Verdict - Stunning screen, but somewhat disappointing performance
The new Asus ROG Xbox Ally X20 is a significant upgrade compared to last year's model, but at the same time a bit disappointing. The changes to the chassis with rubberized grips, improved sticks and buttons are great and it also looks amazing with the semi-translucent chassis and yellow/golden accents. It simply feels like a premium device. The biggest change, however, is the new and larger 7.4-inch OLED screen. The image quality is simply stunning and it improves the overall gaming experience significantly. We are also happy to report that the battery runtime did not suffer and you can expect between 2-4 hours of gaming depending on the power profile.
The connectivity is also great overall and you now get a significantly faster microSD-Express card reader. The big issue is the processor, because you still get the familiar Ryzen Z2 Extreme (Zen 5) from last year's model. The gaming performance is therefore pretty much identical and it cannot keep up with the Intel Arc G3 Extreme, which is almost 30 % faster. The price has increased to $1299, but it is still much cheaper than the MSI Claw 8 EX AI+ with the Intel SoC.

Specifications
Case, Connectivity and Input Devices
The basic chassis construction is similar to last year's model, which means the ROG Xbox Ally X20 is once again an extremely comfortable gaming handheld thanks to the large grips. They are now slightly rubberized at the back, so it feels even better to hold, even though we are not sure how the surfaces will cope with hundreds of hours of gaming. Asus also improved the sticks (now magnetic TMR) as well as buttons and they feel amazing. The sticks are super precise and perfectly weighted, just like the triggers. The buttons are nice and tactile, the only exception on our test unit is the d-pad. While it is tactile as well, our particular unit was a bit loose on the left side, so there is a bit of travel before you actually hit the button. The chassis is now slightly translucent, which looks great with the golden buttons and the yellow LED lighting for the sticks. The new Xbox button is illuminated, but honestly pretty redundant, as it opens the control center just like the button next to it.
You can still replace the SSD (be aware of the cable that runs to the rear cover) and you now get a speedy microSD-Express card reader with transfer speeds of 800 MB/s. Wi-Fi 7 is not supported, but the Wi-Fi 6E module still performs very well. Our test unit was bundled with the XREAL R1 glasses, but we will have a closer look at it in a separate article.

Display - Stunning OLED
This is the game changer, because the new 7.4-inch OLED touchscreen with VRR support and 120 Hz (1920 x 1080 pixels) simply looks stunning and transforms the whole gaming experience. While the previous IPS panel was good for gaming, you do not want to go back once you have experienced the OLED model. Image quality is superb and brightness levels are also amazing, both for SDR (more than 600 nits) and especially HDR (more than 1500 nits). Response times are blazing fast and even though there is PWM flickering, the behavior was a bit strange with a very low amplitude, so it should not be an issue in practice. You also get very accurate color profiles for sRGB and P3.

There should be no flickering or PWM above this brightness setting. The frequency of 120 Hz is very low, so the flickering may cause eyestrain and headaches after extended use. Performance - Ryzen Z2 Extreme
Testing Conditions
Asus offers the familiar power modes (see table below). We performed our benchmarks in Turbo mode on mains. Asus allocates 8 GB RAM to the iGPU by default.
| Power mode | TDP | Cyberpunk 2077 1080p Medium | Battery runtime gaming @150 nits | fan noise |
|---|---|---|---|---|

| Turbo (plugged in) | 55/35 W | 43.1 fps | 40.2 dB(A) |
Processor, System & SSD Performance
The CPU performance of the Ryzen Z2 Extreme is still very good and even better compared to the Intel Arc G3 Extreme. The Ally X20 is a very responsive system overall thanks to the fast PCIe 4.0 SSD. We did not notice any stability issues, either, and the integrated control center works very well.

GPU and Gaming Performance
The major issue of the new Ally X20 is the unchanged Radeon 890M iGPU. It simply cannot keep up with the performance of the Intel Arc B390 iGPU in the MSI Claw EX AI+, which offers about 20-30 % more gaming performance and also supports features like frame generation.

Temperature
Surface temperatures are absolutely no problem since the grips hardly warm up at all and the hot air is dissipated at the top of the chassis, where there is usually no skin contact.
(+) The maximum temperature on the upper side is 39.7 °C / 103 F, compared to the average of 37.8 °C / 100 F, ranging from 26.6 to 55 °C for the class Handheld / UMPC.
(+) The bottom heats up to a maximum of 38.9 °C / 102 F, compared to the average of 36.6 °C / 98 F
(+) In idle usage, the average temperature for the upper side is 27.9 °C / 82 F, compared to the device average of 32.8 °C / 91 F.
(±) The palmrests and touchpad can get very hot to the touch with a maximum of 37.9 °C / 100.2 F.
(-) The average temperature of the palmrest area of similar devices was 32.4 °C / 90.3 F (-5.5 °C / -9.9 F).

Power Consumption and Battery Life
Our EU test sample was shipped without a PSU, and we recommend a 100 Watt charger to be on the safe side. If you play plugged-in in Turbo mode, the consumption can reach up to 85 Watts for 10 seconds, before it eventually levels off at ~58 Watts. We are happy to report that the switch to the larger OLED screen did not affect the battery runtimes, as the results for our Wi-Fi test and gaming tests are pretty much identical to last year's ROG Xbox Ally X.

This is how Notebookcheck is testing
Every year, Notebookcheck independently reviews hundreds of laptops and smartphones using standardized procedures to ensure that all results are comparable. We have continuously developed our test methods for around 20 years and set industry standards in the process. In our test labs, high-quality measuring equipment is utilized by experienced technicians and editors. These tests involve a multi-stage validation process. Our complex rating system is based on hundreds of well-founded measurements and benchmarks, which maintains objectivity. Further information on our test methods can be found here.
