Minisforum BD795i SE review: The Mini-ITX desktop mainboard with an AMD Ryzen 9 CPU as a DIY solution for gaming mini PCs
Lots of performance, little connectivity.
The Minisforum BD795i SE promises high performance and is ideal for building compact Mini-ITX PCs. With its factory-installed AMD Ryzen 9 7945HX, it is aimed at demanding users. We tested its performance during intensive tasks and analyzed its gaming performance with an Nvidia GeForce RTX 4090.Sebastian Bade, 👁 Sebastian Bade (translated by Daisy Dickson) Published 🇩🇪 🇹🇷 ...
Verdict - A powerful basis for high-performance systems
The Minisforum BD795i SE is a powerful Mini-ITX mainboard with a permanently installed AMD Ryzen 9 7945HX. Technically, it is similar to the Minisforum BD790i, but does without WLAN and an active SSD cooler. In terms of price, the Minisforum BD795i SE is very attractive at $399.92 (Amazon) and delivers a lot of performance for comparatively little money. In this price range, other conventional desktop configurations can't hold a candle to the powerful AMD Ryzen 9 7945HX.
There are some limitations when it comes to its cooling, as the factory-installed heat sink can't be replaced. The CPU is also permanently installed, but with its 16 cores and 32 threads, it is still sure to offer enough performance for a long time. On the connection side, the BD795i SE cannot keep up with classic Mini-ITX mainboards, as it only features the most essential ports. However, everything required for compact, high-performance systems is available—above all, its full PCIe 5.0 support for SSDs and graphics cards is a clear plus point.

Minisforum is primarily known for mini PCs in various performance classes. For some time now, the manufacturer has also been venturing into the desktop sector in the shape of various mainboards. It takes powerful processors from the laptop sector, making this concept fundamentally different from the broad masses in the desktop segment. The BD770i with its Ryzen 7 7745HX as well as the BD790I already did well in our tests.
The Minisforum BD795i SE is a powerful Mini-ITX mainboard and is ideal for compact systems. Compared to the BD790i, it offers slightly reduced features, but is cheaper and still remains powerful. The AMD Ryzen 9 7945HX is an extremely strong SoC with 16 Zen4 cores and is one of AMD's fastest mobile processors. To evaluate its gaming performance, we tested the system with an Nvidia GeForce RTX 4090, which can be connected without restrictions thanks to a full PCIe x16 slot.

Scope of delivery and connectivity
The Minisforum BD795i SE's scope of delivery is almost identical to that of the BD790i. It comes with a pre-installed cooler that covers the CPU and the voltage converters. An IO shield (not pre-installed) is also included with the mainboard. Minisforum has done without the relatively large WLAN antenna included with the BD790i, making its box somewhat smaller. However, a bracket for retrofitting a WLAN module is included. Similar to barebone systems, you still have to take care of the SSD, RAM, power supply, case and a 120 mm fan yourself when purchasing the Minisforum BD795i SE.
Its connectivity is pretty basic. There are only a few connections on the back, but all the important ports are there. The board also features an internal USB 3.2 connector, meaning that a total of six USB A ports can be used. Other connections such as ARGB headers or an additional USB-C connector are missing. There is no alternative to the pre-installed cooler, as there is no mounting option for more powerful coolers—separate cooling of the voltage converters would be beneficial in this case.
Testing conditions
We carried out all performance tests in an open setup on a Streacom BC1 V2 bench table. We used a Noctua NF-A12x25 as a fan, and we used our Palit GeForce RTX 4090 Gamerock OC for the gaming tests in combination with a dedicated graphics card.
Processor benchmarks
The Minisforum BD795i SE is equipped with the powerful AMD Ryzen 9 7945HX, a laptop processor with 16 Zen4 cores and 32 threads. During our tests, its performance was between the AMD Ryzen 9 7900X and the AMD Ryzen 9 7950X and was comparable to the Intel Core i7-14700K. One major advantage over desktop CPUs is its efficiency: at just 100 watts, it's more frugal and is significantly easier to cool.

Cinebench results AMD Ryzen 9 7945HX
In combination with its AMD Ryzen 9 7945HX, the Minisforum BD795i SE mastered the Cinebench R15 continuous loop without any problems. The 16-core processor's performance remained stable over 50 runs without any dips under continuous load. The factory-installed cooler in combination with the 120-millimeter fan from Noctua ensured effective cooling.
System performance
During the system performance benchmarks, our test system with the Minisforum BD795i SE couldn't keep up with the competition all the time, but remained at a high level overall. The efficient AMD Ryzen 9 7945HX shows no weaknesses during everyday use, and thanks to its fast NVMe SSD and DDR5 RAM, it can even take on demanding tasks without any problems.

DPC latencies
Our test system with the Minisforum BD795i SE revealed moderate latencies. Everything ran smoothly when surfing the web and playing a 4K test video, while the latencies only increased when running Prime95.

Storage device
Minisforum only supplies the BD795 SE mainboard, so missing components such as the RAM, SSD, power supply unit and CPU fan have to be added yourself. We chose the Kingston KC3000 (2 TB, PCIe 4.0 x4), which can't fully utilize the potential of the board with its two PCIe 5.0 slots. Both M.2 slots are located on the top and are supplied with fresh air via the CPU fan. SSDs with a factory pre-installed cooler (maximum height approx. 27 millimeters) can also be fitted.

Graphics card - The AMD Radeon 610M as an iGPU
The AMD Ryzen 9 7945HX features a simple RDNA2 iGPU with 2 CUs and 128 shader units, namely the AMD Radeon 610M. It doesn't offer higher 3D performance than the Ryzen 7 7745HX's iGPU, which means that the results were almost identical. It proved to be clearly inferior to the AMD Radeon 780M and is only suitable for simple image output.

Energy requirement and temperatures
Minisforum supplies the BD795i SE with pre-installed heatpipe cooling for the CPU and voltage converter. The user has to install a 120-mm fan, but the necessary mounting material is already included. We used the Noctua NF-A12x25, which already proved itself in our review of the BD770i and BD790i. A major advantage of the BD795i SE is its high efficiency: During the Cinebench R15 multi-test, we measured only around 140 watts—impressive for the performance on offer.
Regarding its noise emissions: The mainboard itself didn't produce any noise during our test, as there are no active cooling elements. The cooling worked effectively and no critical temperatures occurred. Nevertheless, separate cooling for the CPU and VRMs would make sense, especially when using AiO water cooling. Minisforum's BD795M, for example, is an mATX mainboard by the same manufacturer that enables the use of its own cooling solutions. Why not also for the Mini-ITX models?
Compared to established motherboard manufacturers, the BIOS only offers a few options. Although you can adjust the CPU's power consumption, you can't adjust the fan curve. Should Minisforum continue to serve the market, a more user-friendly BIOS optimization would be desirable. A Windows-based monitoring tool would certainly be a useful addition here.

Notebookcheck total rating
The Minisforum BD795i SE is a powerful mini-ITX mainboard equipped with the AMD Ryzen 9 7945HX. Thanks to its compact design and efficient cooling, it is ideal for small high-performance PCs. However, its BIOS only offers limited options and its cooling could be more flexible.
