NVIDIA introduced the RTX 3060 Laptop GPU, RTX 3070 Laptop GPU, and the RTX 3080 Laptop GPU at CES 2021 following which we saw several major OEMs showcase their products featuring the latest Ampere mobile parts.

Though NVIDIA hasn't really done away with Max-Q, Ampere Laptop GPUs will henceforth not be labeled such as the company will no longer explicitly differentiate between Max-Q and Max-P parts. OEMs are also free to configure Ampere Laptop GPUs across a range of total graphics power (TGP) values and can also choose which third generation Max-Q features to implement. These details are not necessarily made explicit in the official spec sheets.

This puts end users in a quandary as there is no way of ascertaining the graphics performance of an RTX 3080 Laptop GPU-powered device by merely glancing at the specs. Prospective buyers will have to rely on driver information and independent reviews such as ours in order to make an informed purchase decision.
