The Oppo Find X9 is positioned as a relatively affordable flagship with a Hasselblad camera system, aiming to offer high-end photography for under $1000. Our review reveals how well image quality, zoom performance and AI post-processing work together in everyday use.

We recently took a close look at the Oppo Find X9. The comparatively affordable flagship phone comes with a Hasselblad camera system that aims to deliver high image quality.

Let's take a look at what Oppo can offer in terms of image quality with its cameras.

Three 50 MP cameras

The main camera, the ultra-wide-angle camera and the periscope zoom telephoto camera all offer high-resolution 50 megapixels, while a 32-megapixel camera is used for selfies on the front.

However, the light sensitivity of almost all lenses is somewhat lower than that of more expensive high-end models. So users need to pay a little more attention to lighting conditions to ensure that enough detail reaches the sensor.

In our detailed review, we describe the image quality as follows:

All in all, we like the images provided by the main camera, although the rendering of the plant appears a touch flat in places. However, the level of detail remains consistently very high, and the dynamic range is good in low light.

While the image quality doesn't quite match that of more expensive phones, which often offer higher contrast, the pictures are still of a very high standard and differ only in the details.

Zoom quality test

The Oppo Find X9 offers 6x optical zoom, measured from the main camera's focal length. The phone reaches up to 120x magnification overall. Naturally, a digital zoom is then used, enhanced by AI. This is quite practical for seeing distant objects, essentially acting as a substitute for binoculars.

It works reasonably well for photos, but there are a few issues. Up to about 10x magnification, the image appears very natural, but beyond that, edges become strangely soft, and it's never entirely clear whether the AI is truly reproducing image details accurately or simply adding them.

Verdict

The Oppo Find X9 offers a good camera system that is also versatile thanks to its large zoom range. At high magnification, the AI becomes quite aggressive, which is a matter of personal preference.
