No two ways about it, the Asus Strix Scar 15 is the most impressive gaming laptop we’ve ever reviewed. From its CPU to its GPU, it outpaces the competition and it does so at a price below £3,000. Although still expensive, this is remarkable. Add in a fabulous display and a wonderful keyboard and you have the complete package, with the only thing to complain about being the lack of a built-in webcam and fingerprint reader. Given what a beast the Asus Strix Scar 15 is, however, I’m happy to overlook such piffling weaknesses. If you’re in the market for the best gaming laptop money can buy, look no further. This IS the laptop you’ve been waiting for.

So who is the ROG Strix Scar 15 targeted at? Quite simply, hardcore gamers who want the best possible hardware built into a gaming notebook. I've reviewed plenty of ROG gaming notebooks and the new Strix Scar 15 is essentially the embodiment of what the Strix series means in the ROG family: gaming notebooks built for the best, raw, gaming experience. Every aspect of it is designed with the gaming enthusiast in mind, and there are certainly plenty of unique features built for these users. Of course, these also comes with a few trade-offs. For one, the Strix Scar 15 comes with a very heavy S$4,798 price tag. Then there's the astoundingly mind-boggling 1080p display resolution cap for the screen it is endowed, which is almost criminal of ASUS.

Lisa Gade reviews the 2021 Asus ROG Strix Scar 15 (G533) high end 15.6” gaming laptop with the AMD Ryzen 9 5900HX processor, NVIDIA RTX 3080 16GB dedicated graphics, 32GB RAM, 1TB SSD, a wide gamut 165Hz QHD display and an optical-mechanical keyboard. The laptop is edgy looking without being overly gamery (unless you activate the full array of RGB lighting) and it has a premium feel with unique design touches like a partially translucent keyboard deck and switchable hinge plate covers. This is a very powerful PC with the latest Zen 3 CPUs, but thermals are well controlled thanks to AMD’s chill processors, good cooling design and liquid metal thermal paste on the CPU. The laptop is available with Ryzen 7 5800H and Ryzen 9 5900HX CPUs, and NVIDIA RTX 3070 or 3080 graphics.

The Asus ROG Strix Scar 15 is the company's most decked out gaming laptop, purpose made for those of you who are either into e-sports or looking to get into the genre. These machines usually carry the best hardware, and in our case, we get a machine that's powered by the the paring of an AMD Ryzen 9 5900HX and an Nvidia GeForce RTX 3080 with 17GB VRAM. Our testing concludes that gaming on this machine is in every way a total treat, but there are a few caveats. For starters, no game currently leverages the 16GB VRAM on the RTX 3080. Second, while the display is definitely great from a gaming perspective, it lacks colour accuracy and proper colour management. Given its wide-gamut nature, there is no way to lock it into sRGB mode, making colour treatment difficult.

The ROG Strix Scar 15 for 2021 is a gaming powerhouse in the mobile segment. It may only be the first gaming notebook with a GeForce RTX 3080 graphics processor to be tested - and with more to come in the coming weeks and months - but combined with the AMD Ryzen 9 5900HX CPU, and based on the performance in our benchmarks, I reckon it's going to be the gaming notebook to beat this year.

The ASUS ROG Strix Scar 15, in more ways than one, is one beauty of a powerhorse that ticks all the checkboxes for a desktop replacement laptop. Hefty cost notwithstanding, it has plenty of quality picks that are well worth the investment, from the near-impeccable gaming performance to the impressive, gorgeous visual prowess, despite missing out on some practical features. It’s hardly the sveltest RTX 3080 laptop on the market, but more than makes up for the lack of portability in raw, beastly power – and for some, that’s all that really matters.

With its smaller and lighter format, I feel that the ROG Scar 15 is a more versatile performance laptop than its larger 17-inch kin with this generation, when you can get pretty much the same specs, features, and experience on both sizes. That's why this ends-up scoring a 4.5/5 and a recommendation in our review, despite its quirks and particularities that you should make sure to understand and accept before going with one of these. We'll get in-depth on all of those in the detailed article down below.

So, we have concluded our tests on one of the most powerful 15-inch laptops at the moment. What did we learn? Well, as we said, it has an enormous amount of performance. The liquid metal inside helps a lot with the temperatures, and for the next generation, we would like to see it applied to the graphics card as well. Interestingly, the variable refresh rate technology, combined with the beefy 90Wh battery pack delivers about 15 hours of Web browsing and 10 hours and 45 minutes of video playback, which was unheard of for a gaming notebook of this caliber a couple of years back.

Intel is no longer required for the ultimate gaming performance. Unlike the Strix Scar 15 G532, the Strix Scar 15 G533 has swapped all Intel Core options for liquid metal cooled AMD Ryzen processors alongside additional updates to the chassis, display, and graphics.

We’ve shown in this review that the G15 and Scar 15 perform almost identically in game, yet the G15 retails at £1699 currently, while the Scar 15 (in its configuration as reviewed here) is listed at £2699.99. Admittedly, there are a few quality of life differences between the two, with the Scar offering a better keyboard, double the RAM and a 1440p display… but it’s hard to escape the fact that for £1000 less you can get essentially the same gaming performance in what is still a very good all-round package. That would be my main recommendation for those looking for a laptop in this performance class. Unless you absolutely must have the higher-resolution display or need that 32GB of DDR4 memory, while the ASUS ROG Strix Scar 15 is a very capable machine, it’s just hard to argue with the sheer bang-for-buck offered by the G15 Advantage. The Scar 15 is listed on ASUS’ own retail store HERE, though it is currently out of stock.

The Asus ROG Strix Scar 15 offers swathes of power, a great screen, a top-notch opto-mechanical keyboard and impressive thermal performance – it’s a top-tier gaming laptop. But for some creative workloads, or if you want a lighter laptop with a more subdued design, it’s worth looking elsewhere.

The Strix Scar 15 is a great gaming laptop for many of the same reasons the Strix Scar 17 is. If you don't mind the extra weight and size, go for the 17. For an extra £150 you get double the RAM, a larger display, a slightly better speaker system and an expanded keyboard. The extra 16GB of RAM and 1.7 inches of screen diagonal are both well worth having, too. For me, however, the 15.6in form factor makes this the gaming machine to beat this year. It's fast, well made, a pleasure to use and to game on and it isn't as expensive as you might have thought, either.

The 2022 Asus ROG Strix Scar 15 is a versatile performance/gaming full-size laptop and one of the better-value options in its class, as well as a fairly compact and lightweight product for what it is. In our tests, it performed a little faster than the larger 2022 Scar 17, and significantly faster than the previous 2021 generation based on AMD hardware, thanks to the updated hardware and the implementation of a MUX. On the other hand, the components still run hot inside on the stock Turbo mode, especially on the GPU side now, the efficiency of the Intel Alder Lake platform leaves to desire, and there are still some ergonomic quirks that you'll have to accept if you'll decide on one of these.
