Minisforum BD790i review: Mini-ITX mainboard with an AMD Ryzen 9 7945HX and PCIe 5.0 as a basis for small gaming PCs

Minisforum is primarily known for offering mini PCs across all performance classes. Most mini PC manufacturers tend to stay away from the conventional desktop market but as it turns out, Minisforum is daring to gain a foothold in this area too. Some time ago, we were able to discover the good performance of the Minisforum BD770i based on the AMD Ryzen 7 7745HX. As the top-of-the-range model with an AMD Ryzen APU, Minisforum's BD790i mainboard is an even more powerful model in the manufacturer's portfolio, which we will be examining in detail in this review.

Minisforum has installed an AMD Ryzen 9 7945HX processor into the BD790i, which is equipped with 16 Zen4 cores. This means that the SoC, which comes from the mobile sector, is currently one of the fastest AMD currently has to offer. In order to evaluate its gaming performance, we took a look at it in combination with an Nvidia GeForce RTX 4090. Thanks to its full PCIe x16 slot, the graphics card could be connected with its full performance.

Case and test setup

To ensure the best possible comparability with the Minisforum BD770i which we already tested, we stuck to the exact same conditions. More precisely, this means that we carried out all our CPU tests in its installed state. We used the Phanteks Enthoo Evolv Shift XT case, which offers a good basis thanks to its compactness.

For our performance comparison with a dedicated graphics card, we tested the Minisforum BD790i together with the Palit GeForce RTX 4090 GameRock OC in an open setup. Due to the size of the graphics card, it was not possible to install it in the Phanteks Enthoo Evolv Shift XT. Graphics cards that don't exceed a length of 32.4 centimeters fit into the Phanteks Enthoo Evolv Shift XT.

Scope of delivery and connectivity

The Minisforum BD790i mainboard's scope of delivery is similar to that of the Minisforum BD770i. The manufacturer ships the mainboard with a pre-installed cooler that covers both the processor and the voltage converters. There is an IO shield to match the mainboard, which is unfortunately not pre-installed. A relatively large WLAN antenna is also included in the scope of delivery. There are no completely pre-configured options, but this is not a problem. A 120-millimeter fan must be purchased as a CPU fan, which is quickly installed using the mounting material. An SSD and RAM as well as a PC power supply unit are then required for operation. The Minisforum BD790i is a good basis for a powerful and compact DIY PC in miniature format.

The Minisforum BD790i's connectivity is pretty sparse. There are only a few connections on the back compared to conventional mainboards, although the most important ports are on board. There is also a USB 3.2 connector on the board itself, which means that a total of 6 USB-A ports can be used. Unfortunately, there are no other connections, such as an ARGB header or an additional USB-C port. When it comes to fan choice, you are limited to the pre-installed cooler. There is no alternative option for installing a more powerful cooler. It would be better to cool the voltage converters separately in order to give the user the option of installing their own cooling solution.

Processor benchmarks

The Minisforum BD790i mainboard is equipped with one of the most powerful processors currently available in the laptop sector. The AMD Ryzen 9 7945HX features 16 Zen4 cores, which can process a total of 32 threads. In terms of performance, this sounds very promising—and this was also proven in our tests. In the performance comparison, the AMD Ryzen 9 7945HX ranked between an AMD Ryzen 9 7900X and an AMD Ryzen 9 7950X. If we look at the comparison with Intel processors, then the AMD Ryzen 9 7945HX's performance can be compared with an Intel Core i7-14700K. Compared to conventional desktop processors, power consumption is the biggest advantage of the AMD Ryzen 9 7945HX. At just 100 watts, the processor is significantly more frugal and also easier to cool.

System performance

The test system based on the Minisforum BD790i couldn't always keep up with its competitors during the system performance benchmarks. Nevertheless, the system's performance was generally pretty high. The powerful and at the same time relatively frugal AMD Ryzen 9 7945HX shows no weaknesses during everyday use. The combination of its fast NVMe SSD and DDR5 RAM allows enough leeway for it to master even power-hungry tasks.

We recorded comparatively high latencies in our test system based on the Minisforum BD790i. We documented increased values even when simply surfing the web. These increased further when playing the 4K test video, which means that the system doesn't seem to be suitable for processing real-time video and audio material in this configuration.

Storage devices

As mentioned at the beginning of this review, Minisforum only supplies the BD790i mainboard itself. In order to be able to put a complete system into operation, you have to take care of the missing components such as RAM, SSD, power supply and a CPU fan yourself. For the SSD, we opted for a Kingston KC3000 with 2 TB of storage space. The model is connected via PCIe 4.0 x4 and doesn't fully take advantage of the interface, as the Minisforum BD790i technically supports two PCIe 5.0 SSDs. Both M.2 interfaces are located on the top of the mainboard. Covered by a small heat sink, which is also equipped with a small fan, our SSD had no problems delivering stable performance. We can reassure anyone who thinks that this small fan will cause an earache, as the fan is nice and quiet and can't be heard next to the CPU fan.

Graphics card - The AMD Radeon 610M as an iGPU

The AMD Ryzen 9 7945HX only features a simple graphics solution as an iGPU, which goes by the name of AMD Radeon 610M. This is still based on the RDNA2 architecture and only offers 2 CUs, which means that there are only 128 shader units in total available for 3D calculations. Compared to the AMD Ryzen 7 7745HX, which is installed on the Minisforum BD770i, there isn't any more 3D performance. In view of this, their results are almost identical. Compared to an AMD Radeon 780M, the AMD Radeon 610M has no chance. In our opinion, this weak graphics solution should not be expected to do more than simple image output.

Gaming performance - AMD Radeon 610M

In order to better assess the AMD Radeon 610M's 3D performance, we put it through some gaming tests. Unfortunately, the low-performance iGPU couldn't boast good frame rates. Even when playing older games, the AMD Radeon 610M struggled to display adequate frame rates on the screen. Models equipped with an AMD Radeon 780M offered noticeably better performance. Even so, the limits of an AMD Radeon 780M were also quickly reached, leaving only the option to use a dedicated graphics card if you're wanting to enjoy the latest games.

The Minisforum BD790i with an Nvidia GeForce RTX 4090

The Minisforum BD790i mainboard is ideal as the basis for a compact gaming system. The AMD Ryzen 9 7945HX offers plenty of performance, and even CPU-demanding games don't overtax the 16-core component in any way. A look at the synthetic benchmarks reveals only minor differences between the various systems. The Minisforum BD790i mainboard has a full PCIe x16 interface that already supports the 5.0 standard. This means that future graphics cards, which will probably be released in the coming months, can also be operated with their full bandwidth, which further underpins this component's future-proof qualities. We used our Palit GeForce RTX 4090 Gamerock OC for the gaming tests. Due to the size of the graphics card, we had to use the Minisforum BD790i in an open setup for these tests. The graphics card is simply too big for the Phanteks Enthoo Evolv Shift XT case.

To analyze the gaming benchmarks, let's first take a look at the performance at the CPU limit. This is where there were the biggest differences between the various processors. Our test system delivered roughly the performance level that can be expected from an AMD Ryzen 5 9600X. An Intel Core i9-14900K was within reach and only delivered slightly more performance. When we increased the resolution and the detail level, the processor's performance moved more and more into the background. At the GPU limit, all comparison devices were much closer together, meaning a real difference was hardly noticeable. The combination of an AMD Ryzen 9 7945HX and the Palit GeForce RTX 4090 Gamerock OC consistently ensured impressive gaming performance, which is in no way inferior to conventional desktop PCs.

All systems listed in this comparison were tested with the same graphics card, a Palit GeForce RTX 4090 Gamerock OC.

Power consumption and temperatures

Minisforum delivers the BD790i mainboard with a pre-installed heatpipe cooling unit, which cools the processor and the voltage converters on the mainboard. The choice of fan is up to the user and must be installed by themselves. The corresponding mounting material to install a 120-millimeter fan is included. We chose a Noctua NF-A12x25 fan, which was already used in our test of the Minisforum BD770i. The biggest advantage of the Minisforum BD790i compared to conventional desktop PCs is its low power consumption. We only measured around 140 watts during the Cinebench R15 multi-test, which is great efficiency in relation to the performance it offers.

Regarding its overall operation and the noise level during operation, we can only say that the built-in power supply unit is audible in our test setup. Both in idle mode and under load, we were unable to take any measurements that would be influenced by the installed power supply unit. The CPU fan and the pre-installed fan for cooling the SSD cannot be heard from the closed case. The cooling works very effectively and we didn't document any critical values under load. Nevertheless, we are of the opinion that separating the CPU and VRM cooler would make sense in order to be able to install a cooling solution for the processor itself. The SoC could certainly be cooled even more effectively with an AiO solution.

Compared to the well-known mainboard manufacturers, the setting options in the Minisforum BD790i mainboard's BIOS are very limited. The processor's power consumption can be changed, although the fan curve can't be adjusted separately. If Minisforum continues to cover this market, we would very much welcome a more user-friendly option.

The Minisforum BD790i reviewed: test sample provided by Minisforum

The Minisforum BD790i is a very powerful mainboard including an SoC, which, as a Mini-ITX mainboard, offers the perfect basis for building small systems. As this is only a mainboard, the manufacturer targets customers willing to build a system themselves. Unlike with ready-made mini PCs, you still have to take care of additional components. It goes without saying that this incurs additional costs.

In combination with the AMD Ryzen 9 7945HX, the Minisforum BD790i delivers impressive performance, great efficiency and—thanks to its PCIe-5.0 support—good futureproof qualities for graphics cards and SSDs.

Based on our tests of the Minisforum BD790i itself, we can say that the AMD Ryzen 9 7945HX is an extremely powerful processor that can currently handle all tasks with ease. Compared to an Intel Core i9-14900K or an AMD Ryzen 9 7950X, the AMD Ryzen 9 7945HX has to admit defeat—although the difference in performance is only very slight. In relation to power consumption, the conventional desktop processors can no longer keep up. The decision to accommodate laptop technology in a conventional mainboard is a sensible one when it comes to efficiency. However, the biggest disadvantage is that the SoC cannot simply be replaced. In addition, you are limited to a fixed cooling unit, which means you can't use alternative cooling units.

At first glance, its current price of just under US$500 seems very high. When comparing performance values, however, the AMD Ryzen 9 7945HX certainly doesn't need to hide behind the fastest desktop processors. We therefore consider its current price to be justified, and if you don't want to upgrade the CPU at a later date, you can buy it without hesitation.
