Full HD gaming with the AMD Radeon RX 5600 XT

Less VRAM in the middle class! AMD now fully relies on the Navi architecture and sends out the AMD Radeon RX 5600 XT, a mid-range GPU that is designed for Full HD gaming. Find out how well the Sapphire model performs in this review.

The RDNA architecture of the new graphics cards is now also available for the somewhat smaller budget. If the RX-5700 series was still too expensive, you can now enjoy the new Navi-10-based graphics card with the somewhat cheaper AMD RX 5600 XT.

Well-known features like PCI Express 4.0, Fidelity FX and Freesync are still on board. The well-known Navi 10 graphics chip is also used for the Radeon RX 5700 XT. Basically, the RX 5600 XT only differs in clock rates, maximum power consumption and VRAM. The latter has shrunk to 6 GB GDDR6. The Polaris predecessors still had up to 8 GB.

AMD has already scored points in terms of energy requirements with the RX 5700 and the RX 5700 XT. The same applies to the smaller Navi-offshoot, which is now specified at 150 Watts. However, board partners still have some scope to reduce or increase the power consumption.

Our test model, the Sapphire Pulse Radeon RX 5600 XT, is listed for just under 300 Euros (~$326) at the time of testing. Most users should be able to cope with three display ports and one HDMI output. The graphics card also requires an 8-pin power connector.

Our test system based on AMD Ryzen 9 3900X

A current AMD platform based on the MSI MEG X570 Godlike serves as the test system. The CPU (AMD Ryzen 9 3900X) offers good CPU performance and we use an AIO (Alphacool Eisbaer Aurora 360) for cooling. The 16 GB RAM comes from G-Skill and clocks at 3,600 MHz. We use the Acer Predator XB321HK as a monitor. This does not restrict us due to its UHD suitability. Our thanks go to AMD for providing the test platform.

The clock rates of the Sapphire Pulse Radeon RX 5600 XT

The clock rates of the Sapphire Pulse Radeon RX 5600 XT are slightly above the factory specifications from AMD. The graphics card has a dual BIOS, which can be selected directly on the card using a slider. For the tests, we only used the performance BIOS to get the best performance out of the graphics card. Shortly before the release of the Radeon RX 5600 XT, new BIOS versions were released, which increase the clock rates and the maximum TDP. Our test sample reaches up to 1,750 MHz in boost and 14 GHz in VRAM. The TDP was also increased slightly by 10 watts to 160 watts. If the Sapphire Pulse Radeon RX 5600 XT is used with the Silent BIOS, the power consumption drops to 135 watts. Also, the boost clock is only at 1,620 MHz and the VRAM is slowed down somewhat at only 12 GHz.

Synthetic benchmarks

In the synthetic benchmarks, the Sapphire Pulse Radeon RX 5600 XT ranks almost always in front of a GeForce RTX 2060 Super. Nevertheless, the distance to the AMD Radeon RX 5700 is negligible, which will probably question its relevance in the medium term. The much older AMD Radeon RX Vega 64 can keep up well with the new RX 5600 XT, but the energy balance is much worse due to the almost double TDP (295 watts).

In our gaming tests, the Sapphire Pulse Radeon RX 5600 XT is just behind the AMD Radeon RX 5700. Our test sample can always prevail against the GeForce GTX 1660 Super. The RX 5600 XT copes very well with playing modern titles in Full HD. Older titles or less-demanding games can also be played in higher resolutions. Examples include FIFA 20 and the two racing games F1 2019 and Forza Horizon 4.

The measured frame times and the frame course show no abnormalities that would negatively influence the gameplay. We use The Witcher 3 (ultra preset) for this test and with an average of 77 FPS the game can be enjoyed with all details.

The maximum power consumption of the graphics card is 160 watts in theory. When idling, the system is content with 112 watts without a monitor, although an average of 321 watts of energy is drawn from the socket during the stress test. If we increase the power target by 20%, the Sapphire Pulse Radeon RX 5600 XT can use up to 192 watts, which ensures a higher and more stable boost clock.

In comparison, the Sapphire Pulse Radeon RX 5600 XT is on par with the older AMD Radeon RX 570, which however offers significantly less performance. This clearly shows that the performance per watt could be increased considerably. The Sapphire Pulse Radeon RX 5600 XT also does quite well against the graphics cards from Nvidia. However, the competition's GTX models are much more economical.

The temperatures of the Sapphire Pulse Radeon RX 5600 XT are in the green in normal use. Nevertheless, there is also a GPU hotspot of 95 °C during the stress test, which even rises to 99 °C due to the increased power target. The two axial fans have their hands full in regard to cooling the graphics card. Nevertheless, the Sapphire Pulse Radeon RX 5600 XT remains pleasantly quiet under load. In the stress test, the two fans turned at almost 2,200 rotations per minute.

After the launch of the Navi graphics cards, AMD now had to raise the ante in the middle class and has presented the AMD Radeon RX 5600 XT, a solid graphics card for Full HD gaming. This is exactly where AMD sees its purpose, because the 5700 series is already available for QHD gaming.

In the test, we were able to consistently confirm the performance of our Sapphire Pulse Radeon RX 5600 XT test sample. All modern titles can be played smoothly and in some cases the performance of the smaller Navi card is sufficient even for higher resolutions. It doesn't matter that the RX 5600 XT only uses 6 GB VRAM. After all, Nvidia's current GeForce GTX 1660 Super only offers 6 GB VRAM, as well.

Thanks to RDNA and the 7 nm manufacturing process, the mid-range graphics cards now also get a decent performance upgrade without consuming more energy.

The cooling used also works solidly and keeps the temperatures of the graphics card in check. However, the cooling system no longer offers a lot of scope when it comes to getting even more performance out of the graphics card. In our opinion, this is not necessary either. The Sapphire Pulse Radeon RX 5600 XT is one of the cheapest RX 5600 XT cards on the market at a price close to 300 Euros (~$326). Nevertheless, the price difference to the faster AMD Radeon RX 5700 is negligible. Thus, the AMD Radeon RX 5600 XT has to be significantly cheaper to really attract buyers.
