Verdict - Mini PC with a strong overall package: versatile, inexpensive and without major compromises
The Minisforum AI X1 presents itself in the test as a powerful and well-equipped mini PC that delivers a very fast performance in everyday use. The AMD Ryzen 7 255 in combination with fast DDR5 RAM and a PCIe 4.0 SSD ensures short loading times and high responsiveness. Nevertheless, you have to do without a dedicated NPU, which can have disadvantages for AI tasks. The integrated Radeon graphics are sufficient for typical multimedia and office tasks as well as light gaming, but without replacing dedicated GPUs. The efficient cooling system is particularly positive, enabling stable temperatures and low noise levels even under continuous load.
The variety of connections with numerous USB ports, including USB4 and optional OCuLink, makes the AI X1 very versatile. Minor limitations arise from the use of the OCuLink adapter, which blocks an M.2 slot, as well as the only average SSD performance. Overall, the Minisforum AI X1 offers a coherent overall package with good performance and flexible features at a reasonable price.
Pros
Cons
Price and availability
Minisforum is expanding its portfolio of affordable mini PCs with the AI-X1 model, which is based on the latest AMD Ryzen processors. The barebone version with AMD Ryzen 7 255 starts at just $335 and still offers plenty of performance and a wide range of connectivity options. Meanwhile, our test model with 32 GB RAM and a 1 TB SSD changes hands for $519. With an AMD Ryzen AI 9 365 the Minisforum AI X1 (from $575) can also be ordered with a significantly more powerful CPU.
Specifications
Case & Connectivity
Visually, the Minisforum AI X1 is presented in an elegant silver tone, with the manufacturer opting for a mixture of metal and plastic. The build quality is consistently high and leaves no room for criticism.
The mini PC offers versatile connectivity: two USB4 ports with PCIe 4.0 x4 connections enable very high data rates, and the additional M.2 slot can optionally be used as an OCuLink for external GPUs. Up to four displays can also be controlled, a 2.5 Gbit/s LAN port ensures fastconnections,s and WiFi 7 adds a powerful wireless network to the mix.

Accessories
The scope of delivery of the Minisforum AI X1 includes a 120 W power supply unit, a VESA mount including mounting material, an HDMI cable, a short operating manual and the optional OCuLink adapter.
Maintenance
The Minisforum AI X1 can be easily opened via the underside. The RAM and SSD can be easily replaced or installed if you have opted for the barebone version at the time of purchase. An additional M.2 slot is also available, which can be used to install an OCuLink adapter.
Sustainability
The small packaging is made entirely of cardboard, which is an improvement on older devices from the manufacturer that we have tested. Unfortunately, the manufacturer does not mention any special sustainability initiatives.
Test conditions
All performance tests of the Minisforum AI X1 were carried out in the factory settings. In the UEFI, Minisforum also allows both the performance profile of the processor and the fan control to be customized.

Processor
The AMD Ryzen 7 255 in the Minisforum AI X1 delivers solid single- and multi-core performance thanks to its modern architecture. In a direct comparison, the performance is at the expected level of other 8-core processors, without any recognizable artificial performance limitation by the manufacturer. The SoC can also achieve a short-term power consumption of up to 65 watts.

Cinebench R15 Multi Loop
In the first longer stress test with the Cinebench R15 continuous loop, the Minisforum AI X1 shows that the AMD Ryzen 7 255 does not suffer any significant drop in performance even over longer periods of time. The analysis of the telemetry data proves that the SoC can be operated with up to 54 watts under continuous load. The temperature of the Ryzen 7 255 stabilizes at around 88 C.
System performance
In everyday use, the Minisforum AI X1 presents itself as a powerful and responsive mini PC. The fast DDR5 RAM and the fast PCIe SSD ensure that applications start almost without delay. The model also delivers an all-around solid performance compared to other devices in this class without noticeably falling behind. The only disadvantage is when it comes to AI tasks, as the built-in processor does not have an NPU unit.

Storage Devices
The Minisforum AI X1 uses a 1 TB SSD from Kingston with a PCIe 4.0 x4 connection, which offers reliable, albeit not outstanding, transfer rates. The active cooling also ensures a permanently stable performance and prevents dips during prolonged load. There are two M.2 slots available for storage, but when the OCuLink adapter is in use, only one of them can be occupied.

Graphics card and gaming performance
The Minisforum AI X1 with AMD Ryzen 7 255 relies on an integrated Radeon graphics unit, which is already used in many other models and therefore delivers similar performance. Intel's new Arc Graphics 140T can deliver better performance in some scenarios, although AMD's Radeon 780M often performs better in comparison. However, it does not come close to the performance of dedicated GPUs, such as an Nvidia GeForce RTX 4050 laptop.

Minisforum AI X1 performance check with an Nvidia GeForce RTX 4090 via OCuLink
Thanks to OCuLink, the Minisforum AI X1 allows the connection of an external GPU and thus significantly increases graphics performance. With an Nvidia GeForce RTX 4090, the potential for AAA games and creative tasks increases noticeably. Although the lower bandwidth limits the full GPU power, OCuLink is clearly more powerful than USB4 or Thunderbolt 4 solutions.

Every year, Notebookcheck independently reviews hundreds of laptops and smartphones using standardized procedures to ensure that all results are comparable. We have continuously developed our test methods for around 20 years and set industry standards in the process. In our test labs, high-quality measuring equipment is utilized by experienced technicians and editors. These tests involve a multi-stage validation process. Our complex rating system is based on hundreds of well-founded measurements and benchmarks, which maintains objectivity.
