Acer Aspire V3-372-57CW Subnotebook Review

For the original German review, see here.
For many years now, Intel's graphics solutions had to fight the stigma of not being really suitable for anything besides simple home office tasks - not necessarily an unfounded accusation, we think. Fairly recently though, Intel has been able to not only improve the multimedia capability of their processor-integrated GPUs, but also the performance and the quality of the drivers. The result: some models can now go head to head with dedicated graphics cards.
As one of just a few manufacturers, Acer has attempted to build a gaming-suitable subnotebook without resorting to AMD or Nvidia hardware. The V3-372-57CW is equipped with a Skylake-generation Core i5-6267U with a TDP of 28 watts (GPU: Iris Graphics 550), 8 GB DDR3 RAM, and a 256 GB SSD. The 13.3-inch display supports Full-HD and is based on IPS technology. Including the OS and a 2-year warranty, the notebook sells for about 720 Euro (~$800).
There's not a lot of competition for the Acer, since the 13.3-inch segment is dominated by notebooks equipped with 15 watt CPUs and Intel HD Graphics 520 GPUs. One of the few similarly-priced alternatives is the Lenovo U31-70, which is based on previous-generation Broadwell hardware.
Since we reviewed a different configuration of the V3-372 a few months ago, we'll omit the sections on the case, input devices, and speakers. The photos are also carry-overs from the aforementioned review.

Display
Just like its sibling, the new version comes equipped with a matte 13.3-inch panel from LG (model LP133WF2-SPL3), which supports a resolution of 1920 x 1080 pixels and a comfortably-high pixel density of 166 ppi. Users who don't want to take advantage of Windows' built-in scaling need good eyes: at 100 %, text can be quite hard to read at times.
At a maximum brightness of 239 cd/m², our review notebook trails both the previously tested model (247 cd/m²) as well as the U31-70 (289 cd/m²). For inside use, the brightness is certainly sufficient. A positive aspect is that the display doesn't use PWM to regulate the display brightness, so flickering is not an issue.

Thanks to the IPS panel, blacks are reasonably dark and the contrast ratio is decent at 650:1. The output quality remains high even when viewing the display from the side - a cheaper TN panel would do much worse here. Color accuracy and graylevels are decent as well with DeltaE-deviations between 5 and 6. The color space coverage is not nearly good enough for Photoshop experts, however. For the given price point, Acer certainly delivered a decent enough display.
Performance
The real highlight is the CPU the Aspire V3-372-57CW comes with - the Intel Core i5-6267U. This dual-core Skylake processor has a TDP of 28 watts and runs at 2.9 to 3.3 GHz (2 cores: 3.1 GHz). The processor runs much faster than the more common 15 watt models (Core i5-6200U: 2.3-2.8 GHz). In addition, the i5-6267U comes with the Iris Graphics 550 - a very powerful GPU with 48 EUs and 64 MB of eDRAM cache (HD Graphics 520: 24 EUs, no eDRAM).
In addition, the notebook features 8 GB of DDR3L 1600 RAM (2x 4 GB, both slots occupied) and a 256 GB M.2 2280 SSD.
Processor
To ensure that the potential Turbo Boost frequencies can be utilized to their fullest potential, Acer decided to increase the already high TDP of the Core i5-6267U from 28 to 35 watts. The result is that the V3 maintains at a stable 3.3 GHz (CPU power consumption ~11 watts) during the single-threaded and 3.1 GHz (CPU power consumption ~17 watts) during the multi-threaded benchmark tests. The performance difference between the i5-6267U and the frequently encountered Core i5-6200U (TDP 15 watts) is between 20 and 25 % depending on the benchmark test. The bottom line: the i5-6267U performs much like the more expensive Core i7-6600U (TDP 15 watts), although the latter CPU loses performance sooner or later under prolonged load levels – unless the manufacturer has increased the TDP of 15 watts like Lenovo did with their ThinkPad T460s.

Storage Device
The M.2 2280 SSD from Kingston (RBU-SNS8152S3256GG2) is capable of read and write rates of about 500 and 300 MB/s, respectively. The drive performs similarly to a Samsung PM871, also as far as the transfer rates of smaller 4K files are concerned. There's no question that there are much faster (PCIe-)SSDs out there, but considering the price point, the AS SSD results of 1088 is more than acceptable.
System Performance
Because of the powerful CPU and the fast SSD, it's not really surprising that the system performance is strong as well. How well the notebook did when we ran the PCMark benchmarks was astounding though: even a ThinkPad T460s retailing for over 2000 Euro (~$2235) didn't stand a chance. We speculate that the PCMark tests take advantage of the 64 MB of eDRAM the i5 comes with, which the cores can access as fast temporary storage. Either way: those who end up with the V3-372 probably won't have to worry about performance for the next few years. Even demanding software and multitasking don't pose a problem. At most, we'd recommend an upgrade to 16 GB of RAM, since the GPU can use up a lot of RAM when running 3D applications.

GPU Performance
Thanks to the aforementioned eDRAM, the Iris Graphics 550 offers about twice the performance HD Graphics 520, which in turn translates nearly perfectly into higher frame rates. The 3DMark 11 result shows a performance plus of 88 percent compared to the sibling V3-372-50LK; compared to IdeaPad 500S (which only features a single RAM module) the difference is 111 percent. That's good enough to put Nvidia's middle tier of dedicated GPUs - namely the GeForce 920M, 930M and 940M - into their place. Only when running the newer 3DMark 2013, the 930M and 940M manage to perform at about the same level.

Gaming Performance
Those who think that the Iris Graphics 550 GPU only does well when running synthetic tests like the 3DMark-series, are quite wrong: even while gaming, the performance of the Skylake GPU closely shadows the GeForce 940M. Nevertheless, most current 3D games only run well at 1280 x 720 pixels with the settings on low. Users who prefer the native Full-HD resolution need to pick titles from 2011/2012 or even older ones. In addition, we encountered some driver problems, which either caused errors, crashes, or made it impossible to start the game at all. In our case, we had issues with Fifa 16, Assassins's Creed Syndicate, Just Cause 3, Rise of the Tomb Raider and Need for Speed (2016).

Emissions & Energy
System Noise
Although the Aspire V3 is frequently inaudible during idle (fan isn't spinning), the cooling system spools up rapidly when the notebook is subjected to 3D loads. The heat generated by the 28 watt - well, actually 35 watt - CPU can push the noise level to 46 dB, which can get annoying after a while. Competing notebooks with 15-watt CPU of course don't have this problem, but the performance is clearly not as good.

Temperature
It becomes clear that the 13-inch V3 heavily depends on its very active fan system when we take a look at the heat that gets generated: during our 1-hour stress test, the temperature of the Core i5 CPU climbed to 80 - 85 °C, even though the CPU was throttled to 2.1 GHz (GPU: 1.0 GHz). This corresponds to a CPU power draw of about 26 watts - it seems the fan system can't handle much more during prolonged usage. There aren't really any practical limitations, however, since the power consumption doesn't even come close to that during gaming sessions. With only the CPU working, the power draw can exceed 20 watts.
The user won't notice the high internal temperatures at all, as we only measured above 40 °C in one area on the back of the chassis. Otherwise, the system barely gets warm.
(+) The maximum temperature on the upper side is 37.1 °C / 99 F, compared to the average of 35.9 °C / 97 F, ranging from 21.4 to 59 °C for the class Subnotebook.
(±) The bottom heats up to a maximum of 43.2 °C / 110 F, compared to the average of 39.4 °C / 103 F
(+) In idle usage, the average temperature for the upper side is 27.8 °C / 82 F, compared to the device average of 30.8 °C / 87 F.
(+) The palmrests and touchpad are cooler than skin temperature with a maximum of 26.4 °C / 79.5 F and are therefore cool to the touch.
(±) The average temperature of the palmrest area of similar devices was 28.3 °C / 82.9 F (+1.9 °C / 3.4 F).
Power Consumption
As expected, the different configurations of the V3-372 perform similarly during idle: instead of a power consumption of 3.8 to 8.1 watts (Aspire V3-372-50LK with Core i5-6200U), we recorded only 3.4 to 7.0 watts (Aspire V3-372-57CW with Core i5-6267U), which shows the effectiveness of the energy conservation features integrated in the Skylake processor. At maximum load, the average power consumption can reach 45 watts (50 watts short-term), which is about 15 watts higher than what the less powerful sibling requires. The 65-watt power adapter handles the load easily.

Battery Life
Thanks to the low (partial load) power consumption and the rather large 51 Wh battery, WLAN surfing is possible for about 7 hours, provided the display brightness is set to 150 cd/m². A run time of 10 hours is easily possible when the load is reduced further and the display dimmed even more.

Verdict
At 720 Euro (~$800), Acer's Aspire V3-372-57CW is certainly an attractive package. In some areas, the subnotebook handily competes with the much more expensive Asus Zenbook UX303UB. The build quality and the input devices won't satisfy everyone, but there's no question that the V3 is suitable for daily use without major caveats. What makes the Aspire so interesting is the fact that it comes so well-equipped with IPS display, a decent amount of RAM, SSD, and a fast processor. Speaking of the CPU: not only does the i5-6267U outperform most ULV processors, it also comes with a integrated GPU suitable for gaming. As long as the drivers cooperate - which unfortunately isn't the case all the time - the frame rates approach those of a system equipped with a dedicated GeForce 940M. The very decent performance does go hand-in-hand with a higher noise level as well, so that's something to consider.
All things considered, the Aspire V3-372-57CW definitely earns a "buy" recommendation. At this time, there isn't really another notebook out there which offers more hardware for the money.
