Topdon TC002C Duo review: A thermal camera for every smartphone
Marc Herter (translated by Marc Herter) Published 🇩🇪 🇫🇷 ...
Verdict: One size fits all
Among the Topdon TC002C Duo's many noteworthy advantages are its robust shell, excellent companion app, and remarkable image quality. The thoughtful included accessories, such as adapter cables and a carrying case, further enhance the experience. This is precisely what we expected after testing the Topdon TC001 last year. The standout feature here is undoubtedly its compatibility with both Android and iOS devices. This eliminates the need for workshops to stock separate tools when technicians use different smartphone operating systems. Furthermore, a Windows app allows connection to laptops or PCs, expanding its versatility.
Topdon demonstrates a clear commitment to ongoing improvements through regular updates to the TopInfrared app, available on both the Google Play Store and Apple App Store (the latest update was released less than a month before this review). A minor frustration is that the app doesn't retain settings for designated measurement points or within the picture-in-picture function. For those frequently analyzing similar components, savable templates would be a welcome addition.

Price and availability
The TopDon TC002C Duo retails for around US$249 on Amazon. You can find it also on AliExpress.
We previously reviewed the Topdon TC001, specifically designed for Android smartphones. The TC002C Duo now offers a universal solution compatible with virtually all current smartphones. Users with only an Android or Apple device can opt for either the TC001 or TC002 models, which are typically more affordable than the all-in-one TC002C Duo. However, all three devices share the same sensor and similar housing, delivering consistently good image quality across the range.

Build quality and accessories
The TC002C Duo is encased in a durable combination of aluminum and plastic, suggesting it’s well-equipped to handle demanding environments. Weighing in at just 29g for the camera itself, the total package – including accessories – tips the scales at 130g. Topdon includes a practical carrying case and adapter cables for both laptops and iPhones with Lightning connectors.
Image quality and app functionality
With thermal cameras, image processing is often as crucial as the sensor's raw quality. The TC002C Duo performs a significant amount of post-processing directly within the camera itself. Raw data can also be viewed on a PC without the app. The Windows app unlocks further editing options, including false color palettes, measurement points, lines, and areas.
However, the real power lies in Topinfrared – the Android and iOS app for the thermal camera. It offers an extensive suite of features for creating and editing thermal images, alongside helpful tutorials and reporting tools. The app even includes an AI assistant that can be beneficial in specific applications. TopFix is designed to identify pests, leaks, circuits, and hotspots; however, this feature requires a user account as the AI operates on the cloud. Upon registration, you receive 100 responses from the chatbot (currently in beta – token refills are not yet available).
The app provides various analysis functions, false color settings, and picture-in-picture capabilities when capturing images. Unfortunately, many of your chosen settings aren't preserved between app restarts. You often find yourself reconfiguring measurement ranges each time you launch the application. Savable templates would significantly improve efficiency for repetitive tasks.
Thanks to its excellent app and a quality sensor, the TC002C Duo produces impressive thermal images. The ability to adjust emissivity and ambient temperature within the app allows for accurate and contactless temperature measurements.
