RTX 3000 Ada GPU, and 2400p 120 Hz IPS display for approximately $2800 USD. Other SKUs start with the Core Ultra 7 155H, integrated Arc graphics, GeForce RTX 4070, or 1200p display instead as described on the official HP product page.
Alternatives to the ZBook Studio 16 G11 include other 16-inch mobile workstations like the Lenovo ThinkPad P16 Gen 2, Dell Precision 5690, or MSI CreatorPro Z16P.
More HP reviews:
Specifications
Case
The ZBook Studio 16 G11 utilizes the same chassis as the two-year old ZBook Studio 16 G9. Despite its age, this is still a strong design most notable for its thinness and portability. The MSI CreatorPro Z16P or Dell Precision 5690, for example, are each larger and noticeably heavier by at least 400 to 500 grams.
Connectivity
While port options have not changed, the integrated MicroSD reader on our unit was broken and so we were unable to test its transfer rate performance.
Communication
Wireless has been upgraded from the MediaTek Wi-Fi 6E MT7922 to the Intel BE200 to support both Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 5.4.
Webcam
Unfortunately, the webcam remains 720p or only 1 MP whereas the vast majority of other laptops have already moved away from 1 MP options.

Maintenance
The bottom panel is easily removable with just a Torx screwdriver. HP provides an official servicing video for many of its models unlike other major manufacturers.
Sustainability
HP uses recycled plastics and metals for all of its laptops manufactured since 2022. The proportion of recycled to non-recycled materials, however, varies by model.
The packaging is mostly cardboard and paper with some plastic wrapping for the laptop and AC adapter.
Warranty
A three-year limited manufacturer warranty applies if purchased in the US.
Display
HP has switched 4K panel providers from BOE on the Studio 16 G9 to AU Optronics for our Studio 16 G11. Their core attributes are otherwise essentially identical in terms of refresh rate (120 Hz) and color coverage (100% DCI-P3). Brightness, however, is dimmer this time around by almost 30 percent and HDR continues to be unsupported. A slightly brighter 500 nit option is available to address this.

Performance
Testing Conditions
We set Windows and MyHP to Performance mode prior to running the benchmarks below.
Processor
Although not as fast as the adjacent Raptor Lake-HX series, the Meteor Lake-based Core Ultra 9 185H is still a slight upgrade over the Core i7-12800H in the ZBook Studio 16 G9 by about 10 percent when it comes to multi-threaded tasks. Unfortunately, it cannot sustain Turbo Boost clock rates for very long despite the relatively large 16-inch form factor.

Stress Test
The limited Turbo Boost potential of the system becomes apparent when taking a closer look at its vitals in real-time. When running Prime95 stress, for example, the CPU would almost instantly reach 89 C during the first few seconds of the test. It would then swiftly drop from 3.3 GHz and 89 W to just 2.3 GHz and 70 W in order to keep core temperature below 100 C.
CPU and GPU temperature when running Cyberpunk 2077 would stabilize at 68 C and 70 C, respectively, compared to 75 C and 62 C on the more powerful Dell Precision 5690.

GPU Performance
The newer GPU is one of the biggest reasons to upgrade from the ZBook Studio 16 G9 to the ZBook Studio 16 G11. Our RTX 3000 Ada performs nearly 2x faster than the RTX A2000 before accounting for any ray-tracing acceleration features.

System Noise
Fan noise and behavior have not changed significantly from the older ZBook Studio 16 G9. When running heavy loads like games, for example, fan noise would stabilize at around 46 to 48 dB(A). However, we're able to record a louder maximum of 53 dB(A) on the newer G11 model if the CPU and GPU are equally stressed.
