AMD Ryzen 7 7735HS vs AMD Ryzen 5 7640U vs AMD Ryzen 5 PRO 7640HS

AMD Ryzen 7 7735HS

► remove from comparison AMD R7 7735HS

The AMD Ryzen 7 7735HS is a processor for (gaming) laptops based of the Rembrandt Refresh generation. The R7 7735HS integrates all eight cores based on the Zen 3+ microarchitecture. They are clocked at 3.2 (guaranteed base clock) to 4.75 GHz (Turbo) and support SMT / Hyperthreading (16 threads). The chip is manufactured in 6 nm at TSMC. The 7735HS is the refresh of the Ryzen 7 6800HS with 50 MHz higher boost speed and a potential higher TDP up to 54W.

The Zen 3+ is a refresh of the Zen 3 architecture and should not offer a lot of changes. The chip offers modern features, like support for USB 4 (40 Gbps), PCI-E Gen 4 and DDR5-4800MT/s or LPDDR5-6400MT/s.

Performance

The average 7735HS in our database is in the same league as the Ryzen 5 7645HX, Ryzen 9 6900HS, Ryzen 9 6900HX, Core i5-12500H, Core i5-13500H, as far as multi-thread benchmark scores are concerned.

Thanks to its decent cooling solution and a long-term CPU power limit of 75 W, the Acer Nitro 16 AN16-41 is among the fastest laptops built around the 7735HS that we know of. It can be about 20% faster in CPU-bound workloads than the slowest system featuring the same chip in our database, as of August 2023.

The integrated GPU Radeon 680M is still one of the fastest iGPUs (only bested by the new Radeon 780M). It is based on the RDNA2 architecture and offers 12 CUs at up to 2.2 GHz.

Power consumption

This Ryzen 7 CPU has a specified TDP of 35 W to 54 W (also known as the long-term power limit).

AMD Ryzen 5 7640U

► remove from comparison AMD R5 7640U

The Ryzen 5 7640U is a Phoenix family processor that was unveiled in H1 2023. The mid-range laptop chip has 6 SMT-enabled cores (12 threads) running at 3.5 GHz to 4.9 GHz. Those Zen 4 architecture cores are mated to the Radeon 760M integrated graphics adapter; the latter is about as fast as the aging Intel Iris Xe options.

Furthermore, the 7640U is one of the first AMD processors to support Ryzen AI which is AMD's answer to Intel's DL Boost and GNA technologies.

Architecture & Features

Phoenix family chips are powered by the Zen 4 architecture, much like Dragon Range family chips are. The latter however lacks hardware AI workload acceleration capabilities that Phoenix has.

More importantly, Zen 4 introduces AVX512 support (which Zen 3 chips did not have) and, thanks to a plethora of other improvements including larger caches/registers/buffers across the board, is set to deliver a double-digit IPC improvement.

Elsewhere, the 7640U has 16 MB of L3 cache and USB 4 support (therefore, Thunderbolt is supported as well). The chip is compatible with DDR5-5600 and LPDDR5x-7500 RAM which is really impressive as of H1 2023.

A system powered by this Ryzen 5 will have access to twenty PCIe 4 lanes; this means a speedy enough NVMe SSD will be able to deliver speeds up to 7.8 GB/s.

Systems powered by this APU are expected to run 64-bit Windows 11, 64-bit Windows 10, or Linux. Like most laptop chips, the 7640U is neither overclockable nor user-replaceable. It gets soldered down for good (FP7, FP7r2, FP8 socket interfaces).

Performance

While we have not tested a single system built around the 7640U as of December 2023, it's safe to expect the chip to be at least 10% faster than the Zen 3 Plus-powered Ryzen 5 6600U (6 cores, 12 threads, up to 4.5 GHz).

Your mileage may vary depending on how high the CPU power limits are and how competent the cooling solution of your laptop is.

Graphics

The Radeon 760M has 8 CUs (512 shaders) running at up to 2,600 MHz. While not great for gaming (unless you are fine with resolutions such as 900p and low detail settings), the iGPU will let you use up to 4 monitors with resolutions as high as SUHD 4320p. It also HW-decodes and HW-encodes the most widely used video codecs including AV1, HEVC, AVC without breaking a sweat.

Power consumption

The 7640U has a long-term power limit (default TDP) of 28 W that laptop makers are free to change to anything between 15 W and 30 W. Either way, an active cooling solution is a must for any system powered by the chip.

Last but not the least, the 7640U is manufactured on TSMC's 4 nm process for high, as of late 2023, energy efficiency.

AMD Ryzen 5 PRO 7640HS

► remove from comparison AMD R5 PRO 7640HS

The AMD Ryzen 5 PRO 7640HS is a fast mid-range laptop processor of the Phoenix series. It offers 6 cores (hexa core) based on the Zen 4 architecture that supports hyperthreading (12 threads). The cores clock from 4.3 (base) up to 5 GHz (single core boost). The processor includes 6 MB L2 cache and 16 MB L3 cache.

Compared to the consumer Ryzen 5 7640HS, the PRO models offer additional security, manageability, and reliability features designed for professional users and workstation environments.

The performance of the R5 PRO 7640HS is clearly lower (multi-threaded) than the higher end Ryzen 7 7840HS and Ryzen 9 7940HS models due to the two missing CPU cores. Compared to the faster HX series, the 7640HS at 54W TDP should be only slightly slower than the Ryzen 5 7645HX (also 6 Zen 4 cores, up to 5 GHz, 55W). The old Ryzen 5 6600H should be easily bested thanks to the improved architecture and higher clock speeds.

The chip integrates a modern and fasts RDNA 3 graphics card (iGPU) called Radeon 760M with 8 of the 12 CUs and 2.6 GHz clock speed. Furthermore, the Phoenix series include a video engine with AV1 de- and encoding, a new Xilinx FPGA based XDNA AI accelerator (Ryzen AI) that should be faster than the AI engine in the Apple M2 SOC and a dual-channel DDR5-5600 / LPDDR5x-7500 memory controller (with ECC support). The connectivity features includes 2 possible USB 4 (40 Gbps) ports and 20 PCIe 4.0 lanes for a GPU and SSDs.

The Phoenix series uses a single monolithic design (unlike the chiplet design of the 7045HX series) and is manufactured in the modern 4nm process at TSMC. The TDP can be configured between 35 and 45 Watt.
