No two ways about it, the Asus Strix Scar 15 is the most impressive gaming laptop we’ve ever reviewed. From its CPU to its GPU, it outpaces the competition and it does so at a price below £3,000. Although still expensive, this is remarkable. Add in a fabulous display and a wonderful keyboard and you have the complete package, with the only thing to complain about being the lack of a built-in webcam and fingerprint reader. Given what a beast the Asus Strix Scar 15 is, however, I’m happy to overlook such piffling weaknesses. If you’re in the market for the best gaming laptop money can buy, look no further. This IS the laptop you’ve been waiting for.

So who is the ROG Strix Scar 15 targeted at? Quite simply, hardcore gamers who want the best possible hardware built into a gaming notebook. I've reviewed plenty of ROG gaming notebooks and the new Strix Scar 15 is essentially the embodiment of what the Strix series means in the ROG family: gaming notebooks built for the best, raw, gaming experience. Every aspect of it is designed with the gaming enthusiast in mind, and there are certainly plenty of unique features built for these users. Of course, these also comes with a few trade-offs. For one, the Strix Scar 15 comes with a very heavy S$4,798 price tag. Then there's the astoundingly mind-boggling 1080p display resolution cap for the screen it is endowed, which is almost criminal of ASUS.

Lisa Gade reviews the 2021 Asus ROG Strix Scar 15 (G533) high end 15.6” gaming laptop with the AMD Ryzen 9 5900HX processor, NVIDIA RTX 3080 16GB dedicated graphics, 32GB RAM, 1TB SSD, a wide gamut 165Hz QHD display and an optical-mechanical keyboard. The laptop is edgy looking without being overly gamery (unless you activate the full array of RGB lighting) and it has a premium feel with unique design touches like a partially translucent keyboard deck and switchable hinge plate covers. This is a very powerful PC with the latest Zen 3 CPUs, but thermals are well controlled thanks to AMD’s chill processors, good cooling design and liquid metal thermal paste on the CPU. The laptop is available with Ryzen 7 5800H and Ryzen 9 5900HX CPUs, and NVIDIA RTX 3070 or 3080 graphics.

The Asus ROG Strix Scar 15 is the company's most decked out gaming laptop, purpose made for those of you who are either into e-sports or looking to get into the genre. These machines usually carry the best hardware, and in our case, we get a machine that's powered by the the paring of an AMD Ryzen 9 5900HX and an Nvidia GeForce RTX 3080 with 17GB VRAM. Our testing concludes that gaming on this machine is in every way a total treat, but there are a few caveats. For starters, no game currently leverages the 16GB VRAM on the RTX 3080. Second, while the display is definitely great from a gaming perspective, it lacks colour accuracy and proper colour management. Given its wide-gamut nature, there is no way to lock it into sRGB mode, making colour treatment difficult.

The ROG Strix Scar 15 for 2021 is a gaming powerhouse in the mobile segment. It may only be the first gaming notebook with a GeForce RTX 3080 graphics processor to be tested - and with more to come in the coming weeks and months - but combined with the AMD Ryzen 9 5900HX CPU, and based on the performance in our benchmarks, I reckon it's going to be the gaming notebook to beat this year.

The ASUS ROG Strix Scar 15, in more ways than one, is one beauty of a powerhorse that ticks all the checkboxes for a desktop replacement laptop. Hefty cost notwithstanding, it has plenty of quality picks that are well worth the investment, from the near-impeccable gaming performance to the impressive, gorgeous visual prowess, despite missing out on some practical features. It’s hardly the sveltest RTX 3080 laptop on the market, but more than makes up for the lack of portability in raw, beastly power – and for some, that’s all that really matters.

With its smaller and lighter format, I feel that the ROG Scar 15 is a more versatile performance laptop than its larger 17-inch kin with this generation, when you can get pretty much the same specs, features, and experience on both sizes. That's why this ends-up scoring a 4.5/5 and a recommendation in our review, despite its quirks and particularities that you should make sure to understand and accept before going with one of these. We'll get in-depth on all of those in the detailed article down below.
