Heavily modded Sony Vaio UX490N UMPC gets Quad Boot

I am not sure if any one of you still remembers the Sony Vaio UX490N UMPC which was launched way back in November 2007. Well, I don’t blame you for having forgotten this device since Sony never took an initiative to add on some more juice to this little beauty after its November launch. Although Sony might have got other more interesting things on its agenda but some modders at Micro PC Talk Forums managed to get their hands on a Sony Vaio UX490N UMPC and converted it into a really powerful machine which is said to be able to hit the 57k score in Crystal Mark benchmarking making it the world’s fastest UMPC.

Let me just refresh your memory, so here are the original specs of the device for you:

• 4.5-inch 1,024 x 600 resolution touchscreen display
• 1.2GHz Intel Core 2 Solo U2200 ULV processor
• 1GB DDR2 RAM
• Pair of integrated cameras (0.3-megapixels in the front, 1.3-megapixels in the rear)
• Fingerprint scanner
• 48GB
• GMA 950 graphics
• Bluetooth / WiFi, Ethernet port, audio in / out jacks, an MS Duo expansion slot, WWAN support (AT&T)
• Windows Vista Business OS
• Li-ion battery good for 1.5 to 3.5-hours

Now, for the heavily modded version of the Sony Vaio UX490N UMPC, here are the changes for you:

• The 1.2GHz Core 2 Solo U2200 swapped with a 1.33GHz Core 2 Duo U7700 – overclocked to 1.438GHz
• The 48 GB SSD gives way to the RunCore Pro IV 128GB SSD
• The E169 Huawei terminal has been added to this device which offers HSDPA/UMTS (900/2100MHz) 3G data up to 7.2mbps, GSM/GPRS/EDGE (850/900/1800/1900MHz) voice calling and texting.
• Intel 3945ABG WiFi card swapped for an Intel 4965AGN card which offers WiFi A/B/G/N and functions under OSX.
• Quad boot: Windows 7 Ultimate, Windows Vista Business, Windows XP Professional, and Mac OSX Leopard 10.5.7.

The best part is that despite these heavy upgrades the battery life is still really good. The modded UMPC is the smallest UMPC to run Mac OSX Leopard 10.5.7 on it. I think the modders definitely deserve a standing ovation for resurrecting the Vaio UX490N. I am highly impressed by this mod, Keep it up guys…
