Verdict: Compromises, but also many good aspects
When one buys a laptop as affordable as the HP OmniBook 3, there certainly are compromises. For one, the 16-inch screen has lackluster color gamut, which means the colors are rather dull and also inaccurate. Also, it lacks a backlight keyboard, and HP shipped our review unit without a charger. Plus, the RAM is soldered, and the GPU performance is rather weak.
On the flipside, the HP OmniBook laptop runs very cool and quiet, and most importantly, efficiently: It achieved over 18 hrs of battery life. The CPU performance is good, and with 16 GB RAM as well as 512 GB SSD storage, the OmniBook 3 will do very well in everyday office use. This makes the OmniBook a good choice for an affordable personal laptop, especially for users who prefer bigger screens and a keyboard with a numpad.
Price and Availability
As of this review, the HP OmniBook 3 16 starts at roughly $650 in the USA over in the HP webshop.
Specifications
Case, Connectivity and Input Devices
Since the HP OmniBook 3 16 is a laptop squarely aimed at the budget sector, HP does cut a few corners. The device is mostly made out of plastic, with the exception of the aluminum display cover. The plastic is smooth and painted dark silver in the palmrest area, while the black screen bezel and gray bottom cover are made out of rough plastic. The laptop can certainly be twisted a bit with enough force and the screen wobbles slightly, so you will definitely not mistake the HP laptop for a premium laptop. On the flipside, the palmrest can not be depressed easily, and the keyboard does not flex too much while typing. Also, the screen, which opens to around 130 degrees, can be opened with one hand.
HP gives the OmniBook laptop a port selection, which includes most everything most people will need. Not included is an SD card slot, and the USB-C ports do not have a Thunderbolt 4 / USB4 speed. That is an acceptable compromise for a budget laptop, and the same is true for the fact that it lacks Wi-Fi 7 - Wi-Fi 6E should still be enough for most budget-laptop users.
Since the RAM is soldered, it can not be upgraded. Opening the device is simple enough, four Phillips head screws and a few clips hold the bottom cover. The only upgradeable component is the M.2 2280 SSD.
The input devices consist of a full-size keyboard with a numpad as well as a mechanical clickpad with a plastic surface (13.5 x 8.5 cm). Regarding the keyboard: It lacks a backlit function, and the gray keys with their white lettering are not the most readable. The typing experience is good, though, with a good amount of travel and nice feedback. If the chassis would be a bit more stable, the typing feel would be even better. As for the touchpad, while it does feel slightly cheap, the user experience is perfectly fine for everyday use.

Display
HP uses a 16 inch 16:10 IPS display with a WUXGA (1,920 x 1,200) resolution. It is being advertised with 300 cd/m² and only 62.5 percent sRGB color gamut.
While the screen exceeds the 300 cd/m² mark, it still is clearly a cheap display option. The color accuracy of the display is low. At least, there is no PWM, and with the matte screen surface, reflections are not a problem, either.

Performance
Testing Conditions
All benchmarks were performed with the "Best performance" setting.
Processor
The Qualcomm Snapdragon X1-26-100 is the most entry level Snapdragon X CPU for laptops. It has eight Oyron CPU cores based on the ARM architecture, which have clock rates of up to 3 GHz. More CPU comparisons are available through our CPU comparison list.
In our testing, the processor of the HP OmniBook 3 16 could consume up to 45 W, which drops to around 37 W during sustained load. Overall, the OmniBook performed adequately in our testing, though the emulation limits the potential. In the native Cinebench 2026, the OmniBook easily beats the Lenovo IdeaPad Slim 3 with Intel Wildcat Lake in multicore performance, but lags behind a bit when it comes to singlecore testing.
CPU performance is not throttled in battery mode.

The integrated Adreno GPU of the HP OmniBook 3 16 is nothing to write home about. It is no doubt the weakest part of the Snapdragon X package, and only capable of playing older and simple games.

Power Consumption and Battery Life
HP does not supply a charger with the OmniBook 3 16; we tested it with a 65 W USB-C charger. Under load, the device can consume up to 70 W tops, so it may be wise to use a slightly more powerful charger.
The 68 Wh battery is pretty big. Battery life is excellent, with more than 18 hrs during our Wi-Fi / websurfing test (150 cd/m²).

This is how Notebookcheck is testing
Every year, Notebookcheck independently reviews hundreds of laptops and smartphones using standardized procedures to ensure that all results are comparable. We have continuously developed our test methods for around 20 years and set industry standards in the process. In our test labs, high-quality measuring equipment is utilized by experienced technicians and editors. These tests involve a multi-stage validation process. Our complex rating system is based on hundreds of well-founded measurements and benchmarks, which maintains objectivity.
