Verdict — Looks And Feels Almost Like An EliteBook
One of the best things about the MacBook Neo was that it upped the ante for what consumers can now expect from affordable laptops. Dell would follow up soon after with the 13-inch XPS Wildcat which earned a lot of praise for its high-end looks and great display considering the low entry price. Similarly, the HP OmniBook 5 14 is easily one of the company's best laptops in the sub $1000 category right now.
Simply stating that the OmniBook 5 14 is ultrathin and lightweight doesn't do it any justice as it feels and looks surprisingly good in the hand for such an inexpensive system. Even the cheapest $700 configuration comes with 16 GB of RAM and an OLED P3 touchscreen which is more than what we can say for the XPS 13 Wildcat. For general schoolwork, streaming, traveling, and web browsing, the new OmniBook is tough to beat for the price.
Arguably the biggest drawback to the system isn't related to the HP hardware at all but to the Intel Wildcat CPU itself. Performance is built around simpler tasks like those mentioned above and so any graphics editing or local gaming would be beyond what the system is capable of. Pricier laptops with Panther Lake or Lunar Lake handily outperform the OmniBook 5 14 on essentially all fronts.
Additionally, users should keep in mind that the base 1200p OLED display is on the cheaper side since it is dimmer than average, lacks HDR support, and is only 60 Hz whereas the base XPS 13 Wildcat is much brighter and at a faster 120 Hz refresh rate. Upgrading to the 1800p OLED configuration addresses these shortcomings for an extra $120. The nicer 1800p option is arguably worthwhile over the Core 7 350 CPU upgrade which would only boost performance by an extra 10 percent for around the same cost.
Pros
Cons
Price and Availability
HP is currently shipping the OmniBook 5 14 for $800 as configured in this review.
The OmniBook 5 14 with Intel Wildcat is HP's latest shot at creating an affordable yet attractive Windows laptop in the same vein as the MacBook Neo.
Our test unit is an entry-level configuration with the Core 5 320 CPU, 16 GB of soldered RAM, and 1200p OLED touchscreen for approximately $700 to $800. Lesser SKUs may come with less storage while higher-end SKUs ship with the Core 7 350 and 1800p OLED instead.
Competitors include other Wildcat-based laptops like the Dell XPS 13 or Lenovo IdeaPad Slim 3 15 all targeting the under $1000 price range.

Specifications
Case
The four color options include the typical Smoke Silver and Starlit Blue plus the more colorful Peony Pink and Soft Honeydew. The chassis consists of recycled metal for the outer cover, keyboard frame, and base for a single-tone unibody-like impression.
Connectivity
Port positioning is less than ideal since there are no USB-C ports along the right edge.
Communication
WLAN supports up to Wi-Fi 6E and not Wi-Fi 7 likely to save on costs.

Screen Flickering / PWM (Pulse-Width Modulation)
| Screen flickering / PWM detected | 465.8 Hz Amplitude: 12 % | ≤ 100 % brightness setting | |
The display backlight flickers at 465.8 Hz (worst case, e.g., utilizing PWM) Flickering detected at a brightness setting of 100 % and below. There should be no flickering or PWM above this brightness setting. The frequency of 465.8 Hz is relatively high, so most users sensitive to PWM should not notice any flickering. However, there are reports that some users are still sensitive to PWM at 500 Hz and above, so be aware. In comparison: 52 % of all tested devices do not use PWM to dim the display. If PWM was detected, an average of 7556 (minimum: 5 - maximum: 343500) Hz was measured. | |||
